'The Mandalorian & Grogu' (Upcoming Movie) - General Discussion Thread — Page 4

How much money did Disney pay for that “trailer?”

We already know this movie was going to be bad and flop hard. This advertisement just provides further confirmation. So many bad decisions in that brief clip. Oh well, I will just be on the lookout for the next Andor type of movie or show from Lucas film. Anything from the Mandoverse is dead on arrival.

Dear god make it stop. This looks awful. How many hundreds of millions did they waste on this movie.

Yeah this trailer isn’t doing it for me. This is clearly supposed to be parodying your typical car commercial you’d see on TV, which if paired with an actual trailer could’ve been seen as the marketing team having fun with the Super Bowl, but that’s not what we’ve got. As for whether or not the movie will be good, I’m looking towards the plot focused episodes of season 3 for what I think the quality of the movie is likely to be. The story episodes for season 3 were pretty good, so I’m hopeful it’ll be at that quality, and not the quality of the for want of a better word “filler” episodes of the season. I also still haven’t been convinced that general audiences have fallen out of love with the show. Sure a lot of people expressed disappointment with season 3, but it still got excellent viewership numbers and no one I’ve talked to this show, who are outside the typical Star Wars fan circles but like The Mandalorian, have expressed any loss of love for the series, which I know is anecdotal but I’m just not convinced this will flop. The main problem is that they seem to only be targeting the casuals with this film, given how the marketing seems to be rather light on anything other than Grogu looking cute and adorable.

Do we know anything about the plot of this one yet? Granted I don’t remember much of Mando season 3 at this point but I would have thought they’d release something that gives a clue as to what the movie’s supposed to be about by now…

Something about Imperial Warlords and Grogu and Din helping the new republic, and Jabba’s son is somehow involved in the movie. Not a whole lot to be honest. It’s quite vague.

Author

Oof, not promising to hear. I expect after season 3 of mando most of the audience will need something to draw them back in in the marketing. With how cinema traffic in general has been this one’s already got an uphill battle

I think it shows

Disney’s been spending too much on their movies for the past several years and its burned them quite a few times by this point, so I definitely wouldn’t expect the budget to be in the realm of thr sequels, or possibly even Solo because of the reshoot and production problems it had. But 165m does seem low for their big return to Theaters, especially with the way inflation has hit. I would expect somewhere between 200-250m would be the sweet spot for them but maybe they don’t have the confidence they can comfortably clear half a billion with the Star Wars brand anymore after what happened with Solo and the fan sentiment surrounding the sequels…

Heck, with the only exception of Andor…I would say everything they have thrown at us since the sequel trilogy has been controversial or mediocre to say the least. Rise of Skywalker was a shock…but then Book of Boba,Kenobi, Mando season 3, The Acolyte, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew…that’s five strikes in a row. Anyone who was desperately hanging on has jumped ship or has no urgency to bother with Mando and Grogu (such an awful, awful title) or isn’t even aware. Who are even the current SW fans? Disneyworld casuals who think baby Yoda is adorable?? Timelines are ALL OVER the place and Im willing to bet the “casuals” have to be reminded what they are even looking at and where it fits in.

It’s not a great time to come out with a theatrical Mando season four story arc condensed into a film. I feel like that ship sailed in 2020 when that show was very popular. Anxious to see how the movie sells…I won’t be paying to see it.

Lucasfilm can’t afford another flop.

I think the buzz for this film is nonexistent, the trailers have done little to energize fans. Star Wars is at apathy.

Compare the response to the trailers to this to the force awakens. zero engagement. not even 12 million views in 4 months. you had like 100 million in 24 hours for force awakens.

I think set expectations low, like basement floor low. And if the film surprises anyone in any regard or has some fun or merit to it or enjoyment it’s a plus.

Really what you want is 2 hours of entertainment and you don’t really care about the box office, let the bean counters worry.

Hopefully its a least worthy of a movie serial because that is what Star Wars is right. Does it have that pulp appeal to it. Is it all ages fun like Star Wars was in 1977. The Baby Yoda character is a problem for me, not a plus. Makes it seem like a kids movie. oh he is cutesy, look at him using a telescope. now we have him driving tauntauns. Please buy our Grogu toys.

Not like I’m hoping for a flop, but I do wish Mandoverse was over or winding down.

Is there any non Filoni Star Wars in the planning except for Starfighter?

For the Filoni fans they must be ecstatic, it’s all Filoni Star Wars all the time.

I think people rightfully associate Disney+ with cheap garbage now. They see right through the attempts to make this a movie when it’s more of the same. It’s a Disney+ show they’re just happening to put in theaters. The cultural moment where Mandalorian was big has long since passed. It might even bring feelings of discomfort and painful memories of Covid. The omnipresence of Baby Yoda merchandise is also a detriment now. It’s associated with boomer Facebook users who post memes with Minions on them.

Yeah there’s an undoubtedly “cheap” feel to the disney+ shows (barring Andor but that one actually did have a budget in line with the movies in addition to creators that had a plan), and it doesn’t seem like M&G is going to be an exception. Grogu shouldn’t have returned after the season 2 finale. That was the natural conclusion of that arc for me and the next season should have started something new for the Mandalorian character. I personally loved the season 2 finale and had fun with Skeleton Crew but the (non-Andor) shows were at their best in Mando season 1 when the scale was smaller and the spectacle was more manageable.

I’d love to be proven wrong and them have a good plan for what they’re doing here but I’ve already kind of written this one off in my mind. Hopefully Starfighter is better, but they really need a win NOW rather than later.

Damage control? From what I saw even Disney fans hated that Budweiser style trailer with the Tauntauns.

Williams themes X-wings and an Artoo unit. LOL. They actually put Star Wars in that 15 second trailer for a trailer.

I’m interested in the movie, but mostly because it means in another 1-2 years, I’ll get to see what Archbagel and others can make from the footage provided.

Better than what they’ve showed so far. Still feels like more of the same issue Mandalorian was having with leaning so heavy on the cute factor, though… That trick got old a while ago. Still don’t really have a good idea of what it will be about, but maybe it’ll be fun, looks like there’ll be a lot going on if nothing else.

the color granding looks better and the action scenes was more high scale than the show, other than that, its pretty meh

idk

A better trailer still not for me. The Lone Wolf and Cub influence is very obvious. Except this is a kids movie. It could be a fun throwaway little movie. But remember when Star Wars was pinnacle of entertainment and an event?

This looks like a skip it and see it on streaming or maybe pick up the 4K later kind of deal.

The trailer is finally here and it looks fine. Still don’t know much about the plot, and on the one hand I’m glad the trailer isn’t just spoiling the entire movie, but on the other hand, what’s the hook? The movie doesn’t look like it’ll be bad, but I don’t think the trailer does a good job of selling this as a film you need to see in theaters. I’ve long since stopped expecting everything Star Wars comes out with to feel like an event, and I’m fine with just having a fun looking action adventure, but not sure if this’ll really inspire people to come out to the theaters to see it.

I’d like to see more development of the story. Like, Gideon’s past and what motivates him, as well as more concrete information on why the Empire wants Grogu so badly. Lucasfilm obviously implies that it has to do with Palpatine’s resurrection, but this is never confirmed on screen. Sometimes The Mandalorian franchise seems to be heading down the same path as Bad Batch, where they kept teasing that Omega was a big deal, only to leave the audience without answers in the end.
