What a sweet find on reddit/SW - with quality imagination and clever work for one of the first known fan films of Star Wars…

Star Wars (1977) - by Lucas Balistreri - 8mm collage stop-motion animation transfer

www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWVwC0p37PI - a 27 second video from the Bryan Young youtube channel.

The blurb: 'This student animated film was found in a batch of 8mm footage. It was in a Super8 cartridge loader labeled Fall 1977 - Animation Reel 2.

The film was made by Lucas Balistreri.

This being completed in Fall of 1977 marks it as one of the earliest Star Wars fan films.

(Doing some detective work, I believe this was completed in Mr. Moorhead’s 8th grade film class at what was then Markham Jr. High School in San Jose, CA – any other information about it or the filmmakers would be greatly appreciated)

Found and digitized by Bryan Young - October 27, 2026’

‘The flyer text’…

Star Wars is truly a magical space fantasy adventure. Taking full advantage of the technical wizardry of modern film, writer, director George Lucas has conceived of Star Wars as an expression of his boyhood fantasy life, his love for all the great mysteries and adventures in books and movies. Star Wars is a distillation of the joys Lucas experienced in the hours he spent watching television and movies and reading comic books and comic strips.

Star Wars produced by Gary Kurtz stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Harry Fischer, Peter Cushing, and Alec Guinness. It’s a high energy action movie uniting the hardware of contemporary space adventure with romantic fantasies of sword and sorcery, plus a dash of wish fulfillment. Lucas’ goal has been to make an imaginative entertainment experience that would transport audiences into an unknown galaxy thousands of light years from Earth. Star Wars is a tale of heroes and villains and a romance between a young naive boy and a beautiful spirited princess.

It is an odyssey from innocence to knowledge. The ages old tale of the passage of the sword from one generation to the next. It is a world where magic is possible and love and goodness triumph over evil. Star Wars follows a young man, Luke Skywalker, through exotic worlds uniquely different from our own. Leaving the small arid planet of Tatooine, Luke plunges into an extraordinary intergalactic search for the kidnapped rebel Princess Leia from the planet Alderaan. Luke is joined in this adventure by Ben Kenobi, the last of the Jedi Knights, who were the guardians of peace and justice in the old days before the dark times came to the galaxy. Han Solo, the dashing cynical captain of the Millennium Falcon, a Corellian spaceship. Chewbacca, a Wookiee, a race of tall arthropods with large blue eyes. And the robots, C3PO and R2-D2.

This odd band of adventurers battle Grand Moff Tarkin, the evil governor of the Imperial Outland regions, and Darth Vader, the malevolent Dark Lord of the Sith, who employs his extrasensory powers to aid Governor Tarkin in the destruction of the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire.

Star Wars is a space fantasy designed to stimulate imaginations, entertain, and give viewers an infinite variety of vicarious emotional, physical, and mystical delights.

Star Wars is now available for private viewing from 20th Century Fox video. Vibrant stereo on VHS, mono-compatible, and the highest standards of technology, materials, and workmanship in assembly will ensure full enjoyment of this unrivaled space fantasy. Winner of SIX Academy Awards. Star Wars is available in Beta and VHS formats.

121 minutes. Color 1977, rated PG. Catalog number 1130-20130-30.

I just love this blurb by the way - it really captures the essence of 1977 Star Wars before it truly became ‘episode 4’ of a convoluted saga. The idea of a band of misfits taking on the bad guys (not to mention the hint of romance between Luke and Leia) has been so muddied over the years. I really love the innocence of this. Thanks for the post…
