Up really depressed me. I have this irrational fear of old people (no, really, I do) and that movie was just a little bit too much for me. Old folks' homes literally terrify me, and have the ability to put me in a really melancholy mood for weeks. Up was like going to an old folks' home, listening to an old guy tell you his life story with tears in his eyes while yelling at a little kid, then following that up by watching a crappy adventure cartoon where the main character's hero he had always looked up to turns out to be a disappointingly mean murderous asshole and tries to kill him.

It is the "touching" story of dreams being shattered wrapped in a shiny fun looking children's cartoon.

If I were Zigfried, this would be the part where I'd talk about suing Pixar to pay for my psychological counseling.

Luck had everything to do with it.

Saying something is lucky is not the same as saying it's crap.

If he hadn't been in a number of places at the right time it just wouldn't have happened.

By that reasoning, everything in life is purely luck. Everything is about being in the right place at the right time. It is lucky the dealer had the car you bought, lucky Best Buy had your computer in stock, lucky you happened to look at job postings when the job you now have was posted. By this definition of luck, the only things that wouldn't be considered luck would be things you personally deem as negative in your life. I think in this way, the word luck quickly loses its meaning, though I very much think it is an extremely meaningless word in the first place.

I was just saying that I think saying he got "lucky with it" belittles how very well done the show was. Great care, effort, and talent were poured into it and it shows. When a guy like Moffat continuously hits the nail on the head, I don't think you can call it luck (yeah, he has made some failures), but he's obviously worked hard to get the reputation he has and has some great talent.

BEAUTIFUL WOMEN NEW RULES IN FIRST POST (NSFW) UPDATED RULES

I actually find clothing very sexy. I mean, I like skin as much as the next guy, but when you are assaulted with curves and sexual imagery all the time, a cute outfit tasteful outfit not so revealing outfit is suddenly a huge turn on.

Along with Ferris I really should have been born in a different era... That outfit Hepburn is wearing at the top of this page is incredibly hot.

Fine, 005 and Fink convinced me, I think I will watch South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut tonight for the first time since it was in theaters (1999, it has been over ten years since I have seen it; that is crazy to think about).

Re: Cartman's voice. I read that originally Trey did the Cartman voice on his own, but now he does a different voice and they change the pitch electronically to make it sound like the original Cartman voice. This was probably because it takes a lot of effort to do that sort of voice and probably gets painful after a while.

I really don't have a problem with that, I think the "new" Cartman voice resembles the old one enough and is still funny, or at least as funny as a voice can still be after fifteen years of hearing it. Although that scene with him yelling at the cat did have me in tears just now.

One of the writers, Matthew Graham, of 'Life on Mars' and 'Ashes to Ashes' semi-leaked that he was on the writing team of the forthcoming SW tv show:

If the show turns out to be about one of Luke's Jedi Academy's Jedi Knights being in an accident and waking up many years prior to the events of The Phantom Menace and while trying to figure out what happened to him also has to learn to cope with his new primitive environment, an asshole Jedi Council, a green pointy eared muppet who has no logical sentence syntax for a boss, ridiculous statements like only Siths dealing in absolutes (which he would try in vain to explain was an absolute itself), and rules that make no sense like there only ever being able to be 2 Sith at once, or that green and blue (and on rare occasions purple or yellow) mean good and red always means bad; then I would TOTALLY watch this show!

Basically a pre 1999 EU era character cast into the craziness that has become the post 2010 PT era. Aw man, it would be brilliant! If anyone wants to animate or direct, I'll get right to work on the script.

I just read how Life on Mars (US) ended on io9's 10 Big Reveals That Made Stories Even More Confusing (SPOILERS FOR STUFF). Is that actually what happened? I would have been so pissed off.

Yeah, that was the ending. They were on a space mission to mars and while in cryosleep the crew's minds were fed a virtual world of their choice. The main character choose to be a cop in the 2006 (or whenever the show was on) and thanks to some computer bug things glitched out and it change the date to the 1970s mid program. Not only that, but the cops he works with in his glitched out cop fantasy are the other crew members of his space shuttle, the police chief he is constantly at odds with throughout the show turns out to be his dad and the antagonistic relationship they always shared was a result of daddy issues.

It kind of ended like the Wizard of Oz (it was just a dream, and you were there, and you were there, and you were there...), only the Wizard of Oz was cool and featured midgets and flying monkeys.

Not sure who thought the technological twist on the "it was all just a bad dream" cop out would be a good idea for an ending, but I do believe I heard that they had to rush to tie it up because it got cancelled.

@ Fink, you mentioned owning seasons 1-3 on DVD, those are by far my absolute least favorite seasons. When you get to the higher seasons you get a lot of really great stuff like the Scott Tennermen Must Die and the J-Lo eps. I'd definitely give those a try. Out of all the early episodes, the only ones I really enjoyed were the Stavin Marvin ones.

Interesting.  I love the early ones.  But there isn't a single episode that is worse than Forrest Gump.

I don't know, that Special ed. camp episode at the end of last season was pretty horrible. And anything with Towlie in it was pretty atrocious. I'd still rather rewatch one of those South Park episodes than have to watch Florist Gump, but only because they are shorter.

I actually really dislike the South Park movie too, but haven't seen it since it was in theaters back when I really disliked the show as well. Maybe I need to give it another chance.

Yeah, I am pretty confident if they let it go, even for a few years, it won't be the last we see of those characters.

I remember during the writer's strike a few years back they said even if the show is cancelled completely they have their website as a vehicle for distribution, and will continue to make episodes for as long as they want, no studio contract needed.

Definitely get the vibe "as long as they want" has come to an end, but their confidence in their own independent ability to continue the show displayed during the writer's strike gives me confidence that there is plenty more to come from these guys and that they will continue to be on the cutting edge of self distribution.

I think that Trey & Matt have lost their desire to do it. Perhaps tired of the political correctness, the censorship of Mohammed kind of kicked them in the balls and they don't seem  to have the same passion anymore.

It started plummeting in quality right after the Mohammad episode, which was definitely the peak in recent years. Up until that point they just kept getting better and better with an occasional dud.

Did you see the last episode Ferris? There is a scene where two of the characters are talking (about their relationship) and everything they say (the excitement is gone, same ol' thing every week, it just isn't fun anymore, etc.) gives you the distinct impression that it is Matt & Trey talking about the show.

I heard their contract with Comedy Central is up after this season. I kind of hope they keep the show going, but on their own time. Any time they get a good idea for an episode, they could make it and distribute it on their website. I think there are plenty of good ideas left in them, and in this way they are free from both obligation and censorship. Even if we only ended up with an episode or two a year, I think this would be a great way for them to continue the show without being obligated to spit out a mediocre episode when they don't have anything to say.

I plan on getting seasons 1-6, and I'll see if I want anymore after that.

Remember, every episode is available on southparkstudios.com. You could save the money and the space and check them out that way, then buy them after you've found out if you like them, if you are bent on having them in your collection. Another nice thing about the show is there is very little actual continuity to it, so you can pick up watching it almost anywhere.

Book reviews in one sentence or less!
Time

Review the latest book you read here! But be sure to keep it within one sentence. Feel free to review graphic novels, comic books, stories written on the web or on the back of cereal boxes as well!

Example:

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Really freakin' scary.

The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien

Please pass the weed.

Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher

Bathroom reading made into an art form; every commode ought to have a copy at arm's reach!

This is the guy who turned down writing for Spielberg (and more cash) to run Doctor Who and had a lucky hit with Sherlock.

A lucky hit? I cringe when people say that about things that are genuinely good. Luck had nothing to do with it, it was brilliant and amazingly well done and deserved all praise it got. From writing to casting. I couldn't imagine a better job being done of converting Sherlock Holmes to modern times. It did for Sherlock Holmes what Casino Royal did for James Bond. Now, if they can just managed to hold onto that for series two and not completely undo the good they've done (Quantum of Solace, I'm looking at you), I will be a very happy man.

So Who is telling the truth Moffat or the Beeb?

Doesn't matter if Sherlock is to blame or not, still only getting half a season of Doctor Who in 2012.

Though I've no reason not to trust Moffat, even if Sherlock was the cause of the half season, it stands to reason he'd say it wasn't as not to have fans of one his shows irritated at the existence of his other show.

It got past Season 4?  ;-)

...

Maybe I should give it a second chance on Netflix.  I don't know if I can get past Cartman's voice change, however.  They took one of the funniest and most recognizable voices ever, and made it 327% less funny. :-(

Back when it was popular and everyone loved it, I thought it was really lame. In those days it was rarely very intelligent and it seemed the goal was mostly to just shock you into laughing.

Then a few years ago I was channel surfing on one of those rare occasions that I found myself bored and alone in a room with cable TV and nothing else to do, and stumbled across the Imagination Land episode and couldn't help but think it was one of the greatest things I had ever seen. I mentioned how much I enjoyed Imagination Land to a friend and was given the names of several other really good episodes to watch (Something Wal-Mart This Way Comes being one of them).

The more episodes I saw the more I started to love it. Last season had so many good episodes in it, it was really disappointing to see the quality drop in the second half of that season. This season has had a couple of decent episodes, but for the most part its been a let down. The crack babies episode was the only episode I really enjoyed this season.

Randomly thinking about whether or not I should watch the last episode of Doctor Who, or save it until the next half of the season starts. I am not really one of those "OMG I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!1" kinds of people, but cliff hangers still bug me. Mostly because I lose interest in the story when I can only get part of it at a time.

Oh man! Now I am randomly thinking about South Park's mid season cliff hanger and wondering what the implications of it are. I got the impression we are going to have to say goodbye at the end of this season.

Video Games - a general discussion thread

Just watched that Star Trek trailer. Really good Star Trek game... Wait what? It looks like a regular crappy third person film tie in, I must have missed the news that makes us think this will be really good.

I guess the fact that they are working on it this far ahead (they have another year yet, right?) is somewhat promising. Any other reasons this is going to be good?
