You will most definitely love it. I was floored by just how good the Seattle scene really was and shocked that so much of it went under the radar even after Nirvana broke.

There is one band in there called Girl Trouble that is just incredible. Think a grungy Ramones sound with the Big Bopper (1950s vocalist) singing. In-friggin-credible sounding!!!

The movie is really heartbreaking too...it was made by a documentary crew that headed for Seattle about 1992 just as Nirvana was getting big and they basically stayed in Seattle for 4 whole years interviewing and piecing together the whole scene. They were right there when the memorial for Cobain happened and all.

I feel sorry for kids today as I think the current music doesn't stand a chance to rock circa 1991-1995. All those bands were one thing that you could feel in their music: honest.
May have been a little dark and depressing, but they didn't sugarcoat anything. Methinks that's why most people didn't get into it.

Do yourself a favor and pick up their first album Bleach and then their rarities album, Incesticide. Pure amazing!!!

Grunge was great, great music. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots....the list is endless.

Do yourself another favor and see the documentary, Hype! and get the soundtrack. It tells the story of the Seattle music scene in the 80s and the early 90s that gave birth to Nirvana and tons of other great bands. The soundtrack has a ton of bands you have never heard of before and probably never would have either, and they all rock it hard!!!

Speaking specifically to sound work, an experimental short I did with a friend last year heavily relied on the sound we created for it and we have to creatively use it. The end result was very cool and extremely satisfying to the both of us, but you have no idea how much of a pain in the ass it was to do in the first place.

Cable, if you need it proven to you that making a movie is something usually as frustrating as it is fun, I would challenge you to make a Star Wars fanfilm. It would involve a fair amount of initial effort to shoot and a fair amount of post-production sound work. If you do that and come back here saying you felt no frustration, I think we'd all shut up.

Ooooooo......a challenge?!?!?!?

I have done some research into the matter of making a Star Wars fan film, so I do have a general idea of what it takes to do a film short like that. To be perfectly honest, with all the current technology, it sounds easier than making cake to me. Just takes a lot of time and a lot of effort, I know.

My only problem is I can't come up with an idea that hasn't really been done already. And the only idea I have that I would really like to do involves the subject matter on this site: the OOT on DVD issue. And I know it would infuriate everyone except people here. Involves portraying Lucas as a Howard Hughes type, showcasing all his mental issues and how it all ties in to the tinkering with Star Wars. I'm incredibly sarcastic and profane, so it would be a riot, but it would piss many, many people off.

And that wouldn't take any special effects (maybe a little, but not a lot). I have no idea how to do special effects. I mean totally clueless I am!!!

Damn you!!! Now you got me thinking seriously about this!!! It was just a passing thought before!!!!

Actually, I've scared people off with my effort in creative things. I wanted to form a band way back (cuz I play guitar) and there was guy who wanted to do the same and when we got to talking about being in a band, I scared the shit out of him cuz I was VERY serious about it. Almost obsessive cuz my attitude with him was "When we form a band, we WILL make it. We WILL become rock stars. We WILL do it or we WILL DIE trying. He said I went all Capt. Ahab on him and he got freaked out.

Well said.

I know it must seem really cool and such to be able to work on Star Wars, but when all is said and done, it's a job. You're not there to horse around and discuss who was the better bounty hunter or what really creates the force or random crap like that. You work your ass off, and let me tell you, movie-making is a hard job. Which is why I'm only doing it for fun.

Like Lucas or any other filmaker doesn't consider what they do fun.....

Making movies has got to be so much fun that it can't possibly be thought of as work. Besides if it's fun and you get off on doing, then it really isn't work, is it?

There are definetely fun parts of movie making (I mean, it's not a necessary thing... why would people do it if it wasn't fun?). I loved putting movies up on the screen and seeing people enjoying them. My Econ teacher actually used some of my class project videos to show to his other students to help them learn better. That just makes me feel awesome inside.

But, I really don't know how else I can tell you in a way you'd understand. It's a business for these guys. They have serious work to do, and if work isn't turned in on time, you can bet there will be hell to pay.

And just out of curiousity, how old you are? Not to say you're stupid, because you're not, but I think all you need is some experience in what it really takes to make a movie.

Don't see what my age has to do with this.....but I'm 29. And I work a shit job....so doing something like a movie would be the shiznits for me. The experience of working a shit job has obviously something to do with why I would think it's an awesome thing to make a movie.

So, I take it you are a student (film or otherwise) and haven't worked a job that you have to so you eat and make ends meet, right? Working for a living and supporting my ass has most definitely altered my view of what makes a job fun.

Just my opinions, of course....

Alternate To The Digital Bits ???
Time
Hey there everyone!!!

I love my DVDs and keep up on all the release dates and such.

I usually go to the Digital Bits, but that dude who runs it always seems to miss a few titles quite a bit. Is there a better site?

I live in the US, so I'm interested in Region 1 releases.

I also don't like that dude's ass kissing. His recent visit to Skywalker Ranch and then his glowing review of the ROTS DVD made me want to puke!!!

NOOOOOOOO!!! Electrodes, please!!!
Time
God, I was thinking about that damn NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! scene in ROTS and I cringe even though I'm not watching it.

I seriously wish someone would hook up some electrodes to my brain and short out my memory so I can never think about that scene or any of those prequels again.

Does anyone else feel that way? Like you wish you never saw any of the prequels? Do you long for the heady days when Star Wars was just 3 movies that were the end-all-be-all of moviegoing bliss? I do. I want my original trilogy back.

Just venting....

You're the dude who makes the sound effects on the Star Wars films. How can that be frustrating, I have no idea...

So, something doesn't sound exactly right here....

Have you ever made a movie before? It's very frusterating. Try doing lightsaber effects... after a while of rotoscoping you wan't to kill yourself.

As for the article, this Roffman guy sounds like he's full of it. Another Yes-men...

Sorry, never made a movie before, but I don't think it's frustrating. It's hard work, yeah....and it can be challenging, but I don't think it would be frustrating. But since I don't make movies, I will ask if you do....if you don't, then maybe both of should pipe down cuz we both may not know what we are talking about.

Burtt didn't do any rotoscoping, dude. He came up with all kinds of wacky sounds from all kinds of wacky sources. Doesn't sound too stressful to me. I'd take the job.

I will reiterate....he's working on STAR WARS. Not some no-name sci-fi flick. I think Burtt was unsatisfied with something.......probably his boss. Burtt was with Lucas from the beginning. That would make Burtt less likely to be a yes-man since he knew Lucas when Lucas was a nobody with a few films under his belt.

Something sounds off....

Info & Help Wanted: for DVD Menu Info
Time

Hey there, everyone!!!

I’m getting started with DVD Lab Pro to author my set of the OT. I need some pointers.

Is there a template or something for how I should make the menu?

I’m just going to do a regular still menu that simply has PLAY and CHAPTERS, so I need to know if there is a specific size or whatever to make good looking DVD menus using DVD Lab Pro.

Absolutely any info on the whole process of making DVD menus would be greatly appreciated…

Hey there, everyone!!!

I've been gone from the boards for a while. Checked back in when I saw the news about the trilogy getting another release...yet again. Wanted to see the reactions to this (which have been what I've expected - for some great opinions, read the user reviews for the new set on amazon.com) and I keep running into this adamwankenobi character with BANNED underneath his name.

I've been looking around and seeing all the nonsense he's posted. Seriously, he posted the same opinion countless times..."I support the originals, but I also think it's Lucas's right to change them."

What did he do to get banned?

Printing out DVD Labels
Time
Hey there everyone!!!

I forgot about this thread totally!!!

After reading all your replies, I have to say that I'm reconsidering the laser printer I was planning on buying and I'm intrigued by the acrylic idea as well.
I started looking at the Epson R300 and I like it more and more, especially after reading opinions like MeBeJedi's and Rikter's, whose opinions I consider gold on these boards.

Just a few quick questions....

I have heard that inkjet printers tend to dry up and don't print well. I had a canon that did this and was why I switched to a black and white laser printer. Is there a problem with the inkjets drying up or not printing properly after not using them for a while?

Also, do inkjet printings look better depending on the paper you use? Like if you use the super nice glossy paper as opposed to plain white legal?

Whedon VS Lucas
Time
Hey there everyone!!!

I'm not trying to start a whole Firefly/Serenity thread here, but I came across this quote in an interview with Joss Whedon and I thought it was really great to share.

“It has always been my ambition to never have a director’s cut, that the best movie I can put out is the one I’m putting out,” says the filmmaker. “Even though I took things out, I did it for a reason. There’s an old saying amongst writers and directors: Kill your children. If it’s not working, pull them.”

The full interview can be found here: Link

I thought this statement from Joss was absolutely awesome. Finally we got someone who's got his head screwed on straight. Lucas needs to listen to this dude.

So, what do you guys think? Think Joss's movie is gonna kick the living shit out of Star Wars? Probably not, methinks, but I'm rooting for the guy. I want someone to come along and do something that leaves Lucas in the dust.

Ewan McGregor Interview In Playboy
Time
Another interesting part...

Playboy: Was it intimidating to take on such a prominent role in this legendary series?

McGregor: My uncle, who played a tiny role in the first movies as the pilot Wedge Antilles, warned me about it and advised me not to get involved.

Playboy: What was his objection?

McGregor: To this day he receives fan mail and gets asked to sign books written about him, all from having a small part in Star Wars. He finds the whole thing fucking ridiculous, so after his experience he was against it. He asked, "Would you like a career after you're 30?" The danger, I suppose, is that you get stuck in it and never get out. But I've managed not to.
