Didn't Walmart back track and say as long as there is demand they'd still sell VHS (I'm thinking cause of some out-rage)? I don't see what the big deal about VHS is though, DVD players can be had for $25 and movies cost $10+ (average being $20). Cost certainly aint an issue and you can get converters to hook up the dvd player if your TV doesn't have the right inputs. But I just say buy a new TV at that point.

Reading the inteview I think it was published the 1st week after the OT DVD was released so it's been a while since it's come out. Nothing really new or ground breaking since then. And he seems to be saying it half assed and I somehow don't believe him. Bring on the X0 set baby! * j/k *

Yes, I do recall hearing that Walmart backtracked on that cuz there was a lot of pissed off people about the VHS tapes. So, the death bell hasn't been rung yet. It will though in the next few years. The format is pretty much dead....

Uh, isn't that the only reason to release *any* home video? I mean, the filmmaker already created their work and it played in cinemas.

Actually, I am almost dreading this release. Cuz it's going to be a slipshod job and we're going to be disappointed with it.

I know I'm sounding overtly negative and it seems like I'm whining just to whine, but we've gotten less than steller releases from LucASSfilm that should have gotten royalty treatment (SW DVD release).

Sorry, I know I sound like a whiney fan, but if he's not going to put effort into it, then we're not going to get something that is the best possible release of the films.

Sad, really.

Kevin Smith interview in Rolling Stone on fans - Couldn't have said it better myself...

This new Vader cycle (the prequels) has split the one-time Old Republic that was Star Wars fandom into two warring factions: the Rebellion, and the normal people with a sense of perspective who don’t need a term from the Star Wars lexicon to define them. The Rebellion is populated by the joyless, cynical ubertrolls who, sadly, take up the most space on the Internet. These are the hollow men and women who marched into the prequels demanding that Lucas recapture their lost Star Wars youth for them – that simple time in their lives when they had the excuse of prepubescence to explain why they were still virgins. With that much investment in make-believe, its little wonder they emerged as more twisted by the dark side than young Skywalker himself. The rest of us who grew in the sixteen years between Jedi and Phantom Menace view the new trilogy for what it is: three movies, not three impossible-to-fulfill expectations of folks who need a bearded billionaire in flannel to dream for them.”

- Kevin Smith, Rolling Stone Magazine Interview, June 2nd 2005

Quote

"The original 'Star Wars' movies," said Parker.

"Yeah," echoed Stone. "The feeling I had when I liked it."

"That movie was our religion," said Parker. "It was basically saying, 'Hey, there's this power out there, and we can all sort of tap into it, and it's us and it's everything, and anyone can do this.' And then suddenly the new ones came out, and it's like, 'Well, no, it's all genetics. It's all in your blood.' "
"Horrible," Stone said of the prequels. "Beyond all the wooden acting and the stupid fights and all the terrible scripts, the very core of 'Star Wars' was ruined in these new ones. The idea that you're born with the force is so anti the original 'Star Wars.' Even though George Lucas made them all, he's wrong."

When asked which character they hate the most, Parker doesn't miss a beat: "Anyone in the prequels."
"Anything in any of the new ones," Stone agreed. "They don't exist to me. I don't even know what you're talking about. The new 'Star Wars' don't exist in my reality. Lucas is just an insane guy up in San Francisco now."

Strangely and ironically enough, these two parties don't really disagree with one other. Standing alone, both quotes are 50% right and 50% wrong. But again, together they don't really disagree with one other.

BTW, I consider Kevin Smith and Trey Parker/ Matt Stone are on the same level of excellence as filmmakers.

Welcome to the boards man!!! Hope you enjoy our little band of eccentrics here.....

Now, first of all...those quotes are not really related. They're talking about two different things, at least they way I'm reading them.

Second, Trey and Matt are way more clever than KS could ever hope to be. True, they both use a lot of potty humor and the like, but Trey and Matt are just the masters. KS was doing it before them, yeah....but those two guys have surpassed KS and left him in the dust. Besides, KS never takes on "issues" in the media like Trey and Matt do. KS typically stays focused on pop culture stuff.

I remember reading this post way back. I read the article too. I also wonder how it slipped under our radar. Even I didn't seem to pay much attention to it.

Maybe it was the PROBABLY in LucASS' statement that made most of us gloss over it.

It would be extremely nice to get these versions on DVD, but they will be bare bones and probably shit transfers.

He said he wouldn't spend the effort (or money) into doing a proper restoration, so we can just guess what kind of quality we're going to get.

My guess is that it will just make all these various fan edits a little easier to do, but the fan edits are going to be the defining legacy of the OOT, sort of an underground passing-down from generation to generation.

Sounds pretty dramatic, huh? But it's pretty cool to me.

Does the Superman DVD have any of the extended scenes as extras?

Nope....not that I noticed anyway......can someone esle verify this.....I don't own the DVD...just borrowed it from my Dad....

The subject was then dropped.

You know....this sounds like it's been LucASS's whole approach to Star Wars ever since the special editions.....

What if we put Jabba back in ANH...
What if we make Greedo shoot first...
What if have Anakin say "YIPPEE"!!!
What if we have this all CGI character that is just like Roger Rabbit.....cuz he was kinda cute and made me laugh....
What if we explained the force as being caused by some thing living in our cells!!! That sounds cool....people will jsut LOVE that.....

What if we use all these special effects, John and totally take away from the story......everyone's going to complain anyway, so why not give them something to complain about....

What if we just not explain why Leia remembers Padme even though she was just an infant......I wrote myself into a corner on that one and I can't figure out how the hell to explain it.....

What if we have Vader scream Noooooooo just like in Frankenstein......hey, I'm working on burnout here....stop laughing Rick.......you want to keep working for me.....then you better start acting like my bitch....

What if we have this puppet Yoda that looks like a heroin addict.....I'm sure no one will notice....I sure won't...and I'm the director.....

What if we all just do what we can to make it look good enough....after all.....think of the merchandise we can make money from this....so let's just do what we absolutely have to.......look, I don't care is there's a good story here.......I'm saving my Citizen Kane style cinematic masterpiece for my Howard The Duck sequel.........

Some play back really well, some are dropout ridden and/or have severe tracking issues. (If only the the extended tv cut of Superman was on one of the good tapes!) I don't think your copy would kill a recorder, unless it's got mold inside the shell or something. But it's a large expense for just one tape since your options for getting a working deck are either Ebay or someone like Mister Betamax. (Who refurbishes and sells betas at a premium.) Which version of TMP do you have? The original theatrical cut, or the "Special Longer Version"?

It's the original theatrical cut. It's sort of sentimental for some crazy reason. Probably cuz it's the exact tape I used to watch as a kid. I'm sure the picture is probably horrible, but if I can do it with minimal expense....I'd like to try and see how it turns out.

I have done tape surgery a few times.....so I will have to dig out the tape and dissect to let you know about the mold. I doubt it does though. It was always in a dry place, but it was just hot or cold cuz it was outside in the garage.

I'm just wondering if it will destroy the machine and all. I really don't want that to happen. It sounds like I have a 50/50 chance here....

Oh....and that Superman TV version doesn't have anything really different in it....it's just got tons and tons of extra scenes. I can't watch the DVD version of the movie cuz it feels wrong. There's too much good stuff missing.

Doubtful.....the man seems to dislike us fans. Beats me as to why.....HE'S the one who screwed with his own films and caused us outrage.

When you think about it, all the fan deluges of hate and criticism that LucASS gets are his own doing.....

TV shows will turn SW into Star Trek and it will wear on everyone to the point where it will disappear altogether and be just a shadow of the greatness that SW once was.....

You can't really say that without seeing any of the finished product. Lucas intends for the show to be filmed like a movie, then broken up into little 1 hour segments. From that standpoint, I think it will be fine.

Funny....he made 3 two hours movies that sucked ass, so what makes you think this will work out? It will just be a longer ass suck session we will sit through...

Don't get me wrong.....I will watch the show. Star Wars is in my blood and although I want to walk away from it after the PT, I find it hard as hell to, but I really want it all to just end and have Star Wars fade into memory. No books, shows, comics....nothing. Maybe...just maybe games. Those would be good.

But I have my doubts that this show will be any good unless LucASS has someone else write it. If he writes it, forget it. It will suck. He's at his best when he's not writing or directing, but giving a general direction and refining an idea.

And as for this remembering Bail's wife stuff....I don't get where any of you are coming up with that. Luke said, "Your real mother"....sounds pretty certain to me what he's asking about.

Anakin & Obi-Wan: The Friendship We Never Really Saw
Time
Agreed Seiji...

I thought the Obi-Wan/Anakin friendship was completely squandered from the beginning. In TPM, Obi-Wan seems dead set against Anakin getting trained. That hardly sounds like "I was amazed at how strong the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi" from ROTJ.

That friendship should be the a central point in the PT because the fight at the end of EP3 would have been far more emotional and effective if we really felt that two friends were battling it out to the death. Instead, we sort of don't really care cuz these two never exactly seemed like good friends. The only thing that fight has going for it is that it's been lingering in our minds for 20 years giving it some sort of legendary status.

This is just one more thing in a long list of stuff that LucASS dropped the ball on.

For folks who haven't seen Romero's original zombie films= please do. They work on so many levels, from gore to slapstick to social commentary. Just forget all the crap knock-offs and remakes that are out there. Pop some Jiffy-Pop and spend this coming weekend watching all three originals.

'Dawn' had always been my favorite, but the more I watch 'Day' the more I like it. It was a definate change from the comic-booky nature of 'Dawn' but is very, very effective.

And Cable- Return of the Living Dead rates as one of my all-time favorite films. Funny, gorey and and perfect offshoot/homage to the Romero films. Plus, its the film that gave us "Brraaaiiiinnnnssss...." and a line I so often repeat- "send... more... paramedics..."

Good thing I'm seeing Batman this Weds, as I'll have the weekend and next week to re-zombify myself!

greencapt.....I get what you mean about Day. I've seen it a few times and always thought it was good, but never really clicked with me.
Then when it came out on DVD a few years back, I bought it, watched it and for some reason, just totally clicked with me. I kept feeling compelled to watch it again and again. It's been a long time since that happened. I can't get enough of that movie now. It's a total tie with Dawn now, IMO.

Return is one of the total gems in horror. I'm sure many simply dismissed it and probably didn't get that it was a homage. It's not to be taken too seriously at all. And it has some great one-liners!!!

Send more cops!!!

That part in the beginning when the one dude used the pick on the cadaver....."I HIT THE FUCKIN BRAIN!!!!"

Or the part with the chick dancing naked in the cemetary with the bad-ass punk dude....."No one understand me, man. You think this is a costume....this is a way of life, man. Yo man, show some respect for the dead."

Where the hell have i heard that series before...was it a bbc show in the 80's

The Dark Tower series is probably the hardest damn thing in the world to describe......here's the books:

1: The Gunslinger
2: The Drawing Of The Three
3: The Waste Lands
4: Wizard And Glass
5: The Wolves Of The Calla
6: Song Of Susannah
7: The Dark Tower

I think the best way to describe it is as a cross of the Clint Eastwood Man With No Name Trilogy, The Lord Of The Rings and various science fiction ideas (time travel, robots, etc).

It is a series that even the most casual Stephen King fan will not get into. I think King was at a book signing giving a talk once and he asked everyone to stand up who had read at least one of his books. Naturally, everyone stood. Then he asked how many had read one or more of the Dark Tower series and literally half the crowd sat down. So, it is not an easy series to get into at all.

The first book is incredibly hard to get through. You keep trying to figure out what is going on, where this is taking place and what the hell is going to happen.....it took me about 3 or 4 times before I finally got through it. Then I moved on the second book and it just flew. After that each one just flew by.

It's a crazy, wild story and pretty freaky at times. I mean, there is some weird shit in there. I would highly recommend it, but you have to have some patience and a very open mind to approach it.
