Hi Hal,

I’ve scrolled through the edit to see the new changes. Wanted to point out that there is outdated subtitles in “Leia sensed the end of her Jedi path”.

^ Darn. You’re right. Oh, well! Dialogue changes that don’t affect sync are tricky because they only get corrected if you specifically remember them in the moment.

Also… y’all really gonna make me have to spell out the hidden special surprise in this release, huh?

Replaced Palp’s music with Electro’s dubstep heavy soundtrack from TAS2?

OH SNAP, I didn’t even think to check at first, but this comment made me take another look: there’s a new commentary track! With MoviesRemastered, RogueLeader, and SherlockPotter!

Christmas really came early this year! I love your commentaries on all your edits, Hal, and I’m looking forward to listening to this new group one.

I’ll echo everyone else and say what a mind-blowing achievement this is. Thank you to everyone who contributed - and especially to Hal for doing such an exceptional job leading us on the journey. It’s been an absolute privileged to have worked with you all over the past year or so.

I’d also like to point out - this is the first time I’ve seen all of the crackly saber effects implemented, and they look amazing! (And Hal, brilliant job with the added sound effects to really drive the effect home.) It’s also the first I’ve seen of the milky eye removal that Nev did - Originally, I didn’t really care about the change either way; but the new version honestly looks so much better.

Just absolutely amazing work all around!

Krausfadr and I worked out a plan to hopefully export the video stream again in a better way, but I’m going to wait a little while before doing it in case any problems come up to address while at it. (And I’ll probably make the less-big, formerly 720p version a little smaller.)

So far there’s the “death of her son” being in the subtitles, and I noticed I accidentally applied the LUT to the space establishing shot of Endor.

And I really hope you all enjoy our commentary track!! I wish I could have included more people but I wanted to keep it to a manageable size. Went off without a hitch but I was afraid the chance would go up that there’d be someone whose recording would be screwed. I think we got out of it all right.

There’s a small issue right before the puppet show, Poe’s line “Let’s split up, see what the locals know.” was spaced apart to add some of the alien narrator in the middle, but the split was not done properly so Poe ends up saying “Let’s split up… up, see what the locals know.” It could be mistaken for a random background sound but he definitely says “up” twice.

Also I think something’s wrong with the audio on the Jedi voices scene, some of the voice lines sound very quiet, they’re almost impossible to hear, like there’s a missing audio channel or something (I watched with headphones and it was very noticeable). I think it’s an issue with the work done to add the Sors line, since I remember the test CaptainFaraday shared a while back also had that issue, but I didn’t comment on it since I figured it was just a test on the line’s placement and not final audio.

Those were the two issues I noticed on my first watch, as well as some artifacting on darker scenes but I see that’s being handled.

That could definitely be an issue inherited from my handiwork, in which case, my apologies. I listened to it with headphones and without before sending it to Hal and I didn’t notice any issue, however, my hearing isn’t particularly fantastic so it’s possible that it just slipped me by.

Edit: I just thought to point out - the volume levels vary on the Jedi voices in the theatrical version; some of them are very faint to begin with. Is it possible that’s all it is, but were expecting them to be all regular dialogue levels? (I haven’t watched TROSAV2 yet for the record; I’m saving it until I have a day next week when I can watch it uninterrupted.)

Just got done listening to the brand new commentary track. Really didn’t expect that. I loved it and was great to listen to hear from Movies Remastered, RogueLeader, sherlockpotter and poppasketti. I literally jumped in my seat from “CHEWIE!” and loved Rey’s ultimate motivation to calling the lightsaber.

In all seriousness, I did have fun just contributing to this project, as I wasn’t around to contribute to your other projects, Hal. I’m glad that it was this project that had the most collaborative effort.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the commentary. We recorded it right after Thanksgiving, before we had any idea it was about to be released because you were about to discover kewlfish’s old saber footage!

And I’ll check in on those audio related issues to fix them in due course. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the Jedi voices, though, as they sound perfectly normal to me. What version were you watching? I wonder if perhaps it’s only playing the front channels and you aren’t hearing the rears, either due to the process of converting for the two mp4 releases or your software player.

It was the big 1080p file, I checked on both VLC and the Windows Movies app. But it could very well be something on my end - I watched on an old laptop since I don’t have access to my usual setup at the moment. Apologies if that’s the case.

Just out of curiosity I took a look through the old community survey I ran back a year and a half ago.

The vast majority of questions which got a very strong response in favour of a particular change match to changes in this edit - things like the Snoke vats and the timing of the Palpatine reveal, simplifying the Final Order, its fleet, and Palpatine’s motivations. There was also strong support to make Mustafar more obvious, to remove the lightspeed skipping, to change the mechanism for how the force dagger guided Rey, and to make some of the references to prior movies less jarring.

Notably different is that at the time the community really had an issue with Rey Palpatine as an idea, favouring Rey Nobody. There’s still an appetite for a Rey Nobody cut these days but it feels like many people have come around to it more in the last eighteen months, as various edits have been able to integrate the idea more smoothly across the entire sequel trilogy. I’ve certainly flip-flopped back to favouring Palpatine (for the sake of canon, really), so I’m glad we’ve been able to make such peace with it. Similarly there was some split on how Rey self-identifies at the end, but I think this edit does a great job of making the original ‘Rey Skywalker’ moment far more earned.

Thinking back to around that time, we’d just had jonh’s force ghosts scene released. I think that was a really crucial edit for this community, because it gave a lot of us the catharsis we wanted for that key moment, and you could feel the shift back to hope that the movie was salvageable via an edit, which redoubled peoples’ commitment.

There were a few more radical ideas back then which ultimately didn’t lift off - things like changing some of the planets to known ones from the rest of the saga, or making Rey’s force lightning gold. I’m sure there’s still room for them in other edits, but like TFA Restructured and TLJ Legendary, I think this edit has threaded the right balance in terms of adherence to canon. The big thing the survey missed (discussion had only just started on the idea at the time) was making the Skywalker saber cracked like Kylo’s, which I’m so glad got pulled off in the end.

Anyway, I found it interesting to think back to the time when TROS was still fresh and this edit was in the very early stages. It’s amazing how far it’s come and a lasting testament to all of the contributors here for their skill and persistence.

Hey Hal,

I just listened to the commentary track and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My main takeaway is that Popasketti is more Legendary than Luke Skywalker lol. But seriously though, I wanna congratulate you and every collaborator of this edit. This is outstanding work!

Really enjoyed watching this again. Not sure if this was noted by someone before, but the color LUT doesn’t seem to have applied to the scene after Poe and Rey’s argument. The color grading completely changes between those two scenes.

I’m still amazed at how well the Duel of the Fates track works over the Ben-Rey fight. Every other version of this I’ve seen on YT removes the atmosphere of the scene. Here, it’s not epic. It’s haunting (as it should be).

The puppet show was a great addition. Continues the theme of the importance of myth from TLJ.

Which two scenes exactly?

The scene where Poe and Rey argue about the damage done to the Falcon/BB8. When Finn joins in, the color grading switches to the original film’s tone.

There’s no way that should be the case, knowing my process. But I’ll check as I do the eventual reencode. Thanks.

Yeah I don’t know if it’s my display, but I redownloaded it to check and the grading still switched. There’s another oddity with that scene too. I didn’t notice it in the changelist, but 0:45-1:07(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yfZcUC2rB_I) are missing. We go from Rey calling Poe a difficult man to Finn suddenly talking about just landing. I don’t know if that was intentional.
