I found it hard to take seriously at all.

Yep.

Honestly wouldn't have taken a lot of effort to turn it into a full blown comedy.

The best part about Forrest Gump was the "Run florist, run!" spoof in the film Mofia (which was mostly a very unfunny film).

Its not like "God" came out of nowhere on BSG. A lot of the series and ALL of Caprica were about poly- vs. mono- theism. A "God did it" ending is what the series was always leading up to, we were just too dense to realize it.

Characters discussing theology and talking about their beliefs is a long ways off from a "A wizard God did it!" conclusion. I don't think that makes us dense nor does it make the ending any better or confirm that a "God did it" ending was in store for us all along. Caprica came after BSG, so I can easily see them following that theme now that it has been established.

I think we simply have a trend of writers digging holes way to deep in the interest of intrigue and mystery, then when it comes time to explain these mysteries they have to scratch their heads for a bit while they come up with the sturdiest ladder they can think up to allow themselves to climb out and make a quick get away.

I really liked the ambiguous ending to LOM. I found it satisfying while still leaving things open for the viewer to take it however they like. I've heard spoilers for AtA that seem like it spells out pretty definitively what is going on, I was hoping they'd still try to leave it at least a little mysterious.

Seems like we have too many decent sci-fi shows that try to explain all the weird things that happened in them (Lost and BSG, being two other recent examples) and ultimately it just takes away the magic and makes a definitive ending a lot of people aren't satisfied with. Lost could have benefited from leaving things a bit more ambiguous, and BSG really had no reason to sink into the supernatural realm at all (it was never that kind of show, the addition of it was not that intriguing, and it ended up really making it jump the shark that last season. If you're really that short on ideas, maybe it was time to end the show a season sooner).

Though I really don't think anything could be more rubbish than the ending to the American's LOM. Makes me shudder just thinking about it. Its ending was so bad, it made Lost's finale look perfect. The "Ah, phew, it was all just a bad dream" ending is about the cheapest cop out you can get. Then making him an astronaut on a flight to mars was even more lame and took away the meaning of the title by making it literal. Oops, I guess those were spoilers. If it stops just one person who reads this from suffering through the show, then I feel I have done a good deed.

It does!?!? I'll have to check this show out...

If you haven't seen the video for "Ashes to Ashes", here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMThz7eQ6K0

I've seen the video before. The clown from the video plays a major(ish) role in the TV show (though he's not played by Bowie, of course).

I kind of think you might like both shows, actually. Maybe you should check them out. Ashes to Ashes is the sequel to Life on Mars, so make sure you check out LOM first. And when looking for Life on Mars, be sure to keep a safe distance away from the American remake, it has been known to cause cancer in laboratory rats and could be hazardous to your health.

Tee hee. Yes.

But Moon is good.

Gump is one of those movies I've always gotten the impression that people only say it is good because it is suppose to be good. Like disliking it could only mean you have poor taste or are trying to be a contrarian. Saying Forrest Gump sucks and really meaning it (as opposed to looking for a reaction) seems to be considered semi-blasphemous to a large part of the population. Seems like every time I have expressed dislike for it I have been met with wide eyes and disbelief. If it was really a good movie that people just generally had a tendency to thoroughly enjoy, I don't think the reactions to someone disliking it would be so incredulous.

As good as any film may be, there is always something to dislike about it. If someone believes a movie is so good that it surprises them to hear that anyone could dislike it, then they are clearly viewing it through the state of mind that it is untouchable. I think films like Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, and Casablanca suffer from this sort of thing too. While I'd agree that at least two out of those three films are really good, everybody knows that they are all fantastically brilliant films, and even if they sleep through them, they'll be prone to tell you that they thought they were great, because they already "know" they are great before they even watch them (and who are they to disagree).

At least Predators made up for all the bad predator films after the first one.

Wait, what? My fellow cynical hates-everything forum member liked Predators?

I really wanted to like it (like Skyjedi, I hate almost everything. I am just not as vocal about it. But not ever really enjoying anything new gets old), I really, really did. So much so that I was just going to let go and ignore the small things and really appreciate it for what it was. And I did, I really did for slightly more than the first half of the film. And then it just kind of went from intriguing to predictable and bland. Then there was Adrian Brody trying to be an over the top badass (which was really ramped up toward the end of the film) and it got to me (I have a hard time not finding over the top badasses groan worthy). I left the theater feeling like the whole thing had been a really shallow experience.

I also really wanted to like Terminator Salvation, but it just wouldn't let me (the bastard).

But this, a new sci-fi film directed by Ridley Scott? The man who brought me Blade Runner and Alien; two of the best sci-fi films I have seen in my life AND he has decided not to make another dumb prequel/sequel of a formerly extremely popular film but rather something original? I need to go change my pants so I can pee myself with excitement a second time!

Alien and Blade Runner were amazing because there really wasn't anything else out there quite like them. I am not sure he'll be able to do that again, but I am sure excited about seeing him try.

I'm going to say I like "Ashes to Ashes" more than "Life on Mars".

I mean, "Life on Mars" is great, but "Ashes to Ashes" has more meaning behind it.

Wait, we're talking about Bowie songs, right? :p

Actually... yeah, we are. I've always liked Bowie's Life on Mars, and never really cared much for Ashes to Ashes. But now that the TV show Ashes to Ashes frequently plays the song throughout I find it growing on me... and stuck in my head. Been humming it all day in fact.

I played Assassin's Creed for about 30 minutes (on the 360) and gave up on it. Multiple friends of mine kept telling me to try Assassin's Creed II and when I'd tell them how much I disliked the first one, they'd reassure me that it had been vastly improved. And it has. I've actually really enjoyed playing Assassin's Creed II, it still has some really annoying controls at times, but for the most part you can make your character do what you want.

The only real control complaint I have had is how easy it is to do a wall kick off of a building you are climbing up. It is a pain to be half way up a really tall tower, and then instead of leaping to grab onto a window seal you end up making your character do a wall kick making him turn 180 degrees and plummet into nothing. Not only do you have to start all over on your potentially time consuming climb, but I've died from this a few times as well causing it to waste even more of my time.

I know it is probably an operator problem, but this far into the game it is still giving me fits. No other complaints control wise though, fighting guards and assassinating people is actually a lot of fun.

Now I just have to get that carpal tunnel surgery so I can enjoy games again.

That's why you are only a level 20 some on Black Ops (with a damn near perfect KDR!), if you get that taken care of maybe we can play together. It is hard to find good people to play with. I have a really good group, but they are all in much more demanding careers than I am so it is hard for them to find time to play.

"Ashes to Ashes" had much more of a feminine twist to the style of the writing music, situations, and production design.  For this reason, I personally did not enjoy it as much as "Life on Mars". Hunt also became much more of a cardboard cut out of a character as the show went on.

But still, very good shows.

Agreed completely. Feels like a bit of a shadow of Life on Mars, but Life on Mars was so good, even its shadow is pretty enjoyable.

As for the feminine twists, they don't bother me too much. I think I am immune. I work in a female dominated profession and spend most of my free time with my girlfriend. I am used to the estrogen overload. Wow, now that I think about it, I really miss having obnoxious male room mates who run around the apartment with their dicks hanging out for kicks.

Finally getting around to watching Ashes to Ashes. I loved Life on Mars and wasn't sure about this at first, but now that I am a ways into it (just started series two) I am enjoying it for what it is.

After spending the first portion of this year working my way through Doctor Who and Torchwood, it is surprisingly refreshing to be watching a show that was made for adults (and not in a juvenile bi-sexual obsessed Russell T. Davis kind of way).

Lame. Poor girl.

What I think you think what happened is vastly different from what I know happened.

Actually, what you think I think happened (I think) is not what I think happened. The Coke bottle from my initial response was my best guess, but I am still assuming it was not what I think you want us to think. I think.

Still, if you twist anything for a guy, he ought to return the favor by lifting something heavy or fitting large objects into tight holes or something for you at least.

I like the shadow default avatar though, so no change. Besides if I were to change it I'de change it to a Chuck avatar.

Aww, come on! You need to lose the shadow avatar. Makes you look like a noob. Join the ranks of the regular posters where you belong and give yourself a face. One of us! One of us! One of us! One of us!

Now that I think about it, I am actually kind of shocked you don't have a Chuck avatar already. You love Chuck (I think). So that must mean you really love your default shadow figure avatar.

I am not even sure I could list 400 movies off the top of my head, and I know I couldn't list 2,000.

I have to say I'm not sure if Bungie will fare better without Halo than Halo will without Bungie.

Well said.

From all that has been revealed about Halo 4 so far, it does sound like they do intend to take it in a whole new direction, which is what it needs. Not only was the gameplay nearly the same throughout the series, but the story continually rehashed itself too. Another Halo, Guilty Spark is back, oh no! Here comes the flood, run! I think that is part of the reason I love ODST so much, it was Halo, but it felt fresh and different.

To this day H2 and ODST are still my favorites, and I think that is because those were the two that did the best job of being a different experience. While Halo 2 rehashed a lot of Halo:CE, there was the whole Arbiter campaign going on alongside the Master Chief campaign, which I thought was fantastic. Three felt like an enhanced version of H1 mixed with a striped down version of H2. Reach felt like Halo 3 plus a few extras with a storyline and characters I couldn't force myself to care a thing about.
