Now that I think about it....I do remember hearing about that and watched the movie looking for it. That is a good and unobtrusive change....I have no problem with it.

But there is no other noticable changes that I've seen.

Ben Burtt Quits...
Time
Twenty-nine years and 10 months.

No one else besides "Star Wars" creator George Lucas has spent so much time in a galaxy far, far away, up close and personal with Jedi knights, storm troopers, wise old Yoda and those delightful droids R2-D2 and C-3PO as Ben Burtt Jr.

The Syracuse native, who has been sound designer on all six "Star Wars" films, refers to it as his "tour of duty." Almost fresh out of film school with a couple of assignments with low-budget, high-profile filmmakers Roger Corman and Russ Meyer, he was plucked by Lucas for the original "Star Wars."

Through nearly three decades, Burtt also has been in the thick of the progress and process of cinema, from the digital revolution to what is termed "pre-visualization." Ahead of filming, Burtt and fellow technicians film a mock scene which can be shown to Lucas, the cinematographers and camera operators to orient them to the sequence.

With "Sith," Burtt says in a recent phone interview, these small

films would be watched by the actors as they played out a scene. This process, he says, gave them a keener sense of the action, rather than simply acting against blue screen before computer-generated characters and scenes were added.

It is over now and Burtt, who has won four Oscars for sound effects editing and creature and robot voice creation, is moving on. He is joining Pixar Animation. It is, he says, time for a fresh wind to blow.

"George hasn't announced officially what his next projects are," he says. At Lucasfilm, almost everyone works from project to project. The "Star Wars" adventures have guaranteed three years' employment, but nothing past that. Besides, Burtt admits, "The last few years have been frustrating, so I was at a point of change. But I had no official plan."

Yet, the time had come for a new challenge and Pixar came calling. He terms it "the most attractive" of his offers. One reason, Burtt chose Pixar was its Bay Area location. The filmmaker has long been a resident of Northern California not far from Lucas' headquarters at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County and its allied operations. Burtt had no desire to pack up for Hollywood.

More significantly, the sound designer and film editor knew many of the Pixar folks. He recalls that many of the Pixar honchos had been Lucas employees when it was a small division of Lucasfilm.

"I had an office just down from them. We were the big shots," he says with a chuckle.

Soon Lucas sold the operation to Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer. Eventually that business became Pixar, which turned out the blockbusters "Finding Nemo," "Toy Story" flicks and "Monsters, Inc."

This week, after a brief break for R & R, the 56-year-old joins that firm. It will not be his first experience with animation.

When the now-Pixar cohorts were working down the hall at Lucasfilm, they persuaded Burtt to try his hand. The result was "The Adventures of Andre and Wally B.," the tale of a bulbous-nosed android named Wally and a persistent bee, the other title creature. Words of wifely wisdom Wives are often said to be the severest critics of their husbands' work. Just ask Burtt. A couple of weeks ago, the co-editor of "Revenge of the Sith" showed a finished print at his alma mater, the University of Southern California. He was worried about its reception and that it might not satisfy fans. He confided his concerns to his wife, Peg. But, after the screening, he was heartened at the cheers and applause the film received. Burtt says, "Peg (in her first look), who is not a 'Star Wars' fan, told me, 'I really can't trust you, Ben.' " Bet that it came as his greatest compliment.

I might be wrong here....but the Raiders that is available on DVD now is un-altered. I've never heard of any digital stuff thrown in there.

I remember watching it and not seeing anything really changed....even the sound mix didn't strike me as tampered with.

The THX one I would like to see.....

American Graphiti was released on DVD in its original form. There was a bar bones release of it and it is still available, but it is now bundled with AG 2.

But watch out.....LucASS has been quoted saying that he is working on some special release of AG....so snatch up those copies while you can......cuz history is about to be re-written again.

Star Wars Saga 16 Disc Aluminum Case
Time
I was eyeing these cases a bit ago and I figured that here is what you could do....

You could do a complete Star Wars film collection...use the standard DVD cases, but have the extra tray so you have 2 disks in there.

That way you can get the OOT, the original version of SW without the episode 4, the PT, the clone wars cartoon, the SE DVD, the SE VHS, Musical Journey, the DVD Bonus, the ewoks cartoon, the ewoks films, the droids cartoons....plus plenty of bonus stuff.

When you think about it, you could have a 32 disk set of just about everything Star Wars that's ever been released up to Episode 3 being released on DVD. There may even be room for the rumored bonus disk in the 6 movie set that's supposed to have deleted scenes from the OT (wouldn't bank on this....probably will change)....

The guy did do a god job with the sound effects so let's be respectful.

The PT being crappy is one man's responsibility.

Burtt created the Vader breathing.....so let's not have any "door hitting him in the ass" comments.

And I want to see something a little more concrete.....that's not even a story!!! And who's Granny is that?

Info: OT 'master prints' question & Lucas' claims it no longer exists
Time
I agree....I never bought that line about him being unwilling to spend the money to remaster the OT. It was already done when he did the SE. So, it shouldn't be a stretch to get the OOT in presentable shape for DVD.

Many things that I hear LucASS say are out and out-right lies.

Just read that Gary Kurtz interview that is floating around here. There was never any plans to have Greedo shoot first. Kurtz said that while shooting the scene...it was intended to have Han shoot first and that's that. Now, 20 years later, LucASS claims that was his intention all along to have Greedo shoot first.

So, IMHO, take anything he says with a large grain of salt. Cuz it's probably complete bullshit.

If you really want to make insinuations about Lucas' political motiviations, point out that the name of the "evil" leader of the Trade Federation is Nute (Newt, as in Gingrich) Gunray (reversed Raygun...or Reagan).

You know....I really hate that shit. If you want to make a political statement, then go on CNN and say it. If you want to work it into a movie, then do so, but keep it vague.

Nute Gunray my ass....more like NO ORIGINALITY to me!!!!

I believe that he had a basic storyline at the beginning and he used one part of it for ANH. But it was changed and altered. Then each subsequent film was written and underwent lots of changes and alterations. That is probably why the OT in itself, does not gel perfectly either.

All in all though, I agree. Lucas was making this up as he went. And that storyline that he initially wrote went through more changes than any of us can imagine, making everything very convoluted and impossible to piece together in a cohesive and logical way.

See!!! This why you never start your story in the middle!!! And dammit.....a little planning goes a long way.

Obi-Wan Interpretation
Time
Here's some stuff I'd like to throw out for public comsumption...

In ANH, the conversation between Obi-Wan and Luke goes as such...

Luke: No, my father didn't fight in the wars. He was a navigator on a spice freighter.
Obi-Wan: That's what your uncle told you. He didn't hold with your father's ideals and thought he should stay here and not gotten involved.

Later in ROTJ...
Obi-Wan: When I first met your father, he was already a great pilot, but I was amazed at how strong the force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi.

Here's my interpretations on what possibly should have happened in the prequels then...

Obi-Wan met an adult Anakin and seeing that he was a great pilot and strong with the force, trains him against the wishes of the Jedi, possibly even in secret without the Jedi knowing. Obviously Owen didn't think the same as Anakin. Anakin must have had some ideals about making the universe a better place by winning the war (probably the Clone Wars) and left to join the fight. Owen, of course, didn't agree with this and told Anakin to stay out of it. The part about the navigator on the spice freighter is some lie Owen told Luke to cover up Anakin's past so that Luke wouldn't run off either.

Do any of you agree with this line of thinking? Now that the prequels are over, I find myself thinking about the OT more and more and what clues it gave us all these years as to what happened in the earlier episodes. I keep trying to reconstuct what the OT hints at about what happened in the prequels.

And I find those hints to be superior and ultimately more fascinating than the story Lucas told in the prequels....

Kashyyyk question - spoilers

First - been lurking here an age, loving what I'm seeing, but finally have something worth contributing:

Back in late 2004, starwars.com featured a story about the Holiday Special and references to it having been cut from the DVD extras disc - it's not there now, but this confirms it was around - http://www.starwarsholidayspecial.com/news.htm

This story went round loads of news sources, and pretty much advertised the HS to people (like me) who had never heard of it. That led me here, and then to myspleen. So far from trying to destroy every copy, this actually created a demand. But also what it did was tell me a bit about Chewie's back story, including the giant trees etc.

So, when we all watched ROTS, there would have been plenty of us saying 'Ah, how clever, they've taken that bit of the EU and woven it into this - the Wookies realy do live on Kashyyyk, and in giant trees, just like in that terrible old TV show'. Which must have been the idea of mentioning the HS all along.

Except - did anyone else feel the Wookies were a token offering to the OT diehards? They are only shown so Yoda can react to order 66, and then say bye to Chewie, and we feel all warm becuase we like the link up to the OT. That scene could have been set on any planet, with any race, just like all the other order 66s. OK, I'm just as sentimental as the next man, so I can go with that, just to hear Yoda's line.

But. Guarding a Jedi, I would imagine, sticks in the brain - not every Wookie is called. So, I might imagine that when he next sees someone wielding a light sabre (Luke on the Falcon en route to Alderaan), while talking about the force, it might have crossed his mind to mention it? Something like 'Wow a light sabre, haven't seen one in a while. Hey Han, this force stuff's not so daft, I knew a little green fella once, and could he ever look after himself'. Or maybe 'Han, remember that little green man I told you about, ask them about him, maybe you'll beleive me then'.

No. Instead, he plays chess. Am I the only one to spot this hole? Or is Chewie as forgetful as Lucas?

I believe that Chewie was added in there for marquee value only. Just to get the OT faithful in the theater (like we needed an incentive like that anyway, ya know...). Chewie had no role in the plot.....barely did anything either. It was depressing a bit, but it wasn't a surprise. I figured it would be a cheap way to try and get people in to see the movie.

As for the continuity issues it raises.....they are very good questions. When Chewie sees Obi-Wan in the Cantina, he has to recognize that Obi is a Jedi and wouldn't he ask Obi about the Jedi or Yoda as you mentioned?

These are good points. It only strengthens the notion that Lucas was doing these just to get them done and make as much money as possible while doing it.

Star Wars is a part of who I am and not just a film for me. It was a way of being. It has been a reminder of how to live my life.

Dude...seriously...you are WAAAAAAAAAAY too wrapped up in this. Don't get me wrong....it's not bad. There are worse things to be so obsessed with than Star Wars...you could be shooting up heroin.

To console you, I will share my feelings on the state of Star Wars....

I chuck the whole SW mess up to this one statement: Lucas is a schmuck who blew the opportunity of a lifetime. His name could have been right up there next to Tolkien as one of the greatest storytellers of the modern age and he blew the whole thing by not putting in the effort it deserved.

Star Wars is the greatest missed opportunity ever.

Disheartening? Yes.

But you know what? There is some storyteller out there right now who is going to learn from Lucas' mistakes and that person is going to create the most wonderous story ever told. I have no idea what it will be, but I'm sure it will be great....and that will be worth waiting for.
