This November: The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia
Time

http://www.starwars.com/vault/books/20080804news.html

The Star Wars universe is constantly expanding. In the ten years since the publication of the Star Wars Encyclopedia -- the definitive reference guide to a space fantasy phenomenon -- a lot has happened in that galaxy far, far away. Four new feature films, a host of official original novels, comics, video games, and more, have introduced new characters, new lore, new events, and new revelations. We've experienced everything from the Clone Wars and the inception of the Empire to the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the invasion of the monstrous Yuuzhan Vong. We've witnessed the founding of the New Jedi Order and learned the history of the ancient Sith rule of two. We've met Mace Windu, Darth Maul, Queen Amidala, and Jango Fett, to name but a few.

Keeping pace with the prodigious growth of the Star Wars saga means that the ultimate sourcebook of data -- culled from films, radio dramas, comics, novels, short stories, and video games -- had to grow also. And now, thirty years of information on all things Star Wars -- ranging from science and technology to history and geography, culture and biography to ecology and cosmology, with comprehensive entries from "abo" and "Abrax" to "Zirtran's Anchor" and "zwil" -- has been supplemented with another entire decade's worth of all-new material.

Abundantly illustrated with full-color artwork and photos, and now in a new three-volume edition to accommodate its millennia-spanning wealth of detailed entries, the Star Wars Encyclopedia encompasses the full measure of George Lucas's extraordinary creation. Here are the renowned and infamous ("Luke Skywalker," "Jorus C'baoth," "Darth Vader," "Grand Moff Tarkin"), the obscure and enigmatic ("Tnun Bdu," "Captain Tycho Celchu," "Bib Fortuna"); the natives and customs of planets as diverse as Tatooine and Hoth, Dagobah and Kashyyyk; the rituals, secrets, and traditions of Jedi Knights and Sith Lords; plus, for the intensive researcher, a timeline of major events in Star Wars history. Scrupulously researched and written by leading authorities Stephen J. Sansweet, Pablo Hidalgo, Bob Vitas, Daniel Wallace, Mary Franklin, Josh Kushins, and Chris Cassidy, this landmark work is the key to a monumental mythos -- and the must-have centerpiece for every Star Wars library.

And because several of the authors currently share Lucasfilm's campus with StarWarsShop, customers purchasing Star Wars Encyclopedia online through SWShop will receive an exclusive signed edition by all six authors! The signed Star Wars Encyclopedia will be available nowhere else, unless you are able to get your book signed in person. To pre-order your signed copy, visit StarWarsShop here.

The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia is set for release this November from Del Rey Books.

Does anyone else here agree with me that TPM is the best of the PT?
Time

I disliked TPM in many ways but then years later nostalgia set in, I watched it again with a less critical eye and actually enjoyed it.  I agree that it had a realness to it the other two movies don't have (which is funny to me as at the time, TPM struck me as having too much CGI...boy did Luca$ prove me wrong on that one!).

ROTS was not that bad to me and I enjoyed most of it from day one.  I can still watch it here and there and enjoy it.

Now AOTC is another story entirely, I H A T E that movie and always will, and I feel that it is the least SW-like out of all three PT films.   I can't sit through the entire movie and when I saw it in the theatre on opening day, I was so bored that I walked out about halfway through to stretch my legs and didn't rush to come back...that says an awful lot coming from an SW fan like me!

New 'The Clone Wars' movie trailer
Time
I just watched the latest trailer and completely busted out laughing. Now Yoda and the Republic are fighting for Jabba the Hutt's SON, and Obi Wan appears in front of Jabba much like Luke did in ROTJ?!? Yoda knowing and fighting alongside of Chewbacca was pretty bad, but this takes it to a new all time low...each time I swear Lucas can't ruin the story anymore than he already has, and each time I am proven wrong.

I won't spend a single dime on this movie. I remember a time when seeing something SW-related would get me excited and I would get that fun, butterfly feeling in my gut. Not anymore...

Why is the GOUT not anamorphic?
Time
I have many theories, with this being one:
Erikstormtrooper said:

2) Here's another possibility. Maybe the GOUT was made years ago, in the late 90s, when non-anamorphic was still common. For some reason, GL sat on this for years. (We all know George has a tendency to finish things and then sit on them, like the cgi yoda in TPM). This probably cost something back when it was done, so GL decides in 2006 to just use it as an "extra", and make some money off of what was otherwise a bad investment. Again, some tech probably mentions that ANAMORPHIC IS THE STANDARD. Word comes down from on high that the GOUT will be non-anamorphic. End of discussion.

IMO this was all done to bleed even more money out of the fans and the new "converts" who saw the OOT for the first time via the bonus disc. It was a win/win for George: he didn't really spend any money on the transfer, he got to unload tons of SE discs that didn't sell that well two years prior, you had to buy the movies individually... When a new SW OOT product pops out someday (which I believe it will), it will be anamorphic, and many people who bought the '06 discs will buy again.

George is a money maker, and he will squeeze every dime out of the series that he can.

How much longer will the format war last?
Time
Here it is:

Toshiba Highly Likely To Withdraw From HD DVD Business
By YUKARI IWATANI KANE and SARAH MCBRIDE
February 16, 2008 11:39 p.m.

TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. is highly likely to pull out of the HD DVD business early this week, people familiar with the situation said, marking the end of an intense battle over next-generation formats against Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray technology.

Since Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. decided last month to support Blu-ray exclusively, sales of Blu-ray players and movies have started to gain momentum, putting pressure on Toshiba to consider its options.

"Sales have been hurt since Warner's decision, and we are considering different options," said Keisuke Oomori, Toshiba's spokesman, though he said that nothing has been decided at this point.

If Toshiba withdraws from the HD DVD business, Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures and General Electric Co.'s Universal Pictures, both of which currently support the format exclusively, would be immediately released from their commitments, a person familiar said.

Over the past several years, supporters of HD DVD and Blu-ray have been engaged in a fierce war over the high-definition DVD market as each side launched major campaigns to woo movie studios, retailers and ultimately consumers to their side.

Toshiba was particularly aggressive with price cuts during the holiday season and had been buoyed by solid sales of its players by the end of last year. But its fortunes changed when Warner Bros. chose to back Blu-ray in early January, leaving HD DVD with just a 25% share of the high-definition video market. That meant consumers, who bought HD DVD players, would have far fewer movie titles to choose from.

The Blu-ray side has also benefited from a strong increase in sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 videogame console, which comes with a Blu-ray player.

Toshiba made a last ditch effort to save its HD DVD business by slashing its prices on the players in January by as much as 25% in the U.S., but Blu-ray players still outsold HD DVD players by more than two to one, according to analysts. Movie sales figures have been even more telling. Nearly 80% of high-definition software sales were for the Blu-ray format in January, analysts said.

Meanwhile, retailers, which had been relatively neutral, began successively expressing their support for Blu-ray, in the hopes of putting a quick end to the battle. Retailers are hoping that a decision would persuade consumers who have been cautious about buying high-definition players and movies while a format battle was continuing.

In recent weeks, the situation had become increasingly grim for Toshiba and HD DVD supporters. Major retailers like consumer electronics giant Best Buy Co. Inc., online video rental company NetFlix Inc. and Wal-Mart all sided with Blu-ray just in the past week alone.

Of course with me living here, I will be sure to check it out

http://www2.fi.edu/exhibits/traveling/starwars/

February 9 - May 4, 2008

Could cars that hover above ground be the mass transit of the future? Will we ever have droids like C-3PO in real life? Fantasy and reality join forces in Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination, coming February 9 - May 4, 2008 at The Franklin Institute. This is the first exhibition to showcase costumes and props from all six Star Wars films while exploring cutting-edge research and modern technologies that could one day make the fantasy world of Star Wars a reality.

Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination invites visitors into a unique, immersive exhibit environment where they will be absorbed in hands-on experiences to discover how robots and landspeeders exist in the world of Star Wars, and learn about the important roles that imagination and science play in the creation of increasingly sophisticated machines. In two large Engineering Design labs, visitors get to use the knowledge gained in the exhibit to create and test their own speeders and robots. May the Force be with you!

In ESB once Luke discovers who Yoda really is:

Yoda: You see, Luke, all about Chewbacca I know. Good friends we were, before you met him...very good friends indeed.

In ESB while Luke is training:

Yoda: The Force, magical it is not. Rather, it is these tiny organisms...

In ROTJ:

Luke: Is Darth Vader my father?

Yoda: Your father he once was. But once he became Darth Vader, he separated himself from himself he did. Okay, confusing it sounds so let me explain: if he were to die today and still be bad, he will appear as he does now. But if he were to die good again, he would appear as he did BEFORE Darth Vader he became.

2007 DVD repackage
Time
As has been said, it's more likely that it's simply a repackaging of the GOUT and the PT DVDs (apparently there are still some of the "limited editions" left). Really, I think that it was an official Lucasfilm product, they'd have made noise and made sure that no living thing was unaware of its existance.

That is one possibility, but then there's another: When Luca$ spreads word of his releases early, the hype builds up, people get more info and tear the release apart (rightfully so) and some of the negative press damages sales. Maybe this time around Luca$ will wait until the last minute to announce the set, the hype is fast and hard and sales skyrocket...just in time for the Christmas season.

Again, I am not holding my breath, but my theory re: the SW well running dry very quickly gives me some hope, as they need to come up with a new product to really get the buy-in anymore....

My comment in another thread:

I think Lucas is so screwed up these days that he is going to clean up the OUT and act like it was his idea to do that all along. Soon he will be saying crap like, "I never really wanted the SEs, but I was listening to so many people around me..." He will do a total 180 and pretend that the public were the ones that forced him to do all of this crap...

Luca$ is addicted to hype (and money). He has no more movies to get people excited about...he won't be able to be out of the SW spotlight for long, and my prediction is found in my comment above...even more so now that Spielberg is going the other direction w/ this new Close Encounters release...

He's milked SW for all it's worth and the only thing left now is a return to the ORIGINAL versions. Kind ironic when you think about it...

"And now the circle is complete..."

The retailer's page has since been updated with pictures of the discs to clarify this. So that settles that."

Why would Lucas miss the biggest marketing opportunity for Star Wars this decade by not releasing the mega set on the anniversary date? Why wait 4 months and then release the DVDs.....you don't need a degree in sales and marketing to know that was a major boo-boo....

I see what you are saying, but retail always fairs better when it goes after the Christmas season/shoppers. If SW was released on its Anniv. date, you are really only catering to the fans. But if you release it to the Christmas shoppers, you have a great opportunity not only for the fans but for the somebody's to pick it up who normally wouldn't because they are buying it for somebody else.

And yes, I fee that SW is totally saturated at this point but that is a whole other issue LOL

I still think that this will be a typical Lucas fast one where they say they won't but still do, and we WILL see the OOT again sometime very soon.

So...today I bought Attack of the clones just to have a complete collection

AOTC is not only my most hated SW movie, it is one of my all time least favorite movies EVER, and that says an awful lot for me. Some of you have touched on some of the reasons why I feel this way, and I am a bit too tired right now to list them all out right now....maybe at another time I will do so...

Lucas could have done so much more with this movie and he totally dropped the ball IMO; if you removed this movie from the series you would miss absolutely nothing in regards to the advancement of the story, and that is/was a major disappointment to me.

Oh I'm sure it won't; Luca$ has proven so many times that he will swallow his words, deny them, etc., for the mighty dollar.

I wouldn't call the situation hopeless at all. A few years ago we heard how many people say, "The OOT will never be on DVD" yet here it is. Yes it was a crappy transfer, etc., but the point is that it WAS released, which shows there is probably even more hope now than ever before. Times change and people change as they age, and you don't know what Luca$ has up his sleeve, who he has around him now and in the future and what they may be telling him (and what they may convince him to do), etc. No matter how you slice it the cash cow is quickly dying and Luca$ needs to come up with new sources of revenue now more than ever. There are no more movies to hype, no more people waiting for the next three years...the well is now to a mere trickle. Luca$ has recycled and updated the SEs so many times now and the PT following isn't anywhere near as close to what I'm positive he thought it would be, so what would the easiest way to make money from here on out be? The OOT! The original fans will always want it, and there is now new generations out there who want it because it is new to them...

Hang in there, I'm sure it is coming...

So, um... no new DVD's announced this year?
Time
I was at SW's official site and they had a video advertisement for LG's new player that can play both formats. Yes, LFL will probably allow pretty much anyone to advertise there for the right amount of $. But I still can't shake the feeling that something is up their sleeves...

Well regardless, the point in all of this is you shouldn't even have to worry about such things with iconic movies such as these, and pristine versions of ALL versions of the movies should already be out there. It's really sad (and sickening) to think there is a man/company in this world that is consistently biting the hand that feeds them.

Lucasfilm to 'Star Wars' Fans: No Blu-ray, HD DVD on the Horizon

Mon May 21, 2007 at 11:59 AM ET

Responding to persistent rumors of a pending release of the 'Star Wars' films on high-def disc, Lucasfilm has issued a statement denying any such plans for the series in the foreseeable future.

Ever since both next-gen formats launched last year, George Lucas' blockbuster space saga has been one of the most highly-requested "holy grails" on high-def.

But hopes hit a new high several weeks ago when early adopters started buzzing about this Amazon.com listing for the Star Wars Trilogy on Blu-ray. Such "placeholder" pages for highly anticipated titles are common practice with the web's biggest retailer, enabling customers to sign up for an email alert when the item in question becomes available. Unfortunately, this can lead to confusion for some consumers, who mistake these placeholders to mean the title has been officially announced.

Hoping to quell the web wildfire, the folks at PC World contacted Lucasfilm for comment early last week, and were told the following by company spokesperson John Singh:

"Lucasfilm Ltd. has no plans to release any of the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray or HD DVD. Listings on Amazon.com or any other Web site are purely speculative and erroneous."

It's worth noting that such a statement should not be much of a surprise (if still a disappointment) to long-time industry watchers. Lucas was one of the longest hold-outs on DVD despite that format's fast-growing mainstream acceptance, waiting over four years after launch before he allowed the first 'Star Wars' film to be released on disc (which turned out to be 'Episode I: The Phantom Menace' in September 2001).

Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on any future news of a 'Star Wars' release on high-def disc. Stay tuned...

EVERYTHING that comes out of LFL needs to be taken with a grain of salt...remember how many times we heard "Never" or "No plans to" and it ended up happening.
