The new 4K of The Terminator digitally adds a blade in the shots during the eye surgery scene where there clearly wasn’t one.

Here’s something odd I noticed by complete accident. There’s this one shot of an airport in Goodfellas:

For whatever reason, the recent UHD release removes a car at the bottom of the frame.

What is the purpose of this? Was it never meant to be seen? Is it a crew car that ended up in the film by mistake? I just don’t see any reason!

How about Ghost in the Shell 1995 there was a 2.0 version that added new cgi and a redone color timing and a new mix. For the 2008 cinema reissue and blu-ray. Then when the 4K came out it reverted to the original version. And the 2.0 version was not done in 4K.

The Pianist had a few VFX changes in the 4K release, most notably a scene with a burning building and also some bombed out buildings.

They did this as the film was mastered on a 1080p DI (not even 2K) and looked poor even back then. (A post on Blu-ray.com mentions that someone saw a 35mm trailer for it as part of an arthouse cinema screening of later Adrien Brody film The Brutalist, and it looked bad even on 35mm, like switching to a DVD.)

While going back and rescanning the negatives in 4K for a film mastered on a 1080p DI is pretty admirable (for one thing, it’s something I wish Tarantino did with the Kill Bills), it’s also pretty revisionist at the same time. If The Pianist was made five years earlier, there wouldn’t be this problem.

Releasing films shot on 35mm but mastered on a 2K DI really is a “pick your poison” scenario - do you simply upscale the DI (easiest way and preserves the director’s and editor’s vision but doesn’t look as good as a native 4K scan) or find the negatives and rebuild the film from scratch? (can result in a better looking image, even if The Pianist was DNRed, but costs a lot of time and money, there’s a risk of some elements being lost and is also inherently revisionist.)

The 4K restorations of Bound, Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas change The Wachowskis’ names so it no longer deadnames them, which I find really awesome.

I remember seeing Fanboys on Pluto TV’s US servers, and it is the current Lionsgate print, and interestingly, they changed the executive producer credits, uncrediting Harvey Weinstein, probably because we all know who he is now. You can tell because the altered credits has an off feeling to it compared to other credits. Bizarrely, Lionsgate didn’t uncredit Harvey on Clerks II when I saw it on Tubi’s US servers.

Thunderball (1965) has 2 audio mixes on home video with differences in dialogue and music used. Link to the changes and home media releases with the 2 mixes: https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/search/label/Thunderball (1965). These mixes were made at the same time with Mix-A being the mix used for the original UK release and Mix-B being used for International releases like the USA. When it came to home media all 80s and early 90s releases used a UK print source until the 96’ CAV LaserDisc (Link: https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/06638/ML105199/Thunderball:-Deluxe-Collectors-Edition) where MGM decided to use their US exclusive mix from original stems which was then subsequently converted to Dolby Surround for the CAV LD and AC3 for the Final LD (Link: https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/08065/ML105655/Thunderball) and subsequent 2001 Special Edition DVD.

Mix-B is also used on the Blu-ray but with some slight differences in the LFE channel. The mono mix on the 2006 Ultimate Edition DVD does reinstate most of the changes on Mix A with some from Mix B creating a hybrid of both mixes. If you want the full story about these mixes watch this documentary which covers everything about the 2 mixes as I’m pretty much scratching the surface: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=016VIbiKvsA&t=1997s

There is also another version of Thunderball that was censored in the UK for it’s original release to obtain an A rating, where the scene of James Bond stroking a partially naked girl with a glove was cut meaning that all Mix A versions (until the CAV LD) didn’t have the glove scene. Hi. It may be a little off topic…
But I want to ask if it’s just me that the images here don’t open in any browser (+ phone)?
https://www.movie-censorship.com/
Or there is some kind of “damage” to the site itself?
Does anyone else have a problem with it? 🙂

The images on https://www.movie-censorship.com appear to be working for me, mate. 👍

Speaking of this site, I do recall that Sweeney Todd was reported to have it’s third act show more blood on the international Warner Bros. version, since it would cause the film to get an NC-17 rating in the US according to IMDb, I looked through both versions, and they seem to be the same. Movie-Censorship not including this movie on their site could mean that the uncensored international version could just be a Mandela effect.

That reads a lot like they’re mixing it up with Kill Bill: Vol. 1. (IDK how you even get those two films mixed up!) The US cut of that has a good chunk of the House of Blue Leaves fight scene in black and white to avoid an NC-17. In the Japanese cut, not only is it in full colour throughout, but it’s also extended.

It wasn’t a Mandela effect, Warner just used the same US home video master which is the R rated version. It WAS uncut internationally and that version has never been seen on home video.

Happening to me, too. Very unfortunate.

Oh. Well that’s disappointing. Help me, Arrow, you’re our only hope.
