Ah, do you mean, "When Hulkamania runs wild on YOU!" LOL Maybe we could still use that but tweak it a little:

Or how about:

"Whatcha gonna do, Geroge, when the 'SE send back the disc posse' runs wild on YOU!"

I understand your point but I must respectfully disagree. There is no way that in 2006 we should have to specify exactly what a DVD should contain to a company that was (is?) the forefront of movie technology.

is that confirmed? because I like to use the 2004 editions to take screencaps of my favorite un-destroyed scenes, and having the full screen 2004 versions will allow for higher-res stills. that would make the 2004 discs worth buying again (but only if the OOT discs weres still widescreen)

Apparently it has been confirmed, yes:

Where Does it Actually Say that the DVDs are *NOT* Anamorphic?!?
Time
I ran a search on here but didn't find what I was looking for, as I am sure it is out there somewhere. But I was wondering: other than hearsay, where did we actually get confirmation that the 09/12 releases are not anamorphic? Amazon.com says as such for Star Wars:

It says "Widescreen" for both discs 1 AND 2 and nothing about anamorphic, even for disc 1. I am guessing that "Enhanced Trilogy Version" on Disc 1 simply means "SW with all of the changes" and this is NOT referring to it being anamorphic. Also, I read recently that Fox has a problem with labeling their DVDs properly before the release and proper marketing, so could this be just a case of that?!?

Just looking for some clarification and hard evidence. Thanks!

The top one looks better to me, as the colors are better, the picture is sharper and it is not as blurry (althought the darkened colors wash out the tie fighters quite a bit). I am guessing the top one is the '04 version?

I have been noticing A LOT of changes in the '04 versions when compared with the '77 versions and that makes me feel a little better about things. What I am getting at: during the restoration process (or immediately after) a lot of the shots were changed digitally, hence there really is some truth to what is said and there really is no actual digital transfer of the OOT. But I HIGHLY doubt that there aren't cleaned up prints somewhere, and I don't believe a word of what Lucas says about that.

And I must admit that a lot of the really technical discussions are going WAY over my head. But one question: how hard is it to make a DVD anamorphic? Is it something fairly easy to do, or does it take a lot of time?

So that might be a place to look to compare the old and new...generally speaking, the colors just look washed out on the 1977. I saw a few places were the detail wasn't as fine.

Yeah, I created a post on that in the other forum:

Sometimes I wonder if they aren't doing the whole anamorphic thing for nostalgia purposes, and they want it to look as bare bones and '77 '80 '83 as possible....

...eh, probably not...

A good place for comparing…IMO it was SO MUCH BETTER left untouched, and this showed me just how crazy Lucas is…some of the things he took the time to fix were completely pointless:

I just can't get this out of my head: there has got to be some logical reason why these aren't going to be anamorphic (other than "Lucas trying to screw the fans over"). No matter how bad you wanted to prove a point, I doubt you would risk your company's reputation...right?!?!?!?!? Maybe it's a more tedious prcess than we think. But then why not make an announcement that it is coming out, build the hype, take the time and then release it when ready?!?

I was thinking this is all for the Christmas rush, but 9/12 is a little too early. Then I was thinking this is a way to get rid of the SE leftovers because last year's second release of them barely made a blip on the radar, but...I dunno, that seems like a stretch too. So what can the reason be?!?

Wouldn't it be funny if they came out and they were anamorphic after all LOL

LOL

And this is exactly what bothers me: how long it takes LFL to release stuff. I really do fear that after 09/12, it will be YEARS before we see the OOT again (if ever). Look how long it took them to put EP I on DVD! The SEs....

For crying out loud.....when is this bullshit going to end?

I seriously doubt that the OOT will be in this set. I think we're getting the 9/12 release for two reasons....one is curb the bootlegs and the other reason is so he doesn't have to release them ever again. I think that's why it's a limited release only. Lucas is doing it to get them out there, so he can say they're out there and we should leave him alone.

I wasn't going to buy the 9/12 release, but I'm going to now cuz I don't think we're ever going to see the OOT again. This is it and we mind as well not miss it.

Yeah, sadly, I am thinking that too.

George Lucas = Darth Vader. "He is more machine now than man, twisted and evil...".

So I picked up my g/f's Cosmopolitan mag and skimmed through it (hey, what's not to like?!? ridiculous articles, pics of hot women... ). And there in the "Hot Fall Releases" section is this:

Staying in With Your Guy:

Star Wars: The Original Trilogy - 9/12

He'll love quoting Darth Vader's "I am your faaah-ther" for the umpteenth time. You'll love that Harrison Ford as Han Solo looks even better in the remastered version.

So should we write them too and let them know it won't be anamorphic. LOL LOL

How George Lucas created the O-OT fanbase...
Time
/\
Yep, and exactly what I said in the T-Bone thread:

I'd love to be optimistic here, but I too am REALLY starting to doubt if the OOT will be inlcuded in the '07 uber-box set.

I think LFL is banking on the DVD's demise and they will focus any and all OOT efforts into the next media format...

I can *sort of* (key phrase there) see the logic in them waiting to release a high quality version of the OOT on the next media format and focusing all of their efforts there. But A) how many people will buy into the new technology right away? DVD is superior to VHS but look at how long it took the market to completely convert and B) some people may never, ever buy into the technology and feel that DVD is good enough (and for many people, it will be). Don't those fans deserve something too?

What a mess and we shouldn't even need to have this discussion!

Tell imdb.com to separate their rating system for theatrical and altered versions of movies.

Also he's getting away without paying Marcia Lucas by calling the shoddy transfer of the OOT a bonus disc and getting away with that as the main attraction.

I remember there was a poll on imdb.com shortly after the release of the '04 special editions that asked which version of SW you prefer? The OOT won in a landslide! So lets all demand that imdb.com changes their rating system so all movies will have separate rating systems for their original theatrical version and altered versions to prove to GL once and for all what version we really prefer!

You can contact them here.

Here is an example for a comment you can text to them:

Please separate your rating system for theatrical and altered versions of movies.

Hello IMDB.com representatives. Many people agree that most special editions for movies suck, but particularly George Lucas’s ’97 and ’04 editions of his original Star Wars Trilogy. We all know his current demand on making those the official versions and destroying the recognition of The Original Theatrical Editions indefinitely. As you know, GL is finally releasing the original theatrical movies, but only to bait the fans into trying to prove people prefer the special editions.

The logical way to do this would be to release The Originals and the special editions on DVD at the same time, but George Lucas is doing this totally unfairly. He is re-releasing the ‘04 special editions (which most fans already have) coupled with The Original Theatricals so we are being forced to buy the pathetic ’04 editions again with the inferior transfers of The Original Theatrical movies. This release will of course, not generate big sales and it is just a gimmick to give George Lucas the excuse to say people prefer the special editions and he will also now have the right to prosecute bootleggers of the Theatrical Original Trilogy.

I would like your website to divide the rating system for special edition movies and their original theatrical versions not only for the Star Wars trilogy but for all other movies as well. This will help new viewers realize other versions of a movie which may help promote sales and it would also be nice to see what the general public thinks of George Lucas’s special editions to prove to him what versions we really prefer.

If you want to be taken seriously, you should remove words like "suck" from your message...

Oh I LOVE that game! My friend's mother works for Hershey and they have an employee day at Hershey Park every year a week or so before the park opens to the public. During this day EVERYTHING is free, including all the video games. I swear, I spent hours playing that game LOL

LOL Look at How They Try to Explain Away Continuity Problems!
Time
....and even admit that there are some issues LOL! Man, I am finding all kinds of goodies on the Star Wars site:

Q: A friend and I have had a long-standing argument over when the opening crawl of the first Star Wars movie was changed to add "Episode IV: A New Hope." He says it was 1978, but I think it was a couple of years later.

A: You win. But the mind does play tricks, and this wasn't as easy to answer as you might think. Soon after the unexpected huge success of Star Wars, George Lucas announced that it was only one part in a multi-chapter saga, and almost immediately started production on the next part, The Empire Strikes Back. But there was also a pre-story that might get made someday, he said. The first movie really started "in the middle" of the story.

Star Wars was still playing in numerous theaters a year after its opening on May 25, 1977. It was re-released in 1979, 1981 and 1982. But when was the change made? For the indisputable answer, we went to Lucasfilm's film archivist, Sterling Hedgpeth. Here's what he says:

"I found a box with all the positive elements for the 'revised' opening crawl, and the assorted trim boxes are dated from October through December 1980. This, then, is consistent with the view that Episode IV: A New Hope was added for the first time to the opening crawl for the April 10, 1981 re-release."

Q: Why was the stormtrooper line "Close the blast doors!" added to the Special Edition release of A New Hope?

A: It wasn't so much added as it was put back in. That line was part of A New Hope since the very beginning, but an entire generation who grew up with the original Star Wars on video never heard it.

There are at least five different mixes for the Star Wars audio track, with three of them dating back to the film's original theatrical release. In some markets, you could literally hear a different version of the film if you knew what theater to go to.

During A New Hope's theatrical run, there was a 70mm 6-track mix, a 35mm Dolby stereo mix, and a 35mm monaural mix. The 70mm version was the first audio track out the door, rushed to completion for delivery to so-called "showcase" theaters. The 35mm Dolby mix had a longer lead-time as Star Wars spread out from its initial 32-screen debut to its eventual spread to 1,098 screens 13 weeks later. Some of those theaters, though, lacked Dolby sound altogether, hence the need for mono mixes.

With each different mix, there are differences in the emphasis or placement of sound effects. Some are really minor -- the laser sounds of the Death Star prison breakout are a lot zingier in some versions, or Dice Ibegon -- the snake-headed lamproid in the cantina -- chirps instead of snarls. Some are a bit more pronounced, such as Luke asking, "Blast it, Wedge, where are you?" instead of asking for Biggs, Princess Leia's blaster sounding like Dirty Harry's .45, or Aunt Beru having a different voice altogether. The "blast door" line is another example.

When it came time to release Star Wars on VHS, one particular audio mix was chosen, and it became the de facto version for many, many fans. A subsequent laserdisc release created a fourth audio mix, taking elements from the previous three. Of course, the Special Edition prompted a fifth mix, and the DVD release, a sixth.

Q: In The Empire Strikes Back, why does Vader stop Boba Fett from shooting Chewbacca in the carbon-freezing chamber? Was it the fact that C-3PO, Vader's droid, was attached to Chewie's back?

A: Although a stirring short story that appeared in Star Wars Tales #6 suggests that Vader did indeed recognize C-3PO on Cloud City, there really was no connection between the Dark Lord and the golden droid back when Empire was made. Vader's restriction of Fett was primarily meant to show just who was in charge and that no one fires a shot without Vader's say-so. Granted, it's hard to read expressions through immovable plasteel armor, but it looks more as if Vader is reminding Fett about his "no disintegrations" order than as if he's having gooey memories about a protocol droid he once built.

Gee, but I thought Lucas had these stories all planned out from the beginning?!?

Q: In The Empire Strikes Back, when Darth Vader is informed that the Rebels are on Hoth, he says, "and I'm sure Skywalker is with them." How did he know Luke's name?

A: Vader had some opportunity to do some fact checking in the three years between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. According to the Marvel Comics series, he found out Skywalker's identity from a captive Rebel pilot undergoing interrogation. This scene is also retold in the Vader's Quest comics series from Dark Horse.

What Vader didn't know... or perhaps feigned ignorance about before his dark Master... was the connection between Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker.

Oh yeah, because Vader and Anakin were different people, and he didn't even know who his son was until one day on Cloud City, the two figures mysteriously joined their brains together and for an oh so brief second, Vader and Anakin were one again. "Son, is that you?!?" LOL GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

Q: In The Empire Strikes Back, when Luke is leaving Dagobah, Obi-Wan says to Yoda "That boy is our only hope." Yoda then states, "No there is another." Does this mean that Obi-Wan does not know about Leia? Will he not see her in Episode III?

A: As you'll find out in Episode III, Obi-Wan Kenobi is fully aware of Leia's existence. His gloomy statement has more to do with the faith he had put in Luke. Knowing Leia's strengths in the political arenas, he had profound doubts about her abilities to become a Jedi capable of ending the Sith rule.

Riiigghhttt....

Q: When Han Solo is being put into carbon-freeze (The Empire Strikes Back), his hands are cuffed. When he comes out of the chamber his hands are up in the air and spread apart. Also, when he is thawed in Jedi, the bindings are gone. How does this happen?

A: The Ugnaughts remove the bindings on Han's hands before he is lowered into the chamber. If you watch carefully you should be able to catch it. The bindings that are on his upper arms are made of carbonite, and thus melt away when Leia releases Han from his carbonite coffin.

This stuff is priceless! http://www.starwars.com/ [middle of page under "Are Y-wings in Episode V?"]

Hyperspace: Yep, I Think that Something is DEFINITELY up for '07!
Time

I rarely go to Star Wars’ official site but I figured I would pop over there to see if there is anything new about the 09/12 release. There on the homepage you see the following:

Hyperspace Reveals the Secrets of Star Wars 07
May 10, 2006

Fans are already primed to make next year a Star Wars year to remember. 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of the beloved saga, and already there are whispers of possible events that will commemorate that milestone. But what hasn’t yet been talked about is the biggest entertainment event of the year: a major addition to the Star Wars mythos.

It begins now. As with the earliest glimpses of Episode III, Hyperspace will be the first place to get a look at the secrets 2007 holds. A new image series, rich with explosive and intriguing concept art, is your first look at next year’s biggest Star Wars surprise. Hyperspace members, click here to see it.

You can see it only in Hyperspace, and this is just the start. If you’re not yet a member of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club, then sign up today!

And then on this page the 6th bullet point:

Exclusive new videos, including glimpses into forthcoming Star Wars DVD releases and other rarities unearthed from the Lucasfilm archives.

Even though it says the above was written in March 10, 2006 ('07 info on May 10), I think it is highly, HIGHLY suspect that they kept the March update around and linked it with the more recent '07 one. Sure it can be argued that the sentence above is talking about the 09/12 release, but LFL had more than enough time to update since that announcement. Since they have not, I say they didn’t because there are even more releases and “rarities” on the way.
