Betamax Tapes
Time
This is sort of a non-Star Wars question, but people may find it relates to the preservation projects anyway....

I have an old betamax tape of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Now understand that this is the ORIGINAL, FIRST VIDEO RELEASE of the movie, meaning that it is now 23 to 24 years old.

This was the copy I used to watch as a kid and I saved it when our old betamax VCR and tapes went by the wayside. I would like to convert it to DVD as it's sort of sentimental in a way. I can get a Betamax VCR on eBay with no problems for the conversion.

My question is......is the tape still playable? I've heard of old tapes getting put into machines and melting and ruinning VCR heads, thus destroying the tape and the machine completely. Since the Betamax machines are pretty expensive on eBay, I don't want to buy one and then ruin it since I would re-sell it once I finished converting the tape in order to get my money back.

Also, I have not stored this tape in the best conditions either over the years. It has been kept in a trunk with other momentos in the garage year round for more than 5 years at least.

Given all this information and any experience of those of you who know about this sort of stuff....what are my chances of converting this thing successfully? Should I just forget the whole thing?

I know those films, I know Romero's work, and have seen some scenes from Dawn and Day, but I haven't seen those films because they are completely unavailable here. Maybe if they release an uncut box with the 4 films, I'll buy it.

I doubt there will be a set of all 4 films together.....I think each one is owned by a different company. I think Dawn and Day are owned by the same, but Night is definitely owned by another company. Universal will own Land, so a set of all 4 is very unlikely....

Hi i just watched that movie Shaun of the Dead,

I've heard it was pretty good...but I have yet to see it though.

On a similar note.....a good sort of spoof/tribute to the Dead movies is Return Of The Living Dead. That movie is just waaaaaay too funny.

I just can't get enough of the grue and anything new by Romero automatically falls into that catagory. I am way more exicted about this then anything else that has come out in the past five years.

I'll be there opening night. I can't wait.

Me too.....am definitely there opening night!!!

For the uninitiated, this is the Dead Trilogy:

Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
Dawn Of The Dead (1979)
Day Of The Dead (1985)

I would highly, highly, highly recommend Dawn to anyone who hasn't seen any of them. It is by far, the most popular of the 3. Night and Dawn have been remade. The Night remake is worth seeing. I hated the Dawn remake. Supposedly there is going to be a Day remake, but I hope not.

The films are not stupid, brainless horror flicks. There is some serious social commentary in each one that reflect the decade in which it was made. You will find that Romero is a very, very good writer and doesn't cheapen his story at all.

These movies are not just mere cult movies, they are in the upper echelon of great horror films. They most certainly should be seen.

Final Scripts
Time
Does anyone know where on the web I can find the complete script to all 3 of the OT films?

I'm looking for the exact script of the movie......not an early draft or anything.....just the final version.

I need it for reference purposes and I don't want to have to watch the movies umpteen times.....

Did you know they've been trying to get a sequel off the ground for some time? Looked like it was a go a couple years back- fellow Canadian Todd McFarlane (jerkwad of Spawn and toy-making fame) was going to fund it for them but backed out at the last minute.

The script by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis is called 'Home Brew' and focuses on the MacKenzie's attempt to make their own brand of beer, eh!

A highschool friend and I used to do a pretty darn good MacKenzie impression- good enough that a local radio station let us do on-air bits and occasional weather reports.

Now I hate McFARTlane even more!!! To think, I used to collect many of the figures he puts out. Glad I sold them all now!!!!

I understand what you mean completely Shim......some of the fanfic ideas I hear are more cringe-worthy than anything LucASS could write.
But I'm sure there's someone out there who can come up with some great stuff.

BTW, my version of Star Wars definitely does a better take on Boba Fett. Boba and Jango were brothers along with a whole host of Mandalorian Warriors who play a very integral part in the Clone Wars (which by the way involves the Separatists having a droid army AND a clone army against the Republic whose armies are made up of the warriors of its various worlds like Wookiees, Itorians, Mon Calamari, etc, etc). Through the course of the war, all of the Mandalorians are killed, but take more than a few Jedi with them. Jango is killed leaving Boba as the last Mandalorian, who aids Darth Vader in hunting the last of the Jedi. Once the Jedi are all destroyed, there's really nothing Boba can do but become a bounty hunter....who aids the Empire sometimes.

And Boba meets his end at the Sarlacc pit only to blow the damn thing up and fly out of it where he and Luke get into one of the most knockdown ass-kicking fights you'd ever seen.

I know that whole blowing the Sarlacc pit up thing is from the EU (Bounty Hunter Wars), but it is just too damn cool. No way I can come up with something better than that. That's what I mean about the EU, there's some really good stuff there....it's just scattered about and some of the really good stuff is stuck in otherwise crappy stories.

i am not saying its impossible, i am just saying that it is extremely hard, and that alot of fans dont realize just how hard it actually is to make a good storyline. i feel that alot of them under estimate the task.

I'm sure most would have a problem with it, considering some of the ideas I hear, I would prefer that most fans not make an attempt.

But if there's someone out there who is a writer and wants to take a crack at it since they probably have some writing skills anyway, I would welcome an honest, balls to the wall effort.

I agree MBJ......it is not impossible.

I've been seriously thinking on and off about doing 12 novellas that are about 100 pages in length where each novella would be an episode basically.

The story is big enough that there should be 6 parts to the "Prequel Era" and 6 parts to the "Original Trilogy Era". I've actually come up with most of it, but haven't really done anything with it cuz who would really care what some FAN has to write...

And there are some really GREAT EU stuff that would work perfectly with my version. Not really whole stories from the EU, just pieces from here and there. They Kyber Crystal for instance would play a huge half in prequel part, while I would throw in Thrawn in the OT half, but he would be much more ruthless and sinister. Also Wedge and Rogue Squadron would play a very significant role in the OT half. You have the Jedi as the central characters aiding the main characters (Anakin, Obi-Wan) while Luke would get the help of the various rebel people like the Rogues.

I swear I could lay LucASS to shame....but it's like I said....who would read it and who would really care. I didn't create Star Wars, so what's the point? The guy to do it who mattered farted it all up royally.

Now that I couldn't have said better than myself. Well I already posted that the PT doesn't exist to me and I'm still wondering what Vader was like before his change, and the mystery that is Fett, guess we'll never know.

I personally think that a group of fans are going to make three movies all on their own that will be underground sensations which will be heralded as THE films that should have been made.

Or some fan is going to write his own fan-fics of the entire saga and do it right from the get-go. Most fan-fics like that are crappy, but there will be someone ambitious enough to re-imagine Star Wars like that.

If there are any fans out there who are thinking of making their own films of the prequels, I would humbly pledge my writing skills to your efforts.....I would LOVE to be involved in such an endeavor.

you know i cant wait from lots of fan to do this and start realizing that is alot harder then they thought to write everything in exactly the right way.

Dude....I could re-write the whole damn saga and make it rock ten times better than LucASS did. It's not hard at all.....everything is practically spelled out in OOT!!! And if you throw in some of the great stuff from the EU....oh man.....I could make LucASS look really bad!!!

It would require very, very, very little original ideas from me....that's for sure. It's all already there.

Why Kill Padme?
Time
I think ultimately for the good of the story overall (flawed that it is), Padme had to die. It was just more dramatic. Unfortunately, it's execution was loused up royally.

As for Leia remembering Padme.........well, LucASS has made it clear that different things in the saga can be taken all different kinds of ways. I think the most logical solution is that since Leia obviously knew she was adopted, she must have asked Bail and his wife about her. The Organas probably did tell Leia something about Padme, just not everything. With Leia being force-sensitive, she probably just tapped into the "feeling" of Padme through whatever the Organas told her.

I know....there's an awful lot of probablys there, but I think it somewhat holds water. I don't like having to connect the dots like that though. You can toy with people about thematic stuff like "this could mean this" or "it could mean the exact opposite", but this is a tangible plot point. It deserves a concrete explanation. It's not an important point in the story, meaning it doesn't effect the story in a major way, but it needs some coverage for sure.

LucASS basically wrote himself into a corner with the OT and honestly, the prequels could only have been one way and one way only. But for some asinine reason, LucASS has decided to go in the complete opposite direction of what the OT dictated to be done.

It's almost like blatant sabotage to me. Why would you create half a story that's so great, and then tell the other half in a way that it dimishes the first half. There is no one in this world who's gonna tell me that the PT and the OT gel perfectly together. My problem is they SHOULD. A writer has a responsibility to give his creation the best possible effort. Tolkien obviously threw himself into LOTR and look at how those books turned out. This is the most frustrating thing to me. LucASS could have been right up there with Tolkien as one of the great imaginations of all time and he basically blew it and for what?

ARGH!!!! I hate thinking about this!!!!

Still would have liked that to be the real Lost Cut though.

Heh, funny thing. I just noticed an interesting parallel: Anakin and Neo are both chosen ones and both dream of their loved ones dying.

Did you see the 2003 MTV movie awards?
They did a spoof of the Matrix Reloaded. These two dudes were lost in the matrix and were at the big underground party.
One asked "Where are we?"
Andy Dick, who was rocking out and dancing with glow sticks between his fingers, said:
"We're in an underground city where the last remaining humans live, and the machines are coming to kill us. Doesn't that just make you want to party? YEAH!!!" and he continues dancing.

Hey....if I knew the human race was gonna be wiped out and I had some free time before the big battle.....I'd party all ballistic myself!!!
