Does Maul Shadow Lord even need an edit? spoilers

This has got to be one of the tightest, strongest seasons of Star Wars I’ve ever seen. I can’t really think of anything that could be cut. Everything feels like it’s necessary to the overall story to me. I thought the first two episodes were the weakest, but I don’t know what could be done to improve them.

Anyone have any ideas?

I do think that it could be converted from a 10 episode show of ~20 minutes per episode to a 5 episode show with ~40 minutes per episode.

I also noticed toward the beginning that there were WAY too many scenes where people were telling Lawson “so are you going to call the Empire now?” and then he explained like 3-4 times why he wasn’t going to. So there’s definitely a few little scenes that can be trimmed here and there.

My opinion is somewhat different (sorry, Bored at 3AM) - and think this show would indeed benefit from an edit… whether something akin to be shortened to a ‘Tales Of The Jedi/Empire/Underworld’ 3 x 15/20 minute style edit - or a simple more straight forward 45-60 minute edit.

For me… I found the characters rather shallow, underdeveloped, and a little cliché. The animation looked great - although the direction was a little lacking in the fight scenes. As well as the story being somewhat predictable and sluggish - I struggled to stay invested with the show watching all 10 episodes of ~22 minutes (including recaps and credits) - which offered little new, fresh, or unexpected.

Not too much different to what we’ve seen many times before in The Clone Wars, Rebels, Resistance, The Bad Batch, ToTJ, ToTE, ToTU, etc. Although for fans of those shows - I’m guessing this would no doubt be a welcome continuation of those similar content.

I’m glad others enjoyed this show far more than I did. 👍

Although I do hope for the option of a much shortened / tightened edit.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Well, given that it’s a mathematical certainty that we’ll be swimming in various Maul edits over the next few years, I think you’ll get your chance to see a shorter version that might work better for you. 😉

Yeah, given Lawson’s eventual fate, his scenes could be a pretty good place to trim, although I suspect his son’s relationship with him will end up being pretty important to Devon’s inevitable romance with the kid.

Although who knows. That entire plot line might end up going nowhere interesting

I agree largely with Jar Jar Bricks. I think movie edits could work as well with some light trimming here and there.

I enjoyed it, but yes, I can see an edit easy enough. The chief scenes, Rylee’s scene with his mom could all be heavily trimmed. Some of Maul’s alone time scenes, Deven’s as well.

Some of the station scenes, on the run, there were lots, I mean LOTS of those. Easy trims. And how many times did Rook, I think her name was, have to ask Maul if he really was sure about the girl?

The main issue with editing the series into a movie is that it was very action heavy, especially lightsaber duels. If you cut too many of the character moments it will make for an exhausting experience. The main focus of my first cut was to reduce the action scenes where possible.

Are you working on an edit of it pls @smudger9?

I am. I’ve finished a second cut, coming in at 2h28. I’m currently working on the 5.1 audio mix. Hoping for a release by the end of the month.

Smudger, I am curious to see your cut list when you have the chance. The show has about 3.5 hours of runtime without the intros and credits.

I know you mentioned all those lightsaber duels. I can easily see about half an hour cut there - there were too many of them and they dragged out. It’s the other half hour that I am curious about. I only watched the show once so I lack the familiarity of what should be cut elsewhere, such as drawn out scenes and excessive or redundant dialogue.

I haven’t seen a Star Wars show yet that warrants the length and time they waste.

There were quite a few redundant scenes and unneeded plot threads.
Significant things that I’ve cut are:
Demus’ reaction to the raid on his bank.
Escape from the Police headquarters.
Most of the Pykes storyline.
Most of Riley’s scenes.
The Mandalorian revolt scenes.
A couple of interrogations scenes.
The Reena escape plan.

Having only seen half of it so far, this is what I noticed too. A lot of the scenes are just ponderously slow and repetitive. I get that they’re trying to do the Fisher Price version of Heat, but Heat (which I saw for the first time recently, insanely good) has so much else going on and doesn’t fit. It’s more than having a police guy with a criminal nemesis he’s looking for, a city landscape, and family scenes to humanize the police guy. Especially when the Empire comes in and makes all of it unnecessary. Andor is much closer, naturally.

I do appreciate the more limited cast, setting, and art style. After almost two decades of mediocrity, Filoni has finally crawled his way into making something I kind of like.

Any updates on this pls my friend?

It’s 95% completed. Final Cut and 5.1 mix done. Just a couple of music transitions to tighten and the opening pan shot to finalise. I’ve done a basic pan shot, but I’m having a play with AI to see if I can come up with something a lot better.
