Movies/TV officially released for free (YouTube, Vimeo, etc. finds)

Sometimes, especially with older films or cult classics, the company that owns a movie or TV show decides to post them online for free. And sometimes a single episode of a show might be posted online to entice people to buy a full DVD or Blu-ray box set. This thread aims to make a collection of all of these officially posted movies and TV shows.

I also made a similar thread for films that are available online because they have fallen into the public domain;
Public Domain Movies (YouTube, Vimeo, etc. finds)

POSTING GUIDELINES
Make sure that the video is officially released! Do not post films uploaded by random users that simply haven’t been taken down by YouTube, Vimeo, etc. yet.
Keep the thumbnail small, please. Either find a small image or simply post the YouTube thumbnail (like this). Alternatively you can PM ZkinandBonez and I’ll make one for you.
• Any additional information about the film would be appreciated, such as links to the film’s IMDb or Wikipedia page.
• Please post any relevant technical information like the runtime, video resolution, and in the case of non-English films please point out if subtitles are available (DON’T post movies if they do not have subtitles).
• Only post videos containing just the movie. i.e. no added intros, outros, mirrored videos, cropped videos, tweaked audio, etc. This means that the uploader, who does not own the film, is trying to trick the YouTube algorithm.

I discovered this show quite recently and it’s already become one of my favourites. As with many movies and TV shows in the 60’s, this was initially an attempt to cash in on “Bond Fever”, but it’s unique blend of sci-fi, avant-garde film techniques and anti-authoritarian themes made it one of themost memorable TV series of all time.

The Prisoner: Season 1 Episode 1 - “Arrival” (1967)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aA_4ziPsA4 - from the Shout! Factory YouTube channel (49 mins long - 1080p)

Synopsis:
After resigning, a secret agent finds himself trapped in a bizarre prison known only as The Village.

Directed by Don Chaffey.

Cast: Patrick McGoohan, Virginia Maskell & Guy Doleman.

Trivia:
• Some sources indicate leading man Patrick McGoohan was the sole or primary creator of the show.
• An officially licensed novel based on The Prisoner, published in 1969, refers to Number Six as “Drake”, implying that Patrick McGoohan’s character in this series is the same as in his previous show Secret Agent (originally titled Danger Man in the UK).

Before co-creating and starring in The Prisoner Patrick McGoohan played “Drake, John Drake”, and no that is not a James Bond reference, this show predated the Bond franchise by almost two years. Ironic, considering how it’s now largey remembered as a “Bond Fever” cash-in.

Secret Agent: Season 1 Episode 1 - “View From The Villa” (1960)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiFZJ_PlLVM - from the Shout! Factory YouTube channel (26 mins long - 1080p)

Directed by Terry Bishop.

Cast: Patrick McGoohan & Barbara Shelley.

I got the chance to see this film for the first time in the theater recently, and although it’s about as slow a movie as you can get, and it definitely isn’t for everyone, it’s one of those films that stays with you for days.

The so-called “Russia’s answer to 2001”. A somewhat unfair comparison as the two films are night and day. In true fashion to director Andrei Tarkovsky, his sci-fi masterpiece isn’t really a sci-fi film at all, but, like Stalker, a serious exploration of the human condition.

Solaris (1972)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-4KydP92ss&list=PL4dWJMOQ_a1Ri0jUrgVCrhwst-U0s851C&index=7 - Part 1 (1 hour 15 mins long - 1080p - Eng. subtitles)

from the FSUE Mosfilm cinema concern YouTube channel.

Synopsis:
A psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.

Directed by Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky.

Cast: Donatas Banionis, Natalya Bondarchuk & Jüri Järvet.

Trivia:
Solaris was one of the favourite films of famous American director Stanley Kubrick. The appreciation, however, wasn’t mutual and Tarkovsky supposedly made Solaris in an attempt to one-up Kubrick after he had seen 2001: A Space Odyssey,
a film which he referred to as “cold and sterile.”

I know that this forum isn’t really the target audience, but the full series and spin-off of the popular H2O: just add water is available on YouTube and even with different languages: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVIVA48Td4JUKj1yBIy_mCg It’s a well produced Australian teen show of mermaids that’s funny and good family entertainment. For such a good show with millions of viewers I’m surprised it’s fully on YT.

You never know, besides I’ve posted some really obscure old films in the public domain thread that I’m sure only I’m fascinated by, but I figured it’d be fun to post it anyways. As for why it’s all available on YouTube, I figured they might be worried that there’s not enough potential for a new audience on TV or streaming, so instead of not doing anything with it at all they decided to just upload it all online ad make at least some money from ads. Besides the YT algorithm can often recommend these type of things completely out of the blue to someone who’s shown interest in similar content.

Speaking of Australian produced water-themed fantasy series (that’s probably one of the weirdest things I’ve written); Ocean Girl (titled Ocean Odyssey in the UK) is also available on YouTube. I had a phase in the early 2000’s when I was absolutely obsessed with all things Atlantis (due to the 2001 Disney movie) and I remember being quite fascinated by this show, although I only watched it sporadically. The stuff with the kids never interested me all that much, but I remember the lore of the show being quite fascinating for such a low-ish budget kids show.

Synopsis:
The ghost of a witch returns to her place of residence before she died, a rural farm, and possesses one of the current occupants.

Trivia:
The series was brainchild of the Hammer Films producer Roy Skeggs, who had taken over the studio after it had gone into receivership the previous year, this was a marked change for the brand as their theatrical releases had been going downhill throughout the 1970’s due to their inability to stay up to speed with modern horror tropes.

OK, this one’s a bit of a cheat as you can’t find the whole short on YouTube, however, two separate official channels have uploaded both halves of this famous cartoon, so it I think it counts.

The Cat Concerto (1947)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpEfHVFilRc - Part 1 from the WB Kids YouTube channel (5 mins long)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtLpv6huG3A - Part 2 from the Boomerang Official YouTube channel (2 mins long).

Synopsis:
Tom Cat is a concert pianist who plays beautifully until he is interrupted by Jerry Mouse.

Directed by Joseph Barbera & William Hanna.

Trivia:
• Following its release, it was met with critical acclaim, and is considered one of the best Tom and Jerry cartoons. It won the 1946 Oscar for Best Short Subject: Cartoons.
• The same year MGM produced The Cat Concerto, Warner Bros. released a very similar Bugs Bunny cartoon called Rhapsody Rabbit, directed by Friz Freleng, with Bugs against an unnamed mouse. Both shorts used near identical gags, the same piece by Franz Liszt, and had similar endings. Both MGM and Warner Bros. accused each other of plagiarism, after both films were submitted for the 1947 Academy Awards ceremony. Technicolor was accused of sending a print of either cartoon to the competing studio, which then allegedly plagiarized their rival’s work. This remains uncertain even today.

Halloweens 4 and 5 seem to be in a weird state of semi-public domain on Youtube, being still held under the majority of copyright laws, but still being legally (I think) distributed by other people on the platform.

I’m not really that much of a movie purist. I really should’ve thought my name out a bit more.
