Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi - a new animated spin-off series…

‘Volume 3 Release Date and New Star Wars: Visions Spin-off Series’

An exciting announcement about longer-form Visions stories.

www.starwars.com/news/visions-presents-the-ninth-jedi - announcement article at StarWars•com (on 20th April, 2025):-

'Today at Star Wars Celebration Japan, an exciting announcement came out of the Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 panel. After Lucasfilm’s James Waugh revealed a release date for the nine new Star Wars: Visions shorts - October 29, 2025 - he announced an all-new spin-off series of longer stories from Star Wars: Visions.

He invited “The Ninth Jedi” writer and director Kenji Kamiyama to the stage, who thanked the audience for being so supportive and enthusiastic about the adventures of Kara and Juro in “The Ninth Jedi” and the upcoming “Child of Hope.” He then announced that fans will watch Kara’s journey continue to unfold in an all-new spinoff called “Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi.”

“I made a short story called ‘The Ninth Jedi’ during Volume 1,” said Kamiyama. “Director Shiotani is making one more film this time [“Child of Hope”], and it ends with Kara’s departure to look for her father in the first short film.”

“Star Wars: Visions — The Ninth Jedi” features lightsabers that change color depending on one’s Force, according to Kamiyama, and that Kara’s father invented these lightsabers and has been kidnapped.

“What in the world was the reason for such lightsabers,” Kamiyama continues. “I think it will be a story where those secrets will be told.”

Kamiyama concluded by explaining that he will be working in the capacity of supervising director on “Star Wars: Visions Presents — The Ninth Jedi.”’

‘Visions: Volume 3’ airs on 29th Oct 2025; while the ‘Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi’ series… airs on 5th Aug 2026.

I’m really looking forward to see what they come with for this new spin-off series. For me Visions is a quality anthology series - full different animated styles… and I love that none of the stories are ‘canon’ - so any of the stories aren’t restricted or bound by that (with no memberberries or key-jangling cameo appearances or ‘series setups’ etc all to prevalent in certain other GFFA content).

‘The Ninth Jedi’ is probably one of the strongest and well received episodes (and stories) of Visions so far - so it should be interesting to see what the next installment will be in ‘Visions: Volume 3’ - and then with this new animated spinoff series.

If anyone hasn’t yet seen ‘The Ninth Jedi’ episode from Visions Volume 1 (the 5th episode)… you’re in for a treat - something different and fresh in the GFFA; with a striking animation style, stunning direction / cinematography, and quality soundtrack.

I’m so excited this was far and away my favorite short of Volume One, and even though Screacher’s Reach from Volume 2 gives it a good run for its money, it’s still my favorite one. It also makes a lot of sense that of all of the shorts this is the one to get a full limited series as it didn’t feel like a short it felt like an episode 1 for a full length show, and the short was the length of a standard 30 minute episode of TV. I’m assuming it’ll be a full 12-13 episode season, but it could be just 6-8 given Disney+'s propensity for only doing that many episodes.

I’m happy they somehow picked the best one, that was unexpected

Kenji Kamiyama can be hit or miss you can get Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex season 1 and 2, or you might get the awful 3D 3rd and 4th seasons. And you could get a animated lord of the rings Ride of the Rohirrim.

I haven’t seen Visions as no longer have Disney plus.

I think of saw a bit of the old Clone Wars from Genddy and the last season of Dave Filoni and Bad Batch. I don’t believe we get it free no more from Verizon we got a whole year free.

I’m not a big fan of Sola Digital. Production IG did the first two seasons of Stand Alone Complex and in 2D.

Though i have seen one or two of the films they made for Appleseed and i can’t recall if i did watch Starship Troopers. Shinji Aramaki. I did think Lord of the Rings was impressive looking at least.

Does Disney and Sony ever have a plan to release any of the animated Star Wars on physical media?

Edit: having seen both seasons of Visions Ronin is the short that should have been made into a series.

I very much enjoyed the Visions: Volume III episode: ‘The Ninth Jedi - Child of Hope’; a quality episode in itself - yet also set up and left me wanting more…

Thankfully we’ll only have to wait until 2026 to see this new spin-off series featuring Kara and crew in her quest to find her father. (I got some ‘Ulysses 31’ vibes watching Child Of Hope - I hope that continues into the coming series) 👍

Hopefully they’ll make the 2 previous episodes of ‘The Ninth Jedi’ (from Vol.1 and Vol. 3) available for free on the official site / youtube channel etc - as a preview / introduction to the new coming ‘Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi’ series.

When watching some of the visions I was thinking of Captain Future and Ulysses and Star Blazers and stuff like that. None of this stuff comes close to that. I thought the first Ronin Episode of Visions was better than the second.

I watched this short. BUT I don’t know what to think of it. The 9th Jedi has decent animation I suppose.

Lots of different styles from different studios. Reminds me of animatrix or that Batman project where they had different submissions from different animation houses.

I’m not saying I hate Legends aka Visions. But I’m more likely to dip back into Leijiverse and watch Galaxy Express 999, Captain Harlock. Space Battleship Yamato.

I will say an actual series with a dedicated budget, like if it’s actually supported and not done on the cheap could be good.

Seeing how Disney is slashing the budget of Ahsoka season 2 what can animation hope for. The days of Clone Wars level budgets is likely gone. I wonder if they give Dave Filoni peanuts to make Darth Maul Shadow Lord.

But will they have any creative license to really do anything?

Looked alright. For whatever reason every studio in Visions got obsessed with the concept of red lightsabers being used to identify Sith, and they carried forward the silly mood ring lightsabers here. I also rolled my eyes when they built ANOTHER (planet-destroying?) superweapon with kyber crystals. The whole point is that it’s the future, everything is different, and you don’t have to do that stuff anymore!
Other than that it seems cool. The original was easily the best Visions 1 episode. I didn’t watch the follow up one but I definitely will.

I just finished watching the original Japanese option of The Ninth Jedi - and thoroughly enjoyed it! I think I even loved it…

Something fresh, new, distinct - with a few familiar tropes in the GFFA (a powerful superweapon); albeit with a disparate approach on that as well. For me, the series build upon what has come in the past - and looks to tell its own story - and not beholden to the past with all-too familiar fan service or callbacks.

The animation is stunning - especially in the action and emotive scenes. Voice acting was on point. The soundtrack was decent and interesting, if nothing spectacular. I haven’t yet watched the English dub version - though will do so over the weekend.

I’d like to see some more character development from the others within the group in future stories - though as this was the first outing for them… they did quite well, and it could be argued they are keeping their options open and maintaining a mystery about the backstories for future releases.

All 8 episodes are between 20-30 minutes long. The story is broken into two halves - first half being the first episodes, then pushing onwards the final in the 2nd four installments. If you want something new, fun, stylish and cool to watch set in the GFFA this could well be for you. It reminded me of those sweet animated stories we got on endless repeats as kids back in the 80s. Plus, you don’t have to be ‘up-to-date’ on your Star Wars releases or canon to watch this; it would certainly help to watch the previous 2 episodes (freely available on the official Star Wars youtube) - but you can just simply start pick it up and start watching the show ‘as is’, if you wish to.

As in the previous two Ninth Jedi episodes (and many of the Visions installments overall) the emphasis of the Force is that of a mystical power from the OT-era - rather than the PT-era midichlorians, numbers of them, and ‘power levels’ etc.

Very much looking forward to more instalments from ‘The Ninth Jedi’ - or hopefully also more from ‘Visions Presents’ banner (with ‘Ronin’ rumoured - and only rumours so far - to be getting a series as well).

I just finished watching this the other night and I really enjoyed it. It’s definitely one of the better Disney+ Star Wars shows, not as good as Andor or the first 2 seasons of The Mandalorian, but better all of the other ones. I had some issues with the show, specifically that most of the supporting cast gets very little in the way of character development or focus, leaving a lot of them feeling like they’re barely present, and it also does some stuff that’s been overdone in this franchise such as the planet destroying weapon. Also the second half is definitely the better half. The being said Kara is a great protagonist and while some might fins the lightsaber concept to be silly, it’s used to great affect in the show itself, and how the characters view themselves. The action is fantastic and they really make use of the medium to do things in the lightsaber fights, especially in the final episode, that you can’t really do in Live Action. The show is also a complete experience and tells a full story, the creators behind the show have mentioned wanting a second season, but unlike say Ahsoka or The Acolyte, it actually tells a complete story that doens’t need a second season.

It’s a good show. Starts a bit too slow for my taste, but then it picks up around the third episode. I wouldn’t mind seeing some of these concepts used in the eventual X-XII trilogy.

is just fine, i already see this story before, a little repetitive, but i like kara journey and the characters is good, the animation, fights, music and the style is just as good as visions, i feel like the show has pacing and structure problems and i think it should be shorter. 6,5/10

Really enjoyed this. I can tell they were limited by budget for a lot of it, though I appreciate that they saved the budget for the second half/last third for a stronger finale rather than doing the opposite. The fights eventually reached the kind of spectacle I was looking for.

Things I dislike included the use of superweapons again, Disney’s favorite object kyber crystals again, a droid control ship early on, and several battle scenes where both opposing forces, using ranged weapons, stand 10 feet from each other with zero cover like on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones. The ship and droid designs are neat but a little bit busy for my taste. The animation earlier on and during a lot of the larger battles or space battles is stiff and less than ideal.

The show absolutely nailed the Jedi. No prequel garbage about attachments, no total extermination, an association with monarchy and nobility, engagement in politics that isn’t some FBI thing or The Senate, legitimate differences in opinion over role, adult Jedi joining on from various backgrounds, Jedi families, distinct costumes and character designs that aren’t just variations of brown robes. The Jedi aren’t the side of “no emotion” and the Sith/villains aren’t the side of “has emotion.” The Sith are a specific faction and not “every person who uses the dark side.” The villain isn’t a Sith and the silver blades/empty heart thing creates an interesting third way without falling into the trap of “gray Jedi” or “equal light and dark.” The villains aren’t an empire and they use droids but they aren’t only droids. Rival warlords are more fertile ground for storytelling than another republic or empire. This takes place in the far future but you could really set it in any time period, not because it’s generic, but because it’s timeless.

I see what people are saying about the lack of development for side characters, but I would put that down to the limited episode count, which could also be a function of budget. I’m okay with them being cool action figures for now. Hopefully we get more of this show.

I’m surprised how little attention this is getting. Anime has never been bigger culturally and there’s a large overlap between prequel fans and the type of weebs who keep track of “power scaling” etc. You would think a full blown Star Wars anime would get a little more hype even if people are disappointed by it. I would put it down to a lack of advertising and to the sheer drop in cultural relevance Star Wars has had for many years now. Or the perception that this is just a spinoff and so doesn’t matter to “canon.” I wonder if this had any amount of interest in Japan.

Totally agree about the treatment of the Jedi. It was my favorite element of the show.

They just released an interview with the Supervising Director, Series Director, and Producer of the series that goes into the production of the series, their influences and history with Star Wars, as well as an in depth discussion on what they were trying to achieve with the story. It’s definitely worth a read if you, it does include some spoilers.
