Well, I’m glad they restored the original negative back to its 1977 state. I just hope the 1997 edit was scanned and archived.

Well the '97 negatives scanned back in 2012 in 4K, so they’ve been sitting on scans for some time now. They have the means to release the '97 SEs as bonus features, as to whether they will actually put the effort in, I’m doubtful.

Irregardless we’re set for a real treat I hope. At the very least we’ll have more fuel for Despecialsed and 4Kxx

I’m just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

My movie reviews aren’t AI, they’re just written by someone who’s Neurodivergent. If you don’t like them, then simply don’t read them.

I don’t see the point of continuing to do “Despecialized” versions of the films when Disney’s officially doing it themselves finally.

Sure continue to do what you want with the SEs but with regards to the original films it’s pretty much going to be beating a dead horse outside of specific projects.

I meant if this restoration isn’t to par in any significant way

Well, Harmy has already said he’s stopped work on his projects, so yea. You’re right.

I’m curious how the new info we’re getting lines up with this old interview excerpt with David Tanaka:

Tanaka: I remember when we were working on the Star Wars restoration, that was a different process. I think we optically recreated interpositives. But in order to do this, it went through some kind of warm chemical bath cleansing. The weird thing about Star Wars was that it was made up of different film stocks, so it went through this bath and they didn’t know what would come out on the other end…

Parker: You mean if it would survive or not? ‘George we might destroy your entire film, but it’s… we think it’s going to be OK.’

Tanaka: There’s a space battle shot and a close-up on Han Solo, and the original negative is coming out of this cleaning solution and it’s just acetate.

Parker: It’s all clear. Oh no, did the bath dissolve it?

Tanaka: Yeah, it dissolved it, depending on the film stock.

Yes, the document that mentions the photochemical restoration they did either this or last year mentions that about 1-2% of the film was damaged during the 97 restoration. Everything matches.

Real or fake?? Judging from the lightsabers and the channel I’m going fake.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=efB22wsdv9E&pp=iggCQAE%3D

EDIT: The only other video on the channel is a FAN MADE trailer for The Shining so yeah most likely fake.

Nice and fun low effort fan-made trailer, that. I’m expecting something similar in style and tone for the real promo when that airs (maybe including the ‘Han Shoots First’ scene). 👍

Edit: glad to see the creator later edited the video title to reflect it was indeed a fan-made trailer.

I’m pretty sure a real trailer would utilize footage of the new restoration and not what appears to be a weird mix of 11SE, 19SE, and 4K77.
(Especially not YouTube uploads of the scenes too)

The uploader changed the title and thumbnail. Both now say Unofficial Trailer.

Over on the The Star Wars Trilogy Discord, someone got the special privilege of touring Disney/Lucasfilm and included a pic which confirms that the original trilogy has in fact been restored to its original state.

I mean… duh. They already issued a press release months ago saying the original theatrical version will be released in theaters in February 😂

To be honest, I still don’t quite understand what it means for this to be released for IMAX… just that it’s being shown on IMAX screens (so just a marketing push)? I mean, obviously it’s not filmed for IMAX, so I’m not really sure what makes it necessary to be advertised for that format.

I’d gladly pay extra to see it in a Dolby Cinema auditorium, but not IMAX.

I for one will be seeing it in a premium theater and format or not at all. So yeah that is Imax or Dolby Cinema. Not the cheap standard projection.

I mean, I’ll try see it in Dolby if I get the chance, though anything near me is probably going to sell out too fast. I’ll see what happens.

I hope it’s not a limited thing and theaters can play it as long as they want. I think episode iii 20th anniversary last year was one week only. It remains to be seen how much hype Disney will throw at the 50th even if it is wonderfully restored.

The thing I’m more scared about is if it’s exclusive to that theatrical release and not released on physical media or streaming.

Be kinda a waste to spend money on such a restoration to have it relegated to a limited theatrical release only but heyy tomorrows a different day.

Wouldn’t be too different from seeing a 70mm blowup from back in the day.

Just wanted to chime in how happy I am to see that this is finally happening. This site and the projects it spawned really changed my life and I’m glad to see all the work done here finally moved the needle towards the end goal.

I still have memories seeing this at Graumann’s Chinese in '77.
Wish Marcia would have been able to be part of this.
50th Anniversary release is tremendous.
I am holding onto my Adywan versions, however.

I think he is a bot.
