My memories surrounding the movies and the dozens of times I've seen them in theaters.........and my genuine love of the movie Star Wars as one of the best films ever made .... all these sustain my love for Star Wars and will keep it fun for me till the end of my days.
.

Very well put, man. I feel the same way.

The movie Star Wars, the adventure, the emotion, the sense of awe, the story, the event - they all happened first - because 1977 happened first - NOTHING that Lucas has done the last two decades, or anything he ever does from now on - technology, editing, lying, etc - can interfere with that. Where Star Wars is concerned, I've not seen anything (versions, edits) that didn't take place in 1977.

Events that happen now cannot alter events that happened in 1977.

Lucas doesn't get to decide what Star Wars is for me.

You guys are very lucky you can be like that! But for me, everytime I watch the OUT now and no matter how hard I try, I get flashes in my mind of the silly changes, the alterations in the story, Jar Jar, Anakin building C3PO, Chewbacca and Yoda being friends....

Selectable crawl on new DVD? Or just the old one?

I still don't believe you, Harlock415, and I need more proof...

...JUST KIDDING! Thanks for the pics!

Well I must admit that I am VERY pleased with the quality (compared to what I thought it was going to look like) and will more than likely be buying them now. Of course I wish they were anamorphic, but I am guessing there is a method to the madness here (God, I sure hope there is!) and Lucas/LFL/whoever is not putting a lot of effort and $ into these DVDs because they are focusing on the next medium instead and will really be wowing us with an OOT HD-DVD/Blu-ray or something. You may laugh but hey, we also heard the OOT would never be on DVD, so...

Oh and I still HIGHLY doubt an anamorphic OOT (or any OOT for that matter) will be in the '07 box set if there will be such a thing.

I was going to bring that up but I was giving the benefit of the doubt. But yeah, I am really wondering how legitimate this is and if any place would get these in early, especially THAT early....and at a rental store no less....

But it looks like better sharpness, contrast and color on the official discs (as you would expect). It would be great if you could find time to make some more screencaps, especially if they matched those on The NEW "official" Screenshots thread.

Yeah it would be cool to have a few screenshots in that thread so we can compare them side by side!

I am actually getting somewhat excited about the 09/12 release again! LOL

I got these discs yesterday and they look pretty bad. Not that much better than the LDs themselves, and in some cases worse because of the ditizization. As a friend of mine commented, "I'm glad I still have my VHS."

How exactly did you get these discs yesterday when they aren't out for another 2 weeks? Can you post some screen shots?

I just want to OOT in any condition at this point and I will be happy. After that, I'm jumping ship totally on SW. It used to be fun and it isn't anymore.

Pretty much where I am at now too with each passing day. Wow, 'tis very sad when you think about it and I would've never guessed years ago that some of my favorite childhood movies (and all time favorite movies in general) would end up being treated like this...

Sending the SEs back
Time
And to REALLY make an impact, get some media outlet involved too.

I've thought about it and I am roughly 60/40 in favor of not being bothered with this anymore either. But who knows, I may get a wild hair and end up doing it after all. One thing is for sure: I don't want them in my sight either, and if I don't send them back, I will either be selling them, giving them to family (my younger sister hates the SEs but would still take a free copy), or donating them to a charity like a local library, children's shelter, etc.

Star Wars: 30th Anniversary (2007 - New Box-set)

My response in another thread:

And I am wondering this too: even if Georgie Boy does inlcude an anamorphic version of the OOT in the supposed '07 set, will that STILL be enough to get people to buy it? How many people are going to say, "Eh, the one I have from 09/12 is good enough and I definitely have no need for the other crap." On the eve of a new format becoming the leader and studios taking off with it, I doubt people will even bother.

I'm starting to think the '07 set won't be that spectacular after all, rather, it will be geared towards the people who are new to SW or don't have a complete collection yet. I loved the Matrix trilogy but I already had all 3 movies so I skipped the deluxe set when it came out; I know many that did the same and I am sure SW will be no different.

Thanks a lot for the info, THX! Fanamorphic...I like it!

The names of Zoom settings vary from set to set, but it's pretty esy to flip through them to find the best one - there will be one that upscales the letterboxed image to fill the right amount of your screen.

Yeah, I played with it when I first got it and you are right, it was easy to do. I am guessing from what I have read in some of the other discussions that this will reduce picture quality somewhat, though.

Hopefully, nobody, but probably many people.

I don't know, I think even the die hard SW fans who must own everything are getting a little burned out and I don't think it will sell as well as Lucas thinks. With the 09/12 release, I HIGHLY doubt someone could justify owning the same movie 3 times (SE) and 2 times (PT) no matter how much they like SW.

Lucas is screwing himself big time with this Sept. release IMO, and he would've been better off giving the OOT proper treatment and waiting until next year and doing the '07 boxed set. He could've started the marketing now and created A LOT of hype. But alas, his poor business decisions have gotten the best of him yet again...

The downside to this method is a bit of distortion and the loss of some picture at the top and bottom (not a problem in this case because it's black). I've never come across a DVD player that turns a 4:3 source into a 16:9 picture. TVs tend to use either the zoom mode you set, or proper widescreen if it receives the switching signal.

DE

Thanks for the response, DE! I have a Samsung DLP and these are the following settings:

Wide (this is what I have it set on)
Panorama
Zoom1
Zoom 2
4:3

I have a Sony DVD/VCR player combo and it has two options you can select: 4:3 and 16:9; I have it set on 16:9.

I am guessing one of the two (or maybe a combination of both?) of these devices would keep the screen as full as could be w/ a non-anamorphic DVD; like you said, creating some distortion at the top/bottom won't matter in this case b/c that is the black bars. I know I will lose resolution w/ a non-anamorphic DVD as we all will, but maybe it won't be as noticeable with my set up....well I hope at least LOL

And again, will somebody be able to use the 09/12 OOT releases and make an anamorphic version with little fuss?!? God, I sure hope so...

I don't get something. Those images look wide-screen. But I thought the upcoming editions WEREN'T in wide-screen? I'm ... confused.

I don't have a diagram handy, so I'm going to steal Neil's signature image.

If you look at the larger image in the black box (the one that extends all the way to the left and right) that is how an "anamorphic widescreen" DVD image would fill the screen space of a widescreen TV.

The smaller image in the center of the box is how a "NON-anamorphic widescreen" DVD image would fill the screen space of a widescreen TV.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v293/Indysolo/dvd_anamorphic_top.jpg

On a standard "square" TV, the two will look pretty much the same.

So let me get this straight: I am going to have black bars on the top/bottom AND on the sides unless I zoom (which in turn degrades picture quality)? I don't think I own any NON-ananmorphic DVDs or watched them so don't quote me on this, but I am pretty sure that my player automatically converts the picture to fit the screen (it's a progressive scan and only 1 yr. old). And when I say "fit the sceen" I mean just so that you don't get any black bars on the sides; the top/bottom are still there.

Sorry for the somewhat silly questions and I have researched the subject a little, but I just bought a WS TV within the year and am pretty new to this all; it is just now that I am gaining interest and learning.

So will somebody be able to use the 09/12 OOT releases and make an anamorphic version with little fuss?!? God, I sure hope so...

Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars...

That was exactly what I was thinking when Lucas said he wanted to "update" the OT. I figured we'd get three movies that were still the same, but with updated SFX shots that fit right into the movie in terms of time and in terms of keeping with the sound and music tracks. That way we'd get three almost brand new movies, but they would still be the same. I figured Lucas would digitally restore the OT, then do this awesome magic and then then do the prequels from there. That way, all the movies would have basically fit together in SFX looks.

Lucas dropped the ball big time on an opportunity to re-insert himself into the movie world with those special editions. Instead, he hacked the movies up, made them look like shit and alienated a lot of fans in the process. Well....the man's crazy, so what do you expect.

AMEN! When you claim to fix things but actually add things no one wants and replace the things people have grown to love, and then on top of that, you can't even color the lightsabers right or clean up garbage mattes, you have a serious mental problem LOL

So will this release be of any use, and will it at least be easier for fans to make better OOT DVD versions? Will there be anamorphic version bootlegs now, etc.?

I don't condone doing anything illegal, but man, Lucas has REALLY upset me with what he is doing here and I wouldn't mind seeing anamorphic bootlegs made from the 09/12 release. If there is an easy way to do it myself please let me know, as I wouldn't mind buying the 09/12 release and converting them to anamorphic for myself, then selling the blasted originals...

We are about 2 weeks and some change away, and I was curious as to what people's plans are as of now.

Yes, own the OOT...for the last time...Or, until the 30th Anniversary set comes out or the next inevitable release that incorporates "rare deleted scenes from the Lucasfilm vaults". Yeah, I know numerous people have stated it already, but it's a quick cash grab.

If they come out with a boxed set next year of all 6 movies, you can be sure that it will *NOT* include the OUT, but rather the SE's. They will probably have bonus features discs, but they aren't going to include additional extra discs that they don't have to. IMO, this is really the last opportunity to buy the OUT on DVD. If they ever do it again, it'll probably be HD-DVD or such.

And, even if I'm wrong, and they do include the OUT in 2007, it'll still be the same discs you'd be getting Sept 12. So what's the advantage to waiting? I already own the PT, so that isn't an incentive for me.

Yeah, I really don't think they are going to put a lot of time into another OOT release and/or include it in the '07 boxed set. What could they really do to it, make it anamorphic and 5.1 sound? If they were going to do that they would've done it now IMO.

As far as the argument, "Well they have said 'For a limited time' in the past and always went back on their word!" this is very true. But typically this happens 10+ years down the road, and I really don't feel like waiting that long.

But again, who knows with this crazy company and the 09/12 release could be a way to test the waters to see if they really should put some time into a proper OOT release. It's a damn shame fans have to play such guessing games with the things they love, but more importantly, the very thing that made the company rich! Talk about a screw job and not respecting your meal ticket!

EDIT: And I am not quite sure who exactly is going to buy the '07 boxed set, as many people have these movies a few times over already. Even die hard fans who must own everything aren't that economically challenged! This thing will have to be pretty special to get people to buy into it...
