Here's my stance

So, what's your point?

You're not telling anythng we don't already know...

I don't give a shit what Lucas does with SW now....I'm not dropping any dead presidents on it, so fuck it all. Our gripe is preserving the OOT, that's all.

I've argued the prequels and SE changes cuz we can, but no one here is disputing Lucas' right to do what he wants with it. WE just question his decisions and his motives. So fucking what?

If you don't like reading about all this, you more than welcome to piss off...take Gomer with you too.

What you're talking about is having low standards for the quality of a film.

This interests me quite a bit....why do a lot of people accept low standards for films these days? Movies that made it to the theater were usually pretty damn good. Sure, there were some stinkers every now and then....but I can't readily name movies from today that compare to the great films of the 60s and 70s or even from before. Nearly EVERYTHING that comes out in the theater is utter shit....even the movies that honestly should be good aren't that great.

When did low quality become so accepted? Probably when Jerry Springer became popular and it was okay for a President to lie to a grand jury and not be accountable for it. Shit is so ass backwards nowadays.

Stuff like Firefly get cancelled, but garbage like Dukes Of Hazzard gets made....go figure. Too many people accept low quality, so that's what they're going to get.

With all apologies to Gomer, but most of us here grew up in a more exciting time when films were made by filmmakers who loved making quality films. Sorry if we don't blindly accept the shit that's handed to us. Pardon the fuck outta us for expecting something more....

Nanner is right here.....not sure I'd want to be a fan of such hokey crap.

gave the fans what they wanted.

I don't think it was ever about what the fans wanted back then. Lucas and Spielberg were out to impress themselves and make movies that would knock them out as filmgoers. I contend that the fans haven't changed, Lucas has. I didn't have outlandish expectations when I sat in the midnight show of TPM back in '99. I remember thinking that this is going to be different, yet familiar. Other than that, I really had no expectations and I still don't like TPM. Lucas changed...we didn't. We just wanted a STAR WARS movie....and whatever comes with a STAR WARS movie. Those prequels were not STAR WARS movies.

Lucas is older, jaded, unchallenged, obtuse and most of all...comfortable. The rest of us are still the wide-eyed, imaginative and impressionable kids and young people we were back in the glory days, who seek the same thrill, that's all. An ambitious and imaginative storyteller could have satiated our desire for a STAR WARS movie. Lucas is not such a storyteller anymore.

If I may be so bold as to make a comparison here....the OT is like Jaws and the PT is like Jaws: The Revenge. Anyone else agree with this?

But he loves his fans.

Gomer.....if Lucas came to a sudden halt, your face would go halfway up his ass.

I'd like to add something quick...

This whole business with the state of SW is so damn sad, it's not funny. Who would have thought something that that affected so many people in such a positive way would end up like this.

I know it's just a movie when you get down to it, but there's no difference between a SW fan and a Green Bay Packers fan who paints his face green and stands in the cold all day Sunday. Sure, the Packers might win and they might lose, but they come back each year to try again.

SW has degraded into this sad piece of shit that no one really cares about anymore. I thought it would be like the Lord Of The Rings novels. It would be this revered piece of fiction that would captivate audiences for decades or centuries....

....well...at least half of it will.

Actually, I have to agree with TheCassidy somewhat here. Lucas definitely doesn't care anymore. He serves the almighty dollar, plain and simple, but I don't think he has the right to overlook the fanbase that put him where he is. I don't have a problem with the schmuck making money....hell, I would too in his position....but there's a right and wrong way to do it. There's no reason whatsoever why all fans can't be happy. That can simply be done by treating the OOT with dignity and respect.

As for the noble cause...I don't think we killed it at all. Lucas killed it by releasing the OOT. The argument now is over a quality presentation. I entertain the opinion that Lucas released the OOT the way he did on purpose. He put it out to shut everyone up about getting them. At the same time, the low quality would spark another argument which would only make all of us look bad. Effectively, he shut us up and made us all look like wack-jobs at the same time. We got our OOT and we're still not happy....that's what's being said. And that's what's being used to dismiss us.

I know I've accomplished nothing except making myself feel a little better. I absolutely agree with that one. I've made it clear which version I prefer, that's all. The battle is over anyway. The cause was not won, it was only a partial victory for us. We got the OOT which means Lucas conceded a little and I won't spend one penny on ANYTHING Star Wars that Lucas puts out. He's lost this fan forever. I just wanted to show it somehow...

As some of you recall, I was faced with a major dilemma on 9/12 in regards to the Limited Edition release of the SW Trilogy. I, like many of you, think Lucas is an ass for relegating the OOT as bonus disks and for not giving them the royal treatment. All that aside, I'd like to share something with you...

On 9/12, I bought three of the trilogy sets from Best Buy. These were the sets that had the three movies in the "fairly okay, but nothing spectacular" looking tin. I bought one for myself which I did not open right away. The other two were for my sister and her brother in law. She gave me the money for both sets and she let me open hers so I could take a look at it in order for me to determine whether or not I wanted to keep the set. At first, I was not impressed and gave my sister's set to her and was going to return my unopened set for a full refund. My sister, on the other hand, loved the set, but hated the tin. It wouldn't fit properly on her shelf, so she didn't want it.

I got an idea.

I gave my sister $10 for just the tin. Then I went home and started two auctions on eBay for the tin from my sister and the tin from my still unopened set. Amazingly, both tins went for $35 a piece. After shipping and all, I had $70. I only paid $60 for the set at Best Buy, so I got all my money back. I got the $60 that I paid for the set at Best Buy and the $10 that I gave my sister for her tin. Essentially, I used Lucas' marketing gimmick with the tins against him and got all three movies for free. No money came out of my pocket at all. Pretty cool, huh?

So now....I'd like to share with you what I did with this set that I paid ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for...

This is what Lucas released...
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return Of The Jedi

This is what I wanted...
OOT Bonus Disks

Oh! I got three free DVD cases too.
Cases

This is what I did with the rest...
Here's my opinion of your ego trip special editions, Georgie...
A close up...
Another close up...
Yet another close up...

Let's give a round of applause for...
Our hero!!!

I guess it all came out in the end. Thanks for giving me what I wanted George...I don't need the rest.

Remember when...

I thought it was fairly obvious that I was doing a "Remember when..." segment here where everyone added their own little "Remember when..." statement. Didn't think I needed to clarify that...

I didn't ask for comments but will gladly accept them.....but at least contribute to the original idea of the fuckin' thread please....

The Space Program

I agree we shouldn't wait until everything is a-okay down here....I'm just saying that we have our priorities a little messed up here.

Famine and poverty are still major issues in the world that should be dealt with first before serious effort can be thrown into space travel. We have a space station, but still have homeless people walking the streets of America. That's kinda ass backwards....
