Info Wanted: My Own Preservation...
Time
MeBeJedi...you are the man!!!! This is turning out to be a whole lot easier than I expected.

Damn, I'm glad I found this board!!!

Could you give me more info on the DVD-Lab program? I've been to their site and they offer several programs in addition to DL. Do I need any of those specifically?

Just for my information and cuz I'm getting interested in the whole thing...what are IFO and BUP file? And could you post those links to all that info? I do have many other
VHS tapes I want to convert to DVD...and I would like to know just how much I can really do?

Also, I have some homemade DVDs of an old TV show and the episodes were recorded together as one title....I would like to break the episodes up into separate titles....how do I go about doing this? Is there another program that I need to do video editing or will DVD-Lab work great with that too.

Once again, thanks for all the help here, guys!!! You are all awesome!!!

The Star Wars Saga DVD Box Set
Time

DVDs have had Seamless Branching Technology integrated into them for a long, long time now...look at James Cameron. Almost each one of his films has incorporated Seamless Branching in order to offer both the theatrical and Director's Cuts of his films (The Abyss, Terminator 2, Aliens). Fox has proved that they are masters of the technology.

Fusion...I didn't know they could do that seamless stuff.

I always wondered how the T2 DVD was able to have 2 or 3 versions of the same movie on one disc plus all those extras.
I should amend my dream set there to account for this.

Good, but: that... monstrosity would cost 1 thousand dollars...

Monstrosity is the exact word to use.....cuz LF would be giving us fans exactly what we want if they put out this box set.....and giving us what we want is a monstrosity to them.

You know....I've heard about several differing version of the OT. Just how many are there really?

I've heard of the original release of SW with out the Episode 4 and that's about it. I thought that everything that came out in the theaters after that (SW with episode 4 in crawl, ESB and ROTJ) were what was available on VHS for all these years...

Also, is the faces set altered in any way?

Why doesn't Lucas do this?
Time
Since the OT and the PT obviously don't look, feel or flow very well with each other and Lucas seems adamant about changing the OT to better compliment the PT, why doesn't he do this?

Why not just completely redo all the special effects of the entire OT? Go back to the original principal photography footage, digitize it and then set the ILM folks on it and literally create brand new effects, etc. Essentially, all the stuff involving actors would be the same (just enhanced a bit) and all the SFX would be brand new. Also, bring John Williams back in to re-record the soundtracks to better fit whatever changes occur.

Basically, Lucas would be making brand new movies.

Oh!!! And include the original theatrical versions with them when they come out on DVD.....that is a requirement in any case.

For some reason, this seems like a no brainer when you think about it. I would love to see newer effect set to the old movies. It may or may not make the movies better, but I would be curious as all hell.

The Star Wars Saga DVD Box Set
Time
Hey everyone....I posted this on the official Star Wars message boards only to be locked and added to another thread (and then disappeared shortly thereafter). When the Prequels were announced way back when, I was really interested in how the whole saga will be made available once it is finished. My mind worked overtime for years trying to think what that huge set of all the movies would be like. Well, here is the set that would make me a very happy SW fan.....

The Star Wars Saga DVD Collection - 12 disks containing both George Lucas' final and definitive vision of the saga as well as the original theatrical versions of each of the films. Included are extras spanning the entire 30 years of Star Wars as well as new documentaries and archival material. Specifics are broken down as such:

Disk 1 thru 6 are the new Special Editions of each film. Lucas will undoubtedly do more work on the prequels as well as continue to fine tune the original trilogy. The guy just doesn't know when to quit. Stringent perfectionism = obsessive compulsive disorder...methinks anyway.

Disk 1 - Episode 1: The Phantom Menace - Special Edition
This is Lucas' newly reworked and expanded version of Episode 1. All the usual audio and chapter features are included as well as several new commentaries (one with cast, one with special effects and one with Lucas and John Williams).

Disk 2 - Episode 2: Attack Of The Clones - Special Edition
This is Lucas' newly reworked and expanded version of Episode 2. All the usual audio and chapter features are included as well as several new commentaries (one with cast, one with special effects and one with Lucas and John Williams).

Disk 3 - Episode 3: Revenge Of The Sith - Special Edition
This is Lucas' newly reworked and expanded version of Episode 3. All the usual audio and chapter features are included as well as several new commentaries (one with cast, one with special effects and one with Lucas and John Williams).

Disk 4 - Episode 4: A New Hope - Special Edition
This is Lucas' newly reworked and expanded version of Episode 4. All the usual audio and chapter features are included as well as several new commentaries (one with cast, one with special effects and one with Lucas and John Williams).

Disk 5 - Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back - Special Edition
This is Lucas' newly reworked and expanded version of Episode 5. All the usual audio and chapter features are included as well as several new commentaries (one with cast, one with special effects and one with Lucas and John Williams).

Disk 6 - Episode 6: Return Of The Jedi - Special Edition
This is Lucas' newly reworked and expanded version of Episode 6. All the usual audio and chapter features are included as well as several new commentaries (one with cast, one with special effects and one with Lucas and John Williams).

Disk 7 thru 9 are the double sided disks which would enable them to put one whole movie on each side. This would be perfect for the original theatrical versions of each film.

Disk 7 Side 1 - Episode 1: The Phantom Menace - Original Theatrical Version
Disk 7 Side 2 - Episode 2: Attack Of The Clones - Original Theatrical Version

Disk 8 Side 1 - Episode 3: Revenge Of The Sith - Original Theatrical Version
Disk 8 Side 2 - Episode 4: A New Hope - Original Theatrical Version

Disk 9 Side 1 - Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back - Original Theatrical Version
Disk 9 Side 2 - Episode 6: Return Of The Jedi - Original Theatrical Version

Disk 10 thru 12 are also double sided disks where they could put a whole side of bonus features for each film.

Disk 10 Side 1 - Episode 1 Bonus Features - this would be the features that are already available in the current DVD release of Episode 1.
Disk 10 Side 2 - Episode 2 Bonus Features - this would be the features that are already available in the current DVD release of Episode 2.

Disk 11 Side 1 - Episode 3 Bonus Features - this would be the features that will be available in the soon-to-be DVD release of Episode 3.
Disk 11 Side 2 - Episode 4 Bonus Features

Disk 12 Side 1 - Episode 5 Bonus Features
Disk 12 Side 2 - Episode 6 Bonus Features

The bonus features on Episodes 4-6 should include:
From Star Wars To Jedi: The Making Of A Saga documentary

Empire Of Dreams documentary - however, they should expand the thing to 6 hours and cut it into 2 hour parts for each of the OT bonus disks. This documentary was great...I want to see more added and more focus on each film separately.

Trailers - get all the teasers, full trailers and re-release trailers for the OT.

Bloopers - do blooper reels from wach film and make them Easter Eggs like in the prequel bonus disks.

Any vintage documentaries and interviews with cast and crew made during the making of the OT.

Star Wars Merchandise Photo Archive - a full photo archive of all the Star Wars products that were released between 1977 and 1985.

Original Star Wars Kenner Toys TV Commercials - I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see these again!!!!

The Star Wars Holiday Special - the full uneditied 2 hour special without commercials....I know.....fat chance on this one....but this is a dream set, ppl.

Holiday Special documentary - if by chance someone at Lucasfilm does see this and decides that I have a great idea here and puts the Holiday Special in this dream set, then they should do a short 15 or 20 minute documentary on it....just for laughs. Actually, seeing Lucas cringe just talking about it would be worth it.....or just him saying, "What the hell was I thinking?!??!!?"

I think that just about wraps it up, people. Opinions? Comments? Brainfarts?

Who has caved?
Time
I am a very happy and very satisfied #1.

I don't own the DVDs and don't care about them.

I have watched them since my dad bought them for himself. Actually, I watched Star Wars and couldn't take it after that. I just watched the bonus disk and gave it back to the dad. I will borrow it again to watch them all and see the changes...just to be prepped for Episode 3.

I won't ever buy the OT on DVD unless it includes the original versions.

Info Wanted: My Own Preservation...
Time
There is a decoder that will allow the VHS to be copied to DVD, so no problems there.

There are menus, just ordinary ones....basically a menu with all the titles.....and the recorder automatically makes chapters every 6 minutes or so as you record.

What are the VOBs? Files on the DVD? I have Windows 2000, so no worries there.

Another thing I'm hoping is that the quality doesn't get degraded when I go into the computer and then back on to DVD again....will there be any problems with that?

Info Wanted: My Own Preservation...
Time

Hey There!!!

First of all, you guys are great. Reading about all your projects is fantastic and is really encouraging. I’m glad that so many are so unwilling to let go of the OT.

As for my own preservation project, it is FAR less ambitious than anything I’ve read here. Here is what I am planning to do and I would like to put it out here for feedback and to get some basic questions answered…

I have a Sony DVD Recorder standalone unit, a Sony VCR and the VHS copies of the “faces” edition of the OT. What I would like to do is simply copy the VHS to DVD using the recorder. This is simple enough. I’m not that concerned with picture or sound quality…as long as it is an average to above average copy, I am perfectly happy. Besides, my first exposure to the SW and ESB was from bootlegs that my dad bought back in the early 80s before even Jedi came out. These bootlegs were filmed in the theater and were of terrible quality, but they still had a certain atmosphere and feel that made them special to me, so in the end, I’m not looking for DVD quality copies of the OT. I’ve watched them is VHS quality for years…I don’t mind watching them like that for the rest of my life.

Here’s the part where I need help from you guys. What I would like to do is add custom DVD menus and such and make it as close to an actual official DVD release as possible.
Once I record the VHS to DVD with the recorder, how do I get what’s on that DVD into the computer? What do I use to make menus and such and then burn it back to DVD on my computer? I have a DVD burner for the PC and I also have a program for DVD menus called MY DVD. I have absolutely zero experience in this and am not afraid to try and fail a few times before I get it.

Any comments or suggestions?

I appreciate any and all help I get…and keep up the good work!!!
