I wondered the same thing about collectors not wanting the print scanned. Just doesn't make sense to me at all. Maybe some one can clear this one up.
Yeah, probably similar to how people who own videogame prototypes and things like that don't want the ROMs to get dumped.
Though with film that's a little bit different...because it's not like 35mm is the only way possible to watch The Matrix...
I have it on VHS (ex-rental, I think), but I doubt it would be the same audio as the HBO recording.
Very interesting.

J.R.R. Tolkien said (in The Hobbit Or There And Back Again):
The next morning was a midsummer's morning as fair and fresh as could be dreamed: blue sky and never a cloud, ...
But if you color correct the film so that fire is orange instead of red, then the blue sky would be...

To those who would say they can weather it, that they're not afraid, I'd remind them of Yoda's remark to Luke before he entered the tree on Dagobah.
My willpower is strong, I have seen terrors that even Rifftrax couldn't fix.
But seriously, I'm thinking about watching it with friends in a couple weeks...I was originally thinking about watching it straight, but I'm thinking it might be a better idea to watch it with Rifftrax synced to it.

Are there actually any theaters that screened The Hobbit on 35mm? Would be interesting to know!
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure our cheap theatre (or whatever you call them, second run?) didn't show The Hobbit because they couldn't get access to a 35mm print.
I don't know if that means there weren't any prints, though. I think they had a similar issue with Man of Steel, but were able to show it for a day or two (because we did see it).
And I don't really mind the tint in it, it's kind of cute in an otherworldly kind of way...and who's to say that skies aren't greenish on Middle Earth? Tolkein always describes fire and torchlight as being "red", and that doesn't sound very accurate to me...
Obviously, FotR is a different story.
Awesome =)
I'm going to try my hardest to make sure that this year is the year I finally see the Holiday Special. I hope it's everything I've heard it is!

So... anyone gonna pull out the 04 dvd to compare the cropping? Moth3r made a pretty serious, and largely ignored thus far, claim that deserves addressing.
I didn't bother because the last time I checked, the 04 DVDs did not include the original monkeyface Emporer, and have all of the original grain scrubbed away (though I guess grain isn't the most difficult thing in the world to fake). So if it's a hoax, they're doing a really good job, and doing an even better job with their A New Hope "preservation".
Also, they did a really good job of faking the video footage of the film going through a projector :)

It's going to be at least 4 more days, it took this much to upload half of disc one. :(
How's it coming?
I jumped on MySpleen planning to have the download start while I'm sleeping, but it looks like V2 isn't there yet.

...for me though the atmosphere is somewhat lacking in other versions to different extents and I'm so glad to have found this project.
Yeah, I've only watched the 1999 a couple times, but I think I like it a lot better so far...though some scenes are barely different, and some of the blue scenes might be a little too blue...
But that's weird that they'd make such a huge error over the mono soundtrack. That's the only way I ever watch the movie.
I don't mind fullscreen when it's open matte, especially if it's not a very artistic movie (like comedies, etc.), but pan'n'scan stuff always feels cramped to me, especially when it's supposed to be a letterbox aspect.
Off the top of my head, one movie I haven't been able to watch in widescreen yet is G.I. Joe (the original animated one). I know they originally drew most of it with the intention of being matted to widescreen, but I've tried watching the Shout! Factory disc a couple times now, and I always end up switching it back to fullscreen.
BTW, if you really want the "the way I originally saw them" experience, why not just get a good VHS collection going? ;) Thrift stores always have way more than they can get rid of.
Last time I found anything good, I grabbed a copy of Sidekicks...which I doubt will end up on DVD any time soon =(
But if they had released it as the 1999 timing, people would complain that it wasn't the original theatrical version ;)
Much like a certain trilogy...

Would just like to say that this is incredible... one man alone is doing what a major publisher could not... twice.
Could not?
I'm sure they could release the 1999 revisionist color timing on Blu if they wanted to.
Unless you're talking about the 5.1 folddown mono.

A film colour-correction and cleanup may also be protected, if shown to be unique to the release.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure all of the cleanup and restoration they did for the 35th Anniversary edition counts ;) Even if not everyone agrees with the altered cropping.
I'm not entirely certain that they did use the BluRay, though...it looked really clean, but I'm not familiar enough with any one transfer to say if the cropping was different or not. I know when they did Manos: Hands of Fate, they said they managed to get a theatrical print for it (and not that master reel Kickstarter restoration).
Weird.
I know the Google video got taken down, but I don't know why they'd take that kind of risk unless somehow they got permission...
But then again, when they did Night of the Living Dead for Rifftrax Live, it looked an awful lot like the BluRay and not a public domain print...but I could be wrong.

...what am I supposed to do now?
Looks like, as with Star Wars Trilogy on home video, they boosted the heck out of the brightness for the darker scenes.
IMO, if any of us need to watch a brightness boosted version of Halloween because we're using an old analogue TV, we probably aren't going to be using a BD quality version of it ;)

And don't ASK ME to regrading it (again) using the VHS colors this time!!!
The VHS colors don't look that different from the (original release) DVD, they just have a lot of rainbow noise in them.
Unless you're confusing them with the shots from the featurette (the ones that are more blue/purple).

Now on a MySpleen near you...
When people post those thumbnail shots like that, is there supposed to be a secret way we are able to see the shots at full size? Or is it supposed to just be a teaser kind of thing?
Because I see them a lot in our little "bootleg circles" and I've only once seen a link to the full sized shots to accompany them.

Of course they are... from 1979, I think.
I mean most of them were posted here before they started the blog.

Would be interesting to see what this LD release looks like. Presumably it's open matte...
It would probably look very similar to those open matte VHS screencaps ;)
Now upload it to YouTube in 240p, and then download it, and then upload it again, and then download it again, etc. Maybe add a watermark and then cover it up with a different watermark. It might take a few passes before you get the authentic "eBaum's World" look.
These shots so far are all really old, you two ;)
