A general discussion thread on The Battle Of Hoth…

There’s been much discussion of Battle Of Hoth scenes on here over the years - yet no dedicated thread; so here goes…

For many of us older fans… watching Empire Strikes Back as a kid for the first time was an amazing experience. Especially given the large battle was actually at the start of the film - something not often done at the time; especially not on that scale - or in so much detail. The brave ground defence of Echo Base, snowspeeders air assault on approaching AT-ATs to protect the base’s shield generators, and finally the evacuation of the last remaining Rebels - even as Imperial troops were entering the base…

Even just seeing those AT-ATs for the first time - the sheer wonder of them and how they moved across the ground. Those flimsy looking snowspeeders sent out to combat them. And just the two fighter escorts for each Rebel’s heavy evacuation transports against the Imperial Fleet…

Personally, I did often wonder as a kid… if any Rebels that didn’t make it back for evacuation somehow survived Battle Of Hoth… whether there was another evac point, or smaller hidden outposts to try and reach - to hold up for a while until the Imperials had left the planet. Or what happened to those Rebels caught out in the open on the battlefield - always some intriguing fan films out there on that topic that are well worth a watch.

Great battle. I always thought it would be cool to see more of the ground action with the infantry, like some rebels vs. snowtroopers, and maybe give the turrets something to do other than fail to damage the AT-ATs. They probably thought it would be too chaotic and distracting for the boomer audience at the time if they showed too much complexity. There’s already a lot going on with the speeders, the walkers, and Luke so maybe that’s fair.

I love the way Luke is depicted during the Hoth battle. You get a real sense of how much he has grown as a rebel and a leader since the previous film. That’s why I find Yoda’s claim that “all his life has he looked away…” to be somewhat disingenuous given Luke’s obvious adherence to the task at hand post-ep 4.

Wasn’t Yoda talking about Anakin or am I remembering that wrong?

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

Excellent idea for a thread ! I remember seeing Empire for the first time when I was 9 years old in 1980 and a big part of what resonated with me about the Hoth battle was how real it felt to me . Like it might not have happened on this Earth but was happening on some Earth somewhere. Decades later I realized that was no accident as a lot of real life battles took place during WW 2 in Norway . A lot of behind the scenes and location photos of these scenes really look like documentary photos of a real war. And to the stragglers that got left behind on Hoth , I always loved the original Marvel Star Wars issue 78 titled Hoth Stuff , even if it was later retconned as a tale tale that Wedge told to new recruits.

No, he was referring to Luke when Luke arrived on Dagobah. I only noticed this recently - Yoda’s castigating Luke for ‘always looking to the future, to the horizon, never his mind on what he was doing’ etc etc when the truth was that Luke had clearly been perfectly ‘present’ and responsible during the three years following ep 4. They’d established a new base, Luke was doing security patrols, he was a Commander etc etc. It was only at Obi Wan’s urging that he suddenly ditched the Rebellion and went off to be a space Samurai…

Sorry, I really don’t want to derail this thread!

On another note I really love how the Hoth battle looks on 4K80. Obviously the matte lines and transparent cockpits are very much apparent, but that just goes to the ingenuity of what was being attempted back then. I also love how General Veers’ Walker takes the time to shoot that one dude before taking out the Power Generator!

I think he was talking more about Luke’s internal perspective, which is still rash and adventurous, and a little impatient if he doesn’t get his way. That’s why Yoda starts out in funny goblin mode to test Luke’s patience.

The Hoth battle has some of the smoothest action in the OT, especially the walkers, combined with the impending doom feel of it and the musical score.

I like how the Walker’s move more like animals than tanks. It makes it frightening. They look like these Giant elephant like creatures at the legs.

For years I thought there’d be a follow up to the these kind of scenes that we didn’t get to see in the films themselves, sadly not realising they were just promo shots. The Hoth opening really was a kid’s paradise of ideas and imagination in the snow.

As a person from a part of the world where it never ever snows, the Hoth battle was all the more alien and magical feeling as a kid. I had no frame of reference for the kind of cold that these rebels would have to endure all while engaged in combat. It really emphasized the feeling of heroism and derring-do for me!
