The only thing other than historical preservation that would justify the inclusion of the ‘97 versions is if George decided to radically alter the movies yet again. Like, if he gave Star Wars the “final cut” treatment like Ridley Scott with Blade Runner or George’s friend Francis Coppola with Apocalypse Now.
Having said that, Apocalypse Now is an interesting example because to my knowledge the only alteration that was done for its Final Cut was the removal of a scene that had been added for the Redux version. And yet the earlier two versions were both included seamlessly branched on a second disc.
I’ve joked about this, but it’s still not too late for George to do his “I may have gone too far in a few places” edition of I-VI. I even remember there was a rumor right before the digital versions came out in 2015 that someone had been at the ranch (or wherever) and noticed someone working on the unaltered original version of the Han and Greedo scene, thus leading to speculation that it was going to get changed back to how it was. Obviously that turned out not to be true, but meanwhile the Han and Jabba scene is the only thing other than the additional Luke and Biggs moment that Lucas ever put back into the OT. Well, that and the repurposed RotJ footage of Vader walking off his shuttle that was used for the SE of ESB. I don’t think anything deleted from when they shot it back in the day got added back into RotJ.
If George wanted to change his mind about the editorial alterations to the running time, or even go the opposite route and add even more (or redo the cg) then there’d be a much stronger argument for including the ‘97 SE.
