Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

See, I didn't think the V8 looked that great at all...

 It doesn't look as good as the X9 screens he posted, but there's no rainbowing (though yours has very little), and there's slightly more detail, probably because there's no grain filters applied. Or did you not use a grain filter?

Not that I'm knocking your efforts ;) Just making an observation. Like I said, there's no chroma shift in yours, and I agree, it does look much better than the screens of the V1.

But I've never seen a LaserDisc in person to compare with, if that's what you mean.

That preview looks great Dark Jedi! I do hope your bonus set finds its way to the newsgroup one day in the future. :)

I am not sure yet if this one will.

 I do hope it hits torrents and/or JDownloader...THIS is the set I really want, and it almost looks as good as the V8 (but without the chroma shift).

Info Wanted: Pre-'93 Japanese Special Collection LD transfers?
Time

The Aluminum Falcon said:

...Asaki, have you checked out Moth3r's PAL laserdisc preservation?

 Yes, I've checked out the Reinventing the Wheel set before. It was nice before the GOUT came out, but as Lee recently pointed out, the PAL releases are very, very soft looking.

The Aluminum Falcon said:

Also, more non-DVNR releases of the original unaltered trilogy include the Star Wars widescreen bootleg that Moth3r found, the widescreen Catnap bootleg, the Puggo Grande, the Stjarnornas Krig, or any of the old Star Wars VHS releases (though these were in full screen).

 Most of those are only the first movie, for which I already have Arnie.d's excellent V8. I just wish he could've gotten the rest of the trilogy out there before moving on to the vaporware X9 project (though those captures from it did look very impressive...almost more detailed than the GOUT).

Going to check out Harmy's EpVI reconstruction soon though, hopefully that will tide me over for the time being.

This set is so screwed up but to my eyes it looks a lot better than the DC or Faces when it is in motion.

After seeing it for myself (EpIV at least), I agree 100%. All my life, I always thought it was just that blurry because it was such an old movie :| I have a much easier time ignoring the occasional black dots and the random glue bits (which wouldn't be that hard to edit out if anyone really wanted to).

I'm really curious to see how the other two movies look pre-THX, since everyone agrees that the first movie got the worst of it.

RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)
Time

Harmy said:

I must say I am quite disappointed with the quality, it seem that GKAR Jedi is even more plagued with DVNR smearing than the GOUT...

 Really?

I was wondering why everyone was trying to color correct the completely butchered 2004 footage instead of just using the G'KAR. Though I haven't seen it for myself...are the other two movies bad too? I was under the impression that Adywan's EpV reconstruction was G'KAR sourced, and I didn't notice any smearing.

Also, if anyone were to PM me a link to the DVD5 of this... ¬_¬

I found this one above....it's the Hologram box set....4 days left on it.

 Yeah, there are a few still up, but I was much more willing to pay the < $10 prices that they'd been going for up until a few days ago...

So I guess I either need to be more patient, or pull a Dr. Georgelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the GOUT.

Jetrell Fo said:

The one you're searching for, is it the VHS companion to the DC?

 Not that I'm aware of, it's pre-THX. I've read some who say that this VHS set, the Fox Special Widescreen LaserDiscs, and the Japanese Special Collection are all from the same master, but I've also read that they're not...so...Idunno.

G-Force's Stab / AVISynth help...
Time

I'm not going to lie, I know absolutely nothing about this AVISynth stuff. I thought I had this figured out, but it's just giving me an error:

"TemporalSoften: RGB24 Not Supported, use ConvertToRGB32()."

I don't know if the Stab script is outdated or what, I'm using AVISynth 2.5.

I'm trying to clean up this terrible wobble in The Brave Little Toaster...I tried using DeShake, but unless that are some magic settings I have to use, it doesn't improve the wobble that much in the stationary scenes, and adds too much in the panning shots.

Maybe I'm just doing it wrong...this is what my script looks like (obviously I just took the original and added the two lines on top):
##############################################################################
#Original script by g-force converted into a stand alone script by McCauley  #
#latest version from December 10, 2008                                       #
##############################################################################

AviSource("D:\Brave Little Toaster\merged2.avi")
Stab()

function Stab (clip clp, int "range", int "dxmax", int "dymax") {

range = default(range, 1)
dxmax = default(dxmax, 4)
dymax = default(dymax, 4)

temp  = clp.TemporalSoften(7,255,255,25,2)
inter = Interleave(temp.Repair(clp.TemporalSoften(1,255,255,25,2)),clp)
mdata = DePanEstimate(inter,range=range,trust=0,dxmax=dxmax,dymax=dymax)

DePan(inter,data=mdata,offset=-1)
SelectEvery(2,0) }
Info Wanted: Pre-'93 Japanese Special Collection LD transfers?
Time

So I’ve been trying to find good transfers of the Japanese “Special Collection” or Fox’s “Special Wide Screen Edition” LDs for a while now, but I’m not having much luck finding information on these…seems like almost all of the LD transfers out there are from the 93/95 THX remasters.

I found this thread on Dark_Jedi’s attempts to redo the JSCs, but apparently he cancelled them in light of Arnie.d’s X9 project…which hasn’t had an update since October '09 =/ The LaserDisc Revived project sounds very promising, but it also sounds like it’s going to be a bit of a wait for that one, and I was hoping there was something out already that I could watch within the next few weeks. I did find Arnie.d’s V8 and it looks excellent, but from what I can tell it’s only Episode IV.

Or should I just give up and buy the '92 “Special Letterbox Collector’s Edition” VHSes? I’d rather have something I can pop into the big screen and enjoy, but I keep seeing mint copies of these ending at 0 bids for dirt cheap…

Not directed at you, I just think it's important for viewers to be educated about framing and aspect ratios.

 Right.

I think it's sad that now that most of the world is 16:9(ish) widescreen, we're having the opposite problem =/ Not only are 4:3 and 1.66:1 videos getting cropped to 16:9, which has been going on for a while and is quite well known, but I've seen a few movies in 16:9 on TV and on Hulu that are supposed to be extra-wide letterbox aspect ratios >_<

... they are talking about how it is the probably the most poorly-transferred segment of the laserdisc master. It is blurry with color bleeding all over the place, whereas the original film was sharp like the other Mos Eisley scenes.

 Maybe it's just me, but I notice the "ghosting" throughout the entire film...though it is a lot more noticable in -those- scenes.

And do you have any proof that the director approved any fullscreen release?  (I haven't read through this entire thread, so I apologize if I missed something.)

 You should at the very least read post #1 in any thread ;)

There are two versions available on DVD, the MGM version which is widely commercially available, and the IRE version, whose transfer was commissioned by Godfrey Reggio for its pressing to DVD, several years before the MGM version was announced. ...

The IRE version was released as a very limited release directly from Godfrey Reggio a few years before the MGM version finally came out on DVD, at a time when it wasn't sure if a studio was ever going to release it on DVD. This release via Godfrey Reggio's website was very very limited though ... Consider this a preservation commissioned by Reggio when it didn't look like any other DVD release of the film was due to happen.
