Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

DarkJedi--I've been trying to PM you but may have run into technical difficulties.

When/if they exist, I'm looking for 720p screencaps from the Blu versions of both SW and ROTJ showing the burnt-in subtitles you're using.  I'm trying to do a good font/placement match (and I really need actual screencaps).  I'd prefer to get them in advance of the actual release--I'm trying to get my project out there in advance of yours and Harmy's next releases, as I'm trying to get it to integrate well with both.  PM me for details, thanks.

I guess this is the wrong hangar matte?

On the subject of mattes, wasn't the problem with negative1's 35mm film scans that they made great stills but due to subtle warpage would not make a good moving picture?

Soo... doesn't that mean we'd be able to use film scans from negative1's project to recreate missing mattes, since they're essentially stills?  Or maybe I'm missing something obvious.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)

Even if h_h makes a special PAL-timed version, I'm not sure a video-side fix wouldn't be warranted.  There are a lot of other soundtracks that would still be out of sync even if the primary one is fixed.

The NTSC is missing two frames compared to the PAL at the scene change from Dagobah to the rebel fleet, so on both projects there is a noticeable loss of synch at the point: from then on the audio is two frames in advance of the video, which is more objectionable than if it were a delay.  I would have pointed this out before, but unfortunately I'd forgotten about it.  So really this should be corrected.

Ugggh.  Why do you tell us these things?  Why?

I'll definitely notice this now, even if it's just my imagination ;)

For what it's worth, DarkJedi's and Harmy's projects both grace my shelf at home.  Most people are probably happy with one or the other, but there's an even narrower niche that likes having both.  There's a Venn diagram somewhere in there.

I call DarkJedi's a "preservation" and Harmy's a "reconstruction", but that's just me.

I'm assuming this new version would just be for Star Wars and not for the sequels, correct?  I haven't noticed a single problem with any of them but I'm just curious.

I wasn't asking for a full HD version (that bit wasn't clear), but rather a re-encode to something like 480p but with all the audio options.  Just wondering thats all since my screen wouldn't really benefit from 720p and space is a concern for me.

This is definitely something you could do yourself though.  Download the DVD5 and the AVCHD, use tsMuxerGUI to demux the extra audio tracks from the AVCHD, and then mux them back into the DVD using your favorite DVD authoring software.  But it's going to take some learning on your part and I doubt you're going to get a volunteer to do it for you, since your request is so specific/unlikely to have broader appeal.

If GL changed his mind about releasing OUT, but with a few tweaks.....

Blood Simple did a number of things.  Most importantly, it RESTORED the theatrical soundtrack (due to licensing issues, the VHS had different music).  But it did still change some things to be different from the theatrical version.  In the first shot of the busy bar interior, you could originally see a sound boom hanging in from above, and a reflection of the cameras on a mirror.  Most importantly, the whole "shoes walk to the jukebox" shot got removed, and that's the one that really bugs me.

That said, my point was that this level of tweaking, while occasionally annoying, is more or less normal and I'll tolerate it. Lucas is, as far as I know, the ONLY statistical outlier, and he's way, way, outside the normal range.

With the upcoming 1.2 and ESB 2.0 versions, will there be any way to verify version numbers?

I suppose one way would be to just look for the visual changes between versions, but for that you'd need some sort of changelog (not necessarily comprehensive).

This could be a problem when the 1.2 AVCHD comes out, but the 1.2 DVD5 isn't yet out.

This is another reason I'll only download from the official sites.

Now with your release, I found your “Despecialized Edition” credits to come way too soon after the main credits for the film finished. Your credits come up while the music is still playing in fact. If you truly want to honor the original film to how it was played originally, this is an absolute no, no… it’s almost as bad as what Lucasfilm did the credits in 1997.

Actually I know that while credit is certainly due, I've always been a little uncomfortable with the Despecialized Credits myself.  When other cultural artifacts are restored, there there is sometimes a plaque about the restoration, but that plaque is typically placed near the artifact, not directly attached to it.  The Despecialized Credits always seemed a little bit like graffiti to me.  I'd prefer for the credits to be placed on the disc or case art, or if they must be in the disc contents due to how it's distributed, in a text file or even an unused subtitle track.

I feel pretty uncomfortable complaining about this because I really do appreciate this and feel that credit is absolutely due, but I just wanted to add my voice since the topic has been brought up.

Sure, we'd love it.  It's not like we're fanatics or anything.*

But really, even if he approached this with the best possible intentions, isn't it a given that he'll screw up color timing and sound at the very least?  But even then I'd appreciate it as a much better source for proper restoration projects.

* Okay, that was a little tongue in cheek but I'm serious.  Minor cleanups would put him well within the boundaries of what other directors regularly do.  Sometimes I wonder why they bother and wish they wouldn't, but I don't begrudge them for it.  Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blood Simple, etc.  A certain amount of change is, even if not desirable, tolerable.

Adventures in Raising the Next Generation of Original Star Wars Fans
Time

Just wanting to give this thread a better bump.

There's not much TV watching in our house (yeah one of those), so I've got a four-year-old who hasn't seen much in the way of movies in general, and in particular hasn't seen Star Wars. External influences aren't a big concern yet...in our town, he's more likely to come home with dreadlocks and a bongo than a Jar Jar backpack (and frankly I'd prefer it).

Thanks to Harmy, I can now start him out right, probably around age 5. And in spite of the availability of the GOUT and Laserdisc transfers, I've gone quite a long time without seeing them at all myself and will enjoy coming back to them (sadly, George's embargo against Star Wars has kinda worked for me, haven't seen it in a decade, maybe more).

Anyway, here's how I plan on handling the SE's and PT: if asked about the "larger Star Wars world", or specifically about characters on Star Wars lunchboxes that aren't in the movies, I will say that in addition to the three Star Wars movies, there is a huge amount of novels, comic books, fan fiction, cartoons, fan-made movies, and even fan-made edits or the original movies--most of which isn't very good, but if he's interested I'd be willing to pick up a novel or comic book for him and he can see for himself. As far as I'm concerned the PT's are on equal footing with fan-made movies (the fan in this case being named George), and the SE's are just another fan edit, and if my kid wants to peruse the world of Star Wars fan fiction, he's welcome to it, but George's fan fiction isn't getting priority placement in the pile just because of who he is.
