So, um... no new DVD's announced this year?

Yeah looking back over the years, Lucas never let the Christmas season go to waste. He has a habit of releasing stuff in Sept. it seems, so we'll see in about 4 months I guess...

And like someone else said, if there isn't going to be a cleaned up OOT, then I'd rather there be no boxed-set at all and I won't be broken up if one doesn't come out this year (or ever).

But I still have this sneaking suspicion that it is all about the next format...

LOL

Here's my take on it all in another thread:

On a related note, I noticed that the prices on HD-DVD players have really dropped. With The Matrix trilogy now on the format, I'm sure LFL won't be too far behind. Since Fox is with Blu-ray (correct?) imagine how big of a push that format would get if the SW movies were released on it! Knowing Lucas, he's not going to let this opportunity slide...

Thanks, Mielr! Much like SW, I too am getting old.

Will the original 'Star Wars' ever be properly presented on DVD?

Lucas will keep this situation as the way things are until the day he dies. We might as well move on and just accept the worst DVD transfer in the history of humankind as the only way to see the true OT as fans have appreciated for 30 years, or just move on to star trek. We never expected this misery back in the 70s, 80s, and most of the 90s. And all of you put empty hopes in celebration IV and the 30th anniversary and next generation formats to get out of this hellhole. The OOT will get a proper presentation when the equator freezes over.

I'm a little more optimistic for the simple fact that we DID see the OUT on DVD. The poor transfer issues aside, it WAS on DVD when many said it will never, ever happen (including Lucas). Now will we ever see a proper version on DVD? Eh, that I doubt and I think it will be on the next format...even still, the point is we will see it again. Lucas has proven time and time again that money talks, and I feel that the OUT will be no exception...

for what it's worth.... a placeholder for the OT on blu-ray has been posted at amazon
Time
Since it is fitting to the topic, I saw an HD-DVD ad on StarWars.com the other day. Not that it is odd to see ads on there, but A) the ad was actually in an article (not on the homepage) so it was allowed to be placed there and B) I was thinking that LFL would only allow certain advertisers, ones they agree with and support to take up such "prime real estate"...

...but then it is LFL after all so I am probably off, and we all know it is always the $ before the product.

Anyone else nostalgic to the PT?

LOL

I am old enough to have seen both ESB and ROTJ in the theatres and all 3 movies have played such a large role in my life, so the PT had *a lot* to live up to. When it was confirmed that Lucas was really doing them, I didn't want the movies to come out from the get-go because I just KNEW they weren't going to be able to live up to the originals for me. Also, if they weren't done correctly, the OT could be tainted for both the current fans and the fans to come...

When the SE came out in '97 and I saw some of the changes, "Uh-oh!" is all I could say! I had a sinking feeling in my gut that the PT was going to suck big time...

EPI came out and I was pretty bored with it from start to finish. Also, there were MANY things I didn't like about this new story line: Anakin built C3PO?!? A virgin birth?!? Tatooine is being used AGAIN?!? Midichlorians?!? But I was able to brush those things off in hopes that the future episodes would be better...

EPII was just BORING to me and I can remember almost falling asleep during it (and I have never, ever fallen asleep in a theatre no matter how bad the film was!). This is my least favorite in the series for far too many reasons to list here.

EPIII I actually enjoyed quite a bit and feel that it is the best of the series. It does have its faults, though, Lord does it have its faults...

As surprising as it all is to me, I am finding these days that as more time passes, I actually am getting nostalgic for the PT!!! But like others have said, it is more for the experiences and what was going on in my life at the time versus the actual movies. I must also say now that EPI has actually gone up a few notches in my book, though, and I never thought I would ever say that LOL But EPII will always, always be my most hated and the most pointless in the series IMO...Lucas REALLY missed the boat with that movie!

Six-Movie Star Wars Marathon at Celebration IV

"Archiving seminar reveals 'Star Wars' tidbit?" Another SE?!
Time
Well I will still try to remain optimistic here and say that we will see a remastered version of the OUT this year; too many signs point to it as far as I am concerned.

Also, maybe some of the changes to the SE versions will actually be better, as lots of time has passed between '97 and now and who knows, maybe George listened to *some* reason over the years...

Lost Prequel Ideas
Time
Ooo, fun thread! I would pretty much scrap all 3 movies and take it from the top, and I would DEFINITELY eliminate all the connections between Yoda and Chewbacca, C3PO and Anakin, some of the planets, etc.:

TPM:
-Starting Anakin out as a young adult and briefly touching on his childhood, but getting totally rid of the whole virgin birth stuff; retains the mystery of his character.
-Totally scrapping the whole Midichlorians (sp?) thing.
-Touch on the politics and the behind the scenes corruption of the Republic.

AOTC:
-Showing a MUCH BETTER version of Anakin's transformation, and a MUCH BETTER love story between him and Padme. Maybe throw Obi-Wan in there too to cover the jealousy aspect; could've been an interesting sub-plot.
-A MUCH BETTER clone war, complete with the Mandalorian Warriors (and FYI, the lack of this was one of the most disappointing things about AOTC to me).
-Maybe show Chewbacca/the Wookies back story; would've been easy to tie in w/ the Mandalorians.
-Padme getting pregnant and hiding it from Anakin because she can already see the change in him.

ROTS:
-Anakin becoming Darth Vader much sooner in the movie and fighting and destroying Jedis like Mace Windu.
-Shown more of the Emperor and the rise of the Empire.
-LEFT IN THE REBELLION SCENES and expanded on them!
-Luke and Leia being born, but Vader not really knowing about them. You would tell through the 2nd and 3rd movies he suspects it, but A) never really sure b) doesn't know there are twins and C) may even think the child is Obi-Wan's; goes back to my whole sub-plot thing.

Also, I would've named each movie something different probably, but I am using the original titles for the ease of reference.

OOT has 1 day left

2 weeks into the new year and we still have no word on the next home video release.

That idea someone on these boards had of buying a copy (of each, like we weren't going to collect all three...) and leaving it sealed in the plastic is starting to sound like a good one. If and when they announce the specs for the '07 release, I'll know whether or not we're getting a remastered OOT this year. If we are, the cases stay sealed and hopefully become collector's items years down the road. If we're not, the plastic comes off.

That was my idea, and I'm glad somebody liked it.

RE: the specs, it's too early in the year and I am sure we won't hear a thing until at least March. Why? For many reasons, with the main one being Luca$ doesn't want to overly upset the people who rushed out and paid full price for the 09/12 copies. I believe that we will get some rubbish from LFL "out of the blue" one day, something like: "George wasn't going to spend the time and money on remastering the OUT, but with the great success of the 09/12 release and the fact that this is the 30th anniversary, we wanted to give the fans something really special..."

Will you buy the OOT again ?
Time
I still think we will see one of three things this year:

1. The OUT completely restored in a boxed set with all 6 films and extras, etc. (less likely IMO).
2. The OUT completely restored in a boxed set all by itself with the SEs, extras, etc.(more likely IMO).
3. The same OUT as the 09/12 release (.01% chance IMO).

I am saying #2 is the most likely scenario because A) Lucas will make way more $ breaking things down into two separate sets and B) he will appeal to both the PT, OUT, SE AND PT/SE/OUT markets. He has slammed the fans for decades now and he is smart enough to realize that the well has run pretty dry; to get people to buy all of these movies again, he will need to come up with something quite spectacular.

They are not going to announce it until probably february at least, so as not to dissuade the christmas/boxingday/new-years sales. Otherwise all those PT/OT/OOT disks I see on the shelves will continue to sit there instead of being bought twice.

Exactly.

"Black Friday" SW DVD Sales...Wow, Did Some of You...

I dunno, this may be just me, but i get the feeling this is a two fingered salute to all the fans of the OOT. Two months after the official release that we moved mountains to get on DVD we get a semi sub-par release that now feels as if its thrown into the bargin bin at the local store. Lucas may state that supply exeeded demand for the OOT and wasn't deemed enough of success in the retail market, hence they are trying to cutback on their losses on this release with a price reduction. Not that i hate Lucus, i just hate commercialism.

Yeah, that is def. one way to look at it. I'm still sticking with my theory, though, and Lucas is getting his last digs where he can before the ultimate product drops next year. Think about it for a second:

--Lucas supposedly hates the OUT and makes all sorts of outrageous claims about it not being seen again.
--For whatever reason, it is coming out. Lucas figures he'll take one last shot at the OUT fans and make more $; a total win-win for him.
--He releases the OUT on 09/12 but makes the fans A) buy them seperately B) buy them with the SE C) buy them in a non-anamorphic version.
--Closer to Christmas and the end of the year, the fans are slapped in the face yet again because the prices have been cut in HALF!
--In '07 we see a cleaned up OUT, "forcing" the OUT fans to buy AGAIN.

I think Lucas knows he has lost the war but he figures he'll take one more battle...

"Black Friday" SW DVD Sales...Wow, Did Some of You...
Time
I HATE Christmas and try to hide during this time of year but I do have family and friends who insist on buying me gifts (I would rather see them keep their money and do something nice for themselves instead but hey, what can ya do). I did not purchase these discs but since some people in my life just have to get me something, I was thinking about asking for these (but they must swear to me that they do not pay more than $9.99 for them) and leaving them sealed until next year. If '07 brings what I think it will (e.g. the OUT remastered) then I sell them or keep them sealed for future collecting reasons. If it does not than I open the discs and at least have something to watch, as my VHS copies won't be around forever...

...hmm...decisions, decisions...
