This is such a great write-up, I love how you explained everything and I couldn’t agree more.

There is no way to recapture the lightning in a bottle moment that was Star Wars, the 1977 movie, that blended a classical hero’s journey, spaghetti western, samurai films, war cinema, high fantasy, etc. to spontaneously create a massive galaxy with endless facets out of nothing. The only way to do something that big again would be to make something wholly new, not Star Wars related at all.

I can always rewatch the OT whenever I want (partly thanks to the great restoration efforts of this board). But for new releases, I want something new, I want daring and bold choices that excite me. Andor did something new with the political themes of the OT, The Mandalorian did something new with the western tone of the OT, and these shows worked very well. I would even argue this was the biggest strength of The Last Jedi, a movie I personally enjoy. And yes, it feels like a humongous waste of potential to cancel The Acolyte.

Luminous beings are we…

Well Yeah, they brought in OT actors in the so called sequels, and they brought Hayden and Ewan back and Genevieve from the prequel for Mon Mothma and Jimmy Smitts for Bail Organa.

As per the sequels whether a Rey movie gets made, I think the possibility of it happening before 2030 diminishes by the year.

Continuing actors or characters from the Clone wars and rebels in different projects.

Does the Lando show or movie get made I’d say its doubtful. The droids show about Artoo and Threepio live action I say that is dead as well.

Other than in voice over work or cartoons I don’t see Tony returning to play Threepio.

Pius Dea era sounds like the right mix of space operatic action with strong historical influences to get some blood flowing through SW again.

I’d like to see a one season series about a tribe of Jawas and their adventures selling things of dubious origins…and information.

I always wanted a Star Wars series focused on Vader, starting just after Ep. III. Everything he went through those first 1-3 years. His torment of being in the suit, of losing Padme, his anger towards Obi-Wan, the early control the Emperor had over him, etc. I’d pay “extra” to see this.

There’s a comic book which covers that, and IMO that’s the best place for that kind of story to exist.

I would like a series (or any media) set between episodes 1 and 2. Something that focusses on the rise of the separatists. We could have lots of small disputes like the one in episode 1 on naboo and see how the republic and the Jedi are struggling to keep peace. We could see what Dooku has been up to in the time between becoming Sidious apprentice and geonosis. We could have some adventures with Anakin and Obi-Wan that deepen their bond. We could also see how they are dealing with the loss of Qui-Gon, etc. And we could have Palpatines re-election as chancellor which could be interesting, especially if we see a bit more of sidious machinations. We could also have some Legends stories like Outbound flight, Rogue Planet or maybe even the Jedi Quest series (though I’ve never read those) be adapted.

I just feel like that is an underexplored part of Star Wars, its the calm before the storm (the clone wars) and I think that could make for a really interesting back drop for any story.

“Vader! Hologram, now!”

That sounds like a good animated series, although I hope they’d base it somewhere other than Tatooine.

I’ve never been more unenthused and even so apathetic about Disney Star Wars. Even hating Disney Star Wars is a thing. No I’m well beyond that. And like Kreia said, Apathy is death. Apathy is worth than death. Because even a rotten corpse feeds the birds and insects.

Other than tiptoeing around the timeline and lame spinoffs that have nothing to do the OT heroes what do they have?

The requel trilogy ended Star Wars as a brand.

I’m only honestly interested in new legends material. Because Andor was a one and done thing.

Movies like the Mandalorian or Starfighter aren’t going to save Star Wars.

Honestly, they kind of have to move beyond the OT era and Mark, Carrie and Harrison’s characters. And the prequel era has been overly trodden. How much longer can they trot out Hayden Christensen to maintain any audience.

So, they need to start fresh after The Rise of Palpatine. Good luck to Mr Filoni. I wouldn’t take that Job for all the tea in China. as they used to say.

I’ve been pondering the “what next” question for Lucasfilm, especially with Star Wars Starfighter on the horizon.

Instead of ignoring or hiding from the franchise’s history, I think a brilliant path forward would be to coordinate the project alongside a hypothetical, multi-month theatrical reissue of the completely unaltered, unedited 1977 original trilogy cuts.

By stripping away subsequent CGI alterations and editing changes, these original versions offer a massive “artificial scarcity” advantage that standard streaming platforms just legally can’t replicate right now. It feels like a rare win-win scenario that could work heavily in Disney’s favour commercially, while finally giving us the archival releases we’ve wanted.

I wrote up a quick breakdown analysing how this strategy could benefit both the studio and the fans https://grafxflow.co.uk/blog/general-discussion/2027-star-wars-pivot-how-disney-should-weaponise-nostalgia-and-fix-box-office

Sounds like good brand synergy, but not like anything Disney will do.

They want to move on to Starfighter. The 50th won’t even get the promotion or the long theatrical run the 1997 cut got. its going to be a limited window, and gone faster than everyone who would like to see the 1977 film, gets a chance to see it or buy tickets. Likely we are talking weeks at best.

Where are the toys, the novelization, the soundtrack? comic adaptation? There isn’t even a trailer. No such legacy promotions are being teased. Nor a 4K UHD home video release after. but it’s still early yet.

They did call it a “yearlong” 50th anniversary, although that could simply mean the Star Wars ‘77 release in theaters February, up on D+ May the 4th along with maybe Empire and Jedi, then the OOT (and maybe OPT?) on 4k disc same day as Starfighter in September.

They’d undoubtedly put the unaltered Empire back in theaters in 2030 and Jedi in ‘33 just like they did with RotJ (albeit the 2019 version), Empire (the ‘04/2011 version back in 2020), TPM, and RotS for their recent milestone anniversaries.

Re-releasing all the films in theaters in the same year feels like something they’d do for the OT’s 3D conversion’s debut, maybe with every last remaining mistake fixed and, uh, a few new surprises. It’s the kind of thing I could see happening when Lucasfilm figures out what the next big Star Wars saga is going to be, just like the ‘97 SE happened as part of the lead up to Episode I. Disney could also use the 3D versions to cross-promote Avatar 4/5.

That blog article of yours is beautifully written and laid out - with some ideas I think we could only dream of for the 50th anniversary / ‘what comes next for Star Wars’. If Lucasfilm/Disney adopted anything like that approach (with considered care and thought)… I think there’d be a few satisfied fans on here and elsewhere.

Just reading through some of your other quality articles on Star Wars (https://grafxflow.co.uk/blog/general-discussion) - some really old-skool levels of quality that we’d find in the more ‘premiere’ publications of years ago. Nicely done. 👍

I wish they’d do something like that, or other ways of making it an event, like they used to do. I think they may use it as a way to promote Starfighter, which is okay, but would rather see the the re-release be the main event.

Yeah, I agree. I wish Star Wars 1977 was coming out on May the 25th. In a wide release. Like a new movie and promoted as such. Its Disney. They won’t even give it the 1997 Special Edition level of treatment.
It will be in the theater and gone before anyone can blink. In March it will be gone.

I was thinking about how so many classic music artists now release “box sets” with previously unreleased demos, live recordings, etc. I think for the 50th we should get a Star Wars “box set” with alternate takes of classic scenes, deleted scenes cleaned up, maybe some video of table reads (if there is anything like that), and more stuff like that!!

I wonder if they have the original take of. I’m Luke Starkiller I’m here to rescue you. Mark said he filmed that. I don’t know if it was reshot or looped in a booth.

I really hope that the ST characters get a chance to shine in their own right. I think the production of that trilogy was so bogged down by a combination of corporate meddling and fandom conflict, with TFA cultivating such a didactically anti-Prequel OT nostaliga fest, TLJ getting too bogged down in exploring meta-narratives about Star Wars as a cultural object, and TROS trying to being a board room calculated fan-pleaser for everyone that satisfied nobody. As a consequence, Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo always kind of felt like objects directed for these purposes instead of getting meaningful stories in their own right.

I would love a new Trilogy that stakes out its independence from the franchise’s past, a two-hander split between Rey’s attempt to form a new order of force users based on primordial Jedi principles rather than the strict form of the later order that explores the nature of the Force beyond the Sith and Jedi-developed doctrines, intertwined with a narrative about Finn working on Stormtrooper deprogramming with a narrative connected to Poe the process of rebuilding some form of governance after the last hundred years of galactic conflict, winding down the galaxy from an intense period of militarization and armed conflict. I don’t want another Empire, I don’t want some other dark military element, I want in anchored in these stories that break beyond the mold of what “Star Wars” is. While it’s a shame that there won’t be a solid post-OT New Republic/NJO story, this approach lets you get into those themes without being a retread, and giving the future of your franchise some runway to move forward. They need compelling blockbuster drama that doesn’t just retreat into a formulaic approach.

The problem is the people making a new movie will need a new Sith, a new conflict or superweapon. Because they will believe with no conflict you don’t have a story, and these are action movies with pew pew. Spaceship battles and lightsaber fights.

A part of the Disney trilogy problem was wanting to move away from the too much politics of the prequel and be more like the OT. get right into the action, no need for extensive worldbuilding or exposition. a requel if you will. That was why they focused on we are building on real sets, filming in a real desert. Hey look we have real props and puppets here. it’s not all cgi and greenscreen. Why we didn’t get an Imperial remnant or a New Republic or New Jedi order, but Rebels vs Empire again and one lone Jedi against darksiders.

You’ve already spoken of the conceit of TFA being a remake of what became known as a New Hope? in its finished form and story beats. Well, that was on purpose.

And they sold the first one by having Harrison in it. and they had a Luke cameo in the next one, and planned to do the Leia one in the third.

They didn’t do justice to those characters. Their inclusion was a way to get older folks butts into theater seats. An advertising imperative. Icons.

Plus they needed to have Disney new character icons to sell their theme parks and toys. So they created Kylo Ren and Rey. and all the extended Disney characters and lore. It all began with erasing the Expanded Universe. Calling it legends and resetting the entire Star Wars universe and timeline. Giving lip service to George’s movies and characters but not really keeping them the same or protecting them. Though recreating Star Wars in the Disney image, and only really grandfathering in Filoni Star Wars, isn’t really all that surprising. Except for the occasional Ot or prequel nostalgia insert.

In all the chaos and mismanagement, you do get some interesting one offs or art. But it’s hard to make anything good or what would be considered art, or a good story under Disney’s corporate system.

Things might be better if they let Lucasfilm work like an independent studio. But Disney doesn’t do that for Marvel why would they for Star Wars?

I mean, wanting conflict in your Star Wars movies really isn’t that strange. After all, they are action-adventure movies with plenty of pew-pew, spaceship battles and lightsaber fights. The problem with the sequels is that it really feels like nobody wanted to think too hard about what that new conflict should actually be. So instead they reused the basic story beats of the original trilogy and dropped a new set of characters into what was essentially a rebooted version of the same world.

I think the conflict of the sequels should have been much more closely tied to the new characters themselves. That way you could have had something genuinely new instead of Empire vs. Rebels again with slightly different names.

But at the same time, I really feel like these movies were cursed from the start. The Skywalker story was basically finished. But Disney had just spent an enormous amount of money on Star Wars, so of course they weren’t going to buy it and then not continue the main saga. And because the original cast were still alive, leaving them out completely would have seemed insane too. So suddenly you have to incorporate actors in their 60s and 70s into a new generation of action movies while also introducing an entirely new, younger cast who are supposed to become the new faces of Star Wars.

I know a lot of people really wanted to see Han, Luke and Leia reunited, and emotionally I completely understand that. But from a storytelling perspective, I think it creates another problem: what is the story if they’re all back and everything basically worked out for them? Where does the conflict come from if they didn’t fail in some significant way? And how do you make the new characters feel important if the old heroes aren’t just there to pass the torch or occasionally guide them, but are still actively involved in solving the galaxy’s problems?

That’s why the sequels feel like a Frankenstein’s monster to me. I have a huge number of problems with the movies we actually got, but at the same time, some of the things fans complain were missing, and which often show up in fan rewrites, honestly sound even worse to me. Bringing back every old character, rebuilding the Jedi Order exactly as people imagined it, having Luke be an unstoppable Jedi Grandmaster, giving Han and Leia a perfectly happy marriage, and then somehow trying to create a meaningful new trilogy around all of that doesn’t automatically solve the fundamental problem.

I also find it kind of fascinating that the sequels tried to do almost the exact opposite of what the prequels did. The prequels were heavily concerned with politics, institutions, worldbuilding and explaining how the galaxy transformed. The sequels were almost afraid of all of that. They wanted to move fast, get straight to the adventure and recreate the feeling of the original trilogy without stopping to explain too much.

And somehow they still failed to make the new era feel particularly interesting or memorable.

Maybe Star Wars is just impossible to get right.

You can scale up the threat or make it a different threat without tearing apart the existing characters. Keep Luke powerful and consistent, but make him go up against something that matches him in power or tests him in a way he hasn’t dealt with before (no, this does not include a family member going to the dark side.) Killing Han and Leia’s marriage for no reason is not productive and has no effect on the story either way, other than to satisfy bitter people who don’t think happy marriages exist or should exist. If the new Jedi were like they were in the EU it would be a lot better, so I have no complaints there.

I made a thread about this but I think the Cobra Kai show is a great model of how you would do it. The original characters are respected but still have drama and face new problems all the time. Some original characters that were more minor are thoroughly fleshed out and turned into main characters. The new characters are developed through constant direct interactions with the original characters, and the audience cares about them because of those strong relationships.
