Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

FYI, the complete Project Threepio has pre-made SUP files for muxing onto DVD and Blu-ray.  No scripting required.  Harmy's folder only includes the SRT files for Star Wars, because that works better with how he imagined the MKV would get used.

Also, there may be a major update to Project Threepio in a few hours if I can get my act together...

International Audio (including Voice-Over Translations)

I've recently learned the following about the Japanese dubs:

Star Wars and Empire were both shown theatrically dubbed; Jedi was shown theatrically exclusively with subtitles.  Later, entirely new dubs were made for all three films, using famous Japanese voice actors, and these dubs were used for home video releases.  These video dubs have become the most familiar/popular versions of the Japanese dubs.  The Japanese GOUT discs featured both dubs.

As for the dubs themselves, the only unusual bit I've found is that Greedo is dubbed over in Japanese (Jabba is not).  In the video dub, a little electronic distortion is added to his voice, probably to make it sound more alien.

Nice to hear that, there were some visible crushed blacks in the first release. Can you please tell me one example of completely crushed blacks that Harmy was unable to fix it?

I believe Snicker posted a Blu-ray shot of the DS landing bay, where you couldn't see as far down the hole the stormtroopers fell down because the shadows got completely black higher up than on other transfers.  But the thing is, while technically crushed, it didn't look unnatural--at some point the hole was going to get pitch black, the point just moved a bit.  I'd agree with Harmy, there may be some crushing here or there, but not enough to make it especially worse than any other transfer of another film IMO.

AFAIK, blacks that were truly crushed out of existence (the data is gone) could not be recovered except via Snicker's method which were not used here.  However, there are a LOT of cases where blacks were crushed to the point of imperceptibility (there was data to work with, just not visible), and Harmy was able to recover those.

EDIT:  I should mention that the torrent I downloaded from 1337x.org contained a badly damaged MKV, and though I had it recheck my download against the torrent, I was still left with a damaged MKV.  Fortunately, I was able to download it from another (non-torrent) site.

Crap, that's where I'm downloading from.  Anyone get a successful download from there?

That's part of why I'd like Harmy to do ESB next instead of ROTJ.  With Puggo and -1 projects still outstanding, there's always a chance we'll get some good new source material for Jedi at a later date.  At the very least, we'll get frame-accurate subtitles if nothing else.  But improved Lapti Nek footage would be awesome as well.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)

Any estimates on the availability of the alternate encodings (448/lossless)?  Speaking for myself, I'm fine with DTS-MA or a bunch of FLAC/WAV files for lossless, but I could see why others would prefer FLAC/WAV.

I'm only partway through the new version and have to say I can't hear too much difference compared against V1.  Either it's my ears or a testament to how right you got it the first time.

Thanks for all of your hard work on this!  I am very excited to hear this, and although I'm probably NOT one of those with a nice enough system to hear the benefit of lossless, I'm also still excited about the lossless release, because... well, why not... I might have a nice system someday before I go deaf...

I know you get a lot of this, but your work is always stunning.  I may not frequently write about how impressed I am, but it's all been said before.  You are truly an artist.

EDIT: Also, I have tried my hand at audio editing somewhat recently, which just makes me all the more impressed with your work...
