Japanese Special Collection Star Wars Trilogy "Take 2"

I am in no way trying to steal the thunder from Arnie.d and this thread   http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/STAR-WARS-V8-A-Final-Attempt/topic/9467/
I have just been saying for a long time that I was going to re-do this and now I am,so any comments, tips, pointers, are more than welcome, this set has always been very cool just because the colors are so different than any of the rest of the versions I have, plus I never used filters,I did not make it anamorphic, and most of all,I did not IVTC it,now I am.

ANH raw capture, only cropping, resizing,IVTC,NO filtering, just so you can see what I am working with:

As you can see it needs some work, but this right now in my opinion looks better than my last JSC release (the Dark\Sega)
just keep in mind this has absolutely NO filters used at this time, and I may even come up with a better IVTC method, alot can change as it progresses, but rest assured it won't take "to" long, once I start a project I want to get it done and share.

a VIDEO_TS sample links will be added soon so you can see and hear it in motion,it is 420 MB's.

So give me a hnd with this and start throwing out the suggestions and comments.

ps. I will start deleting the sample pics as we move on,and also, once the video and audio are done,I would love it if someone wanted to take the DVD and make up some nice menu's,yes a joint venture(I hate doing menu's LOL)

Thanks

Not a bad starting point, you've got a good amount of detail going on.  There does seem to be a bit of edge enhancement (look at the grey tubes to the right of Threepio in shot 5), but I'm not sure if that's inherent in the transfer or not.

There's a lot of cyan/magenta video noise going on, as well - hopefully that can be dealt with using filters later in the process.

You might be trumped by arnie.d's new project (Special Collection transferred using an X9 player, which is just a slight step down from the grandaddy of them all, the X0), but there's always room for multiple transfers out there.

And I'd be willing to do the DVD authoring (menus) aspect of it - I have Adobe Encore CS4.

Good I will take you up on that then.

I thought he was using the V8, hence the name of the project. Or is there another...

He announced recently that he's gotten access to an X9, so he's going to use that.

It's nice to see you're using the Special Collection. It's without a doubt my favorite OT LD set. I like you don't use filters. I'm always tempted to do so but they ALWAYS have negative side effects.

What capture device did you use for this transfer?

The rainbowing is a bitch. It's in my V800 capture and also in the X9 capture. It bugs the hell out of me. But I think it's partly (mostly?) on the LD itself because other discs (newer) played on the X9 don't show nearly as much rainbowing.

Hi Russ, you are right it has been a long time coming LOL,glad to see you here my good friend.

Arnie.d,this first capture I think is setup wrong,I found some settings I forgot to set, like I said it has been a while since I had my LD player hooked up to my PC,I am going to play with the settings a little more, and hopefully capture ANH tonight, and I just checked my LD's for any sign of rot,and there is NO tackiness around them yet, thank GOD.

so how did you IVTC yours,if I remember right it changes throughout the movie.

and I will filter a little bit,I am hoping Moth3r,Dr.M and G-Force will give me a hand in all that, and ChainsawAsh offered to do the menu's and such,I hate doing menu's.

and thank you guys for chiming in,I appreciate it.

I didn't do the ivtc of the new capture yet. But I use virtualdub's manual ivtc. I process the entire movie 5 times (for every ivtc setting) and than I cut out all the properly ivtced parts from these 5 sources to create the whole movie again. Lot of work.

yes that does sound like a lot of work,I use avisynth, but I will figure something out,I was curious if the pattern changes from LD side to LD side,or if it actually changes throughout the same side?

OK ANH is on my drive,I will cap ESB once this baby is encoded so I can free up space,I have almost 100 GB's of lossless avi files of GForce's script with minor tweaks by me of the GOUT Trilogy still on there and I wil not be deleting those for a while.

There are multiple changes per side. I think I found 33 changes for ANH.

DJ,

just to let you know, I'm very excited about this project. I would love to help, but I have to admit that it can only be in a limited capacity, as I have a newborn now, and I just can't devote the kind of time I used to. I think the first step would to be to get the best capture you can, and do the best IVTC job you can, then you'll have something I can help with.

I've used telecide many times now and it hasn't failed me yet, even on extremely noisy and messed up video. Just gotta tweak it for the particular source...

I've had Telecide fail me on the initial starfield pan down.

RE: Star Wars Trilogy JSC "Take 2"

Sure, the standard method

Telecide()
Decimate(5)

can fail (if that's what you meant). But there are lots of settings... On a particular troublesome video I had to use this for example:

Telecide(guide=1, back=1, gthresh=50, vthresh=30)
Decimate(mode=2)

Haven't specifically tried to IVTC sw though.

Just wanted to say that I downloaded the preview clip and it looks great!

There's a little aliasing visible on C3PO's shoulders, I guess that's a feature of the source, not the encode.

Keep up the good work!

RE: Star Wars Trilogy JSC "Take 2"

You could try something like

assumetff()
telecide(guide=1, back=1)
decimate()

This usually goes before any filtering/resizing (except perhaps derainbow).

If that doesn't work, try posting an unresized clip.

Just wanted to drop a line and let everyone know I have NOT forgotten about this,I was just on a big time hunt for all the SW 1080p HD files and I now have them ALL,including the kick ass German rips, plus I was away all last weekend watching the #24 race his ass off.

and wanted to let you guys know that there may be a "Take 2" on the 97 SE's as well, but if and when that happens it will get it's own thread.

OK here are a couple of samples of the inside Bens Hut scene,1 is just the .m2v file, the other is a sample VOB file complete with audio, now NOTHING but IVTC was done,so NO cropping of any sort, the Japanese subs are there.

So see what you think and lets start pounding this baby out.

sample m2v:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/cc8der

sample VOB:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/dr55hy

*remember these have no post processing at all,it is even still 4:3 LB.

@ g-force,1 thing though, when we start working on this it will be in avi form, not m2v,so would you want a sample avi file as well?
