You might not believe Lucas said this...

The following text is from an article I just found on the msnbc website:
Stooges DVD revives colorization debate

Quote

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas, who testified with Steven Spielberg before Congress in the 1980s against colorization and other forms of alteration, said the process yanks such slapstick performers as the Stooges out of the black-and-white universe they belong in.

“Would color distract from their comedy and make it not as funny anymore?” Lucas said. “Maybe just the fact that they’re in black and white makes it funny, because their humor is dated. But by putting it in black and white, it puts it in a context where you can appreciate it for what it was.

“But you try to make it in full living color and try to compare it to a Jim Carrey movie, then it’s hard for young people to understand. Because you’re then thinking you’re comparing apples to apples, when you’re not. You’re comparing apples to oranges. I’m saying it’s not fair to the artist.”

WHAT!!!
He testified AGAINST film alterations BEFORE CONGRESS!!!

Alright GL, B&W is what makes Stooges funny, and “cheesy” rubber suits and Han shooting first makes Star Wars great.
As Mark Hamill once said (paraphrasing) “He cannibalized thousands of battleship model kits…it was amazing how Lucas could take glue and popsicle sticks and makes something out of it.”

This is unbelievable!

Ones you get a whiff of the old "green thing" - it´s all over pal. Everything is forgotten, ideas, values, honor and respect. Lucas just became too greedy...

It's good to have an actual quote of what he said. I remember reading about him having fought against the colorization of black and white films before and I've used that in arguments against him and his changes several times, but I didn't have any actual quotes from him.

Yeah, that's why I really don't post there that much, only when there's something that I really need to speak out about. A lot of times I simply won't respond to someone who responded to me, because it seems that some people are just so pro-Lucas and pro-Special Edition and make some really ridiculous arguments.

And some of them are just sheep, plain and simple. I've heard several people say that they're fine with the changes and they'll accept because Lucas did them. Liking the changes because you like them is one thing, but liking them just because George Lucas is the one making them is just dumb. These people need to start thinking for themselves.

What would be really funny is if it turned out that all of the changes we had seen so far were fake and that the DVDs were the 1997 versions. I would laugh so hard at all the people who are so excited for the boxset and to get all these new changes.

Surprisingly the SW BBS 'thought police' havn't closed the thread yet...

I like how some people miss the point and go into 'it's his films - he can do what he want' - must be some sort of automatic defence of GL mechanism...

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

im sure all of us dont care that he's changing them...
but he has to release something which show's the difference between the first and final draft...
otherwise we're never gonna have anything to compare these to...

i mean theres tons of reasons why these should be released... but of course no one understands do they...

I didn't last very long there. Not that I was thrown out; all the unchecked drooling over GL's brilliance made me sick. A body can take only so much.

Same here. Why does our fandom have to be so obnoxious at times, and why does that not drive us away? I don't understand; maybe it's the Force.

Nothing questioning Lucas's own ethics, though. That's to be expected, though, I guess.

I think if this site had 60 Million signatures on the petition Lucas would jump at the chance to release the OT. Lucasfilm have conned us more times than I can think of with the numerous rereleases for one reason, money. Most of my respect for Lucas went out of the window after TPM and even more so when I read an article recently saying he disliked what Kershner had done with ESB so much that for ROTJ he hired a young director, Richard Marquand, that he could easily bully!

lmao!!!

typical isn't it?

THE BEST FILM of the OT & good ole GL dont like it!

Are you surprised?

I've always wondered how pissed off he must be that the firm fan favourite is one that he had the least involvement behind the camera in!

Im gonna have to stop reading comments like that about GL, its making me lose what little respect I had left, & worse still its making my 27 year love of Star Wars leave a bad taste in my mouth

As for the post that started this topic.......

I cant believe that GL would have the balls to come out & make a statement like that! talk about the POT calling the KETTLE black!

What an absolute HYPOCRITE!

Kershner will do a commentary on this DVD. I am sure on it he will express how he feels about the Special Editions and Lucas. Also if thats true (which I doubt) I do loose some respect for Lucas. Theres no doubt The Empire Strikes Back is much better then Return of the Jedi. I heard Lucas stated in another interview that he has no favorite of his creations.
