The Artistic Vision (TM Luca$hFilm)
Time
You know...I was thinking on this whole artistic vision thing a bit. I think it's total bullshit. I think the whole Star Wars franchise exists now simply to make money. I know...no surprise there, right? But look at how the other LFL stuff is handled.

The Indy movies are on DVD, but that's cuz Spielberg has a stake in them. I don't think the handling of the Indy movies is solely by LFL. Spielberg has some say, that's for sure. So we get them on DVD.

The Young Indy series is a different matter. It's been stated by McCallum that the series is finished, but they aren't releasing it until Indy 4 comes out. Why the hell are they doing that? When you finish work on a DVD release, it only makes sense to put it out there. Lucas never does that. There ALWAYS has to be some kind of BIG event tied with the release of a LFL product. It's like there's some kind of marketing strategy for the whole thing. Release something in the fall in preparation for something big in the Spring. This has happened a few times already with the Clone Wars, Episode 3, the SE DVDs and so forth, not to mention the video game they always push at the same time.
This is all carefully thought out to bring in maximum dollars.

Makes me think that Lucas just made the prequels simply to put the franchise in the spotlight again and now he's not going to let it go until he milks it for all it's worth. And I'm more likely to believe that the SEs exist so he can screw his ex-wife out of money.

I don't think this guy is an artist at all. He's just another motherfucker selling out to make a shitload of money. Not like he needed it though...or maybe he did. All those companies have to cost a lot to run.....

Sending the SEs back
Time
I would like to chime in here on the idea of donating the SE disks to wherever.

I'd rather shitcan the pieces of shit. I hate the SEs. Most people here do too. Why should we give them to some charity so people will watch them and then prefer those versions to the original?!?!?!

Screw that....don't send 'em back....don't donate them. Just throw the damn things out!!! Lucas wants to bury the OOT so everyone prefers the SEs, so I say we do the opposite. Bury the SEs, so everyone prefers the originals!!!

The hell with that donating crap....no way would I taint someone's mind with that SE garbage!!!

If anything, that was probaby an accident on his part (emulating great films).

This is so true when it comes to art. Artists try to emulate the stuff that has influenced them and somewhere along the way, it takes on a life of its own and becomes special in some way. This is exactly what happened to Star Wars. The unbelieveable part is Lucas trying to backtrack on it with ROTJ. It's like he was deliberately sabotaging his own work by "kiddifying" it or something.

Most artists would DIE to be in Lucas' shoes back in the 70s. They would have loved to create something that unique and special, but Lucas just pisses on it. Really sad actually. After seeing the PT and what he's done to the OT, Star Wars simply represents to me one big missed opportunity. It could have taken its place right up there with Lord Of The Rings as one of the great fictional pieces of all time and Lucas could have been right up there with Tolkien, but that's not the case anymore.

In time, all Lucas will be remembered for is his technical contributions to the film industry and the constant tinkering with Star Wars will eventually negate any achievements he's made as a storyteller.

Selectable crawl on new DVD? Or just the old one?
Time
Let me get this straight...

The crawl on Star Wars is a re-created original theater version one?

Or is it the usual Episode 4: A New Hope crawl?

If it's a copy of the LDs, then shouldn't it have the ANH crawl?

I'm distressed now that I wonder about this....I want the ANH crawl....that's how I've always watched it. I was born in '76, so I missed SW originally. Caught it on bootleg tapes in '81, so I've always remember the ANH crawl.

Sending the SEs back

Actually, you really don't need to send back very many to get people in LFL talking.

Someone in the mailroom gets the package and opens it, tells their supervisor and shows their co-workers. Everyone gets a laugh about it, but they tell anyone else they know at the company what happened in the mailroom. That kind of thing would spread around the workplace after a while and someone in a higher position will eventually hear it.

So the point wouldn't be lost, even if just a few were sent. You would get people in LFL talking about it. That would be enough for me. Of course, the more packages, the bigger the deal the people in the mailroom would make it out to be.

Sending the SEs back
Time
I know this has been talked about in a few other threads. Anyone seriously planning on doing this? I've checked some other threads that mentioned it and I didn't see an address. I could have missed it though.

Anyone have a definite address for LFL? I checked the website and just found a PO box address where they accept resumes to work there. Don't know if that will do.

I would very much like to do this. I don't want the SEs in my sight at all. I would like to send them back as a bit of a statement. I know people will rip me for this, but I will scratch the disks. I don't see it as immature or stupid. I think it sends a message that I don't want to see these versions and that they are basically wrong in principle.

If I can get an address, I'll be sending them back. It would be a nice little message to George and then I'll check out of SW forever.

You all may attack me now....promise I'll be a good sport about it.

2006 OT DVD: Poll: So What are You Going to Do?
Time
I voted to wait until the reviews are in...but it will take some very major problem to get me to not buy them. I just want them to do my own preservation project for myself. I want to get them and get that over with. I'm sick of this issue. I'm sick of Star Wars. I'm sick of George Lucas.

I just want to OOT in any condition at this point and I will be happy. After that, I'm jumping ship totally on SW. It used to be fun and it isn't anymore.

Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars...
Time
^Here, here!!!

That was exactly what I was thinking when Lucas said he wanted to "update" the OT. I figured we'd get three movies that were still the same, but with updated SFX shots that fit right into the movie in terms of time and in terms of keeping with the sound and music tracks. That way we'd get three almost brand new movies, but they would still be the same. I figured Lucas would digitally restore the OT, then do this awesome magic and then then do the prequels from there. That way, all the movies would have basically fit together in SFX looks.

Lucas dropped the ball big time on an opportunity to re-insert himself into the movie world with those special editions. Instead, he hacked the movies up, made them look like shit and alienated a lot of fans in the process. Well....the man's crazy, so what do you expect.

As for Trek...the SFX from that mirror episode of Enterprise were awesome. The original series starship in that one looked majestic, I swear. I'm open to updating the SFX, but just the SFX....leave the actor's footage alone....just do the spaceship shots. But, as I said....I'm open to it. I can't say I'll like it. Personally, I say leave it the hell alone...but I wouldn't mind seeing it either. I say do one episode and then do a special broadcast of it. Then see what the reaction is.

Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars...
Time

You know, I could talk about the sheer idiocy of Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, or how the latter ST series have radically changed in tone from the original series, but I'll just say "apples and oranges".

Please dude...dont' turn the thread into a knockfest on the quality of Trek in its various forms. The post was about the fact that original Trek is getting the SE treatment, but the original versions are available. While with Star Wars, we just have the "enhanced" version and that's it. We're finally getting the OOT, but in less than stellar quality.

I'll wager that these SEs of original Trek will probably look pretty good and won't have any added scenes that change the feel of the show or alter the audience's perception of any of the characters. They'll do to Trek what Lucas should have done to SW...simply clean up some SFX, change others and improve them by updating them and making both versions available, not ripping the hell out of them and not making the originals available.

I just find it funny how both are getting "updated" while the originals of one are getting treated well and the other is getting treated like shit. Even funnier is that the one getting treated like shit has its creator alive while the other is dead.

Check out this story at The Digital Bits...

Linky

It turns out that CBS Video, as part of their high-definition remastering of The Original Series, IS giving a lot of the special effects shots a new CG face-lift! Specifically, they're re-doing all of the spaceship shots. This to me is a very exciting idea... in principle. As anyone who saw the Mirror Universe episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise will tell you, the old TOS ships look awfully damn good in new CG. The replicated TOS sets, the original ship designs... rather than looking dated, they actually hold up VERY well by today's standards. Re-doing the effects will give new life to The Original Series and could help it appeal to a new, younger generation of fans. Unlike, say... the Star Wars films... the original versions of these episodes will always be preserved in GREAT remastered quality on DVD. And it would be extremely cool if CBS would release BOTH versions of the episodes on HD-DVD/Blu-ray, such that you can choose which version you wish to watch... the original or the new enhanced version.

There you have it....the original Star Trek series is going to get an SFX overhaul AND the original versions WILL be preserved for all ages on HD.

This is kinda funny when you consider that the creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, has been dead for 15 years and his creation is still being treated with some dignity. Lucas is alive and well and he won't treat with respect, the creation that made him what he is today.

Star Wars: 30th Anniversary (2007 - New Box-set)
Time
I'll be surprised if there isn't some kind of stink raised about him changing things with every release.

I mean....yeah, it is Star Wars and people love it, but come on.....this is just rip, gouging and tearing the wallets of people. Is the Star Wars Saga EVER going to be completed?
Are we ever going to hear from George Lucas that he's completely done with the movies and is happy with them?

I don't think so........this guy has got some serious mental issues if he keeps changing things and then expects people to keep buying them. No way would I waste hard earned money on some dude's OCD bullshit. The continued tinkering is the result of someone who is never satisfied and can't make up his mind. I'm not supporting that.

There will be more changes to the films

For crying out loud.....when is this bullshit going to end?

I seriously doubt that the OOT will be in this set. I think we're getting the 9/12 release for two reasons....one is curb the bootlegs and the other reason is so he doesn't have to release them ever again. I think that's why it's a limited release only. Lucas is doing it to get them out there, so he can say they're out there and we should leave him alone.

I wasn't going to buy the 9/12 release, but I'm going to now cuz I don't think we're ever going to see the OOT again. This is it and we mind as well not miss it.

I don't have time to translate the whole review, but they talk mainly about the poor video quality with compression problems, spots and grainy picture. 5/10

Let's hope the American press shits on these DVDs in their reviews too. LFL deserves some serious bad press for this.

Hopefully, some intrepid reviewer out there will give a simple two word review: Shit Sandwich.

"The fans are strange, but in a delightfully damaged way."

Okay Ricky......but this fan will continue to be delightfully damaged by not spending ONE FUCKING CENT ON ANY STAR WARS PRODUCT WHATSOVER!!!

Hopefully that will eventually damage both your wallet and your asshole boss's as well.....in a delightful way, of course.

Asshole.

That comment is totally rubbing our faces in shit, people. I'm not buying anything in September. Star Wars lives for me....on bootlegs only. Fuck giving these ungrateful, insulting bastards any money. They fuck with film history and then wonder why we act upset when we don't go along with it. I got one thing to say about this:

BULL-FUCKING-SHIT!!!!

POLL: Quality Of The Star Wars Products
Time
I voted yes.

For two reasons that spring to mind.....the first is, of course, the OOT release this fall. Enough has been said about that already. The second is about Star Wars Galaxies. For those who don't know, that was a MMORPG video game, sort of like Elfquest. The game had high hopes, but did nothing but disappoint. It also ended up being a total ripoff and betrayed any players who invested a lot of time in the game. The game was run by Sony Online, but LucasArts still had to have some say in how the game was handled. That game was such a waste of time.

For the whole sorry history, check it out at Wikipedia and go towards the bottom.
