Star Wars 50th Anniversary "Box Set" - wishful thinking

Author
Time

Today I was thinking about how so many classic music artists release “box sets” with previously unreleased demos, live recordings, etc. I think for the Star Wars 50th Anniversary we should get a Star Wars “video box set” with alternate takes of classic scenes, deleted scenes cleaned up, maybe video of table reads (if there is anything like that), and more video outtakes like that!! There must be tons of stuff that was filmed but never used / never released.

I know it’s wishful thinking, but IMO this would be awesome!!

Right like the so called lost cut of Star Wars. The Rough cut of the Empire Strikes Back. Marquand’s cut of Jedi. I don’t expect these. They didn’t give us the Gareth Edward cut of Rogue One or the Lord and Miller cut of Solo.

Though they may have deleted scenes. trims and color dailies. Even that I have no idea if the money is even there for a physical UHD release at all. for a no frills just the movie. Audio tracks and commentary. Maybe a couple of legacy documentaries and some deleted scenes, not all.

I’d love something like an Arrow chunky box set with booklets and posters. Trading cards. I don’t expect that. Its SONY.

Look at the Beskar edition for Mando its just two metal posters and its over 200 US.

i think the star wars 50th anniversary dvds box set edition should have 5 discs

disc 1 the original 70s unchanged verison
disc 2 the 2004 speical edition verison
disc 3 the disney era verison
disc 4 extras from the 70s 80s and 90s
disc 5 extras from the 2000s 2010s and 2020s

earth 1 nowadays kinda reminds me of the star wars multiverse

there are a lot of good topics in this forums

I think it would be brilliant to have such a box set - though hopefully separate to any actual physical media release of the original theatrical trilogy films themselves. If nothing else to keep the affordability of such a video box set aspect down - though I guess if that happens we’ll likely have an array of choices - running from a ‘bare-bones’ release, through to steelbook sets, through to deluxe box sets. 👍

Looking forward to seeing some of the promos / PR press packs for the ALI OOT Restoration project coming to cinemas soon - I suppose some of the artwork used there may well also be used for a later physical media release… and as an aside it is always intriguing to see the various custom box sets that fans come up with and share online. Some of those custom box sets surpass the official releases, IMHO (and it is lot of fun and satisfaction in making your own sets etc).

It is also possible we won’t see a ‘box set’ release until after 2033… IF Lucasfilm/Disney decides not to release the ALI OOT Restoration of the Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi… until both films have their 50th anniversaries, respectively. It may be unlikely - yet it is also a possibility; them looking to maximise their returns… individual film releases on various physical media formats (DVD, blu ray, steelbook, 4K/UHD) - with perhaps barebones, regular, and deluxe options - for each film thereof.

I love the following comprehensive video by our very own captainsolo - and likely something a fair few of us on here may be hoping for on a physical media release…

As long as there isn’t a Beskar edition at 200 that just has two metal posters.

What we should have is set with original poster art. So it features, Luke, Han and Leia. The Droids potentially. Obviously, Darth Vader or Yoda.

If its not 00t trilogy as a set, It should be a Star Wars 1977 specific release. How about a Blu-Ray 4k/Combo.

If they only release the one and put the one in cinema, people are going to say where is TESB, where is ROTJ. Or if it’s the only thing on Disney or physical of the restored releases.

Ooooh, this is a great idea. Would love to see that.

But that would go against the long tradition of Lucasfilm forcing you to double dip and buy the same content three or four times! For example, if you want all the bonus content for the OT you have to pick up the 2004 DVD box set for that bonus disc, then pick up the 2011 Complete Saga box set for the deleted scenes disc and documentaries disc, then the 2020 Disney 4K releases of each film for the new bonus content, etc. etc. Not to mention the From Star Wars to Jedi documentary that is stuck on VHS

Disney thought uploading that to youtube was sufficient from Star Wars to Jedi.

Very true, and probably why my “wishful thinking” won’t happen. But, I’d really love to see a standalone box for each original movie with outtakes, a nice / detailed booklet, copies of the promo materials, etc. Rock bands have become notorious for this the past few years, and I really think this format would work for the OT. But, for all the reasons you said it probably won’t happen.

I’m hoping we get a box set for the theatrical cuts with Blu-ray, DVD, and UHD, along with original poster reproductions and a making-of documentary.

I’m just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

Unsurprisingly (if you’re familiar with my posts), I would like to see a lot more of the “lost” footage for the Battle of Endor (in spaaaace). What little we got on the Blu-rays was wonderful, but there’s quite a bit still missing, not to mention half-finished effects work.

Or that extended boardroom scene from the first film that got shown at Celebration 2017.

Regarding on a box set, I came up with something on the Disney Fanon Wiki that I think everyone will love:

Tell me what you think (disregard the cover, someone added that for some reason).

I’ve seen that quite a few times; great job, btw. Really appreciate the work you put into it. Personally, I’d rather just get the OT and nothing else.

They haven’t reissued just the OT (without also doing the same for the other movies) since 2006. I feel like we’d be getting reissues of the other films as well just like in late 2011 and early 2020. We’re hitting the seven year mark again next year anyway, so it would be more or less on time.

Thank you. ^_^

I’m someone who believes in the unlimited potential of physical media. If something is done right, it can make anyone happy.

I’ve made some other ideas for more sets on that wiki including The Clone Wars and some of the Legends shows. More to come soon. 😉
