Found the time! Now, before I show the actual comparisons, I feel it’s wise if I talk about what I’ve been researching in regards to 35mm color. If you want to skip the boring stuff, the screencap comparisons will be in my next post, which will be posted very shortly.

I found out a few weeks back that there are a bunch of 35mm scans for movie trailers on YouTube. Since that finding, I’ve been watching a bunch of these trailers and analyzing color schemes and tints. I then managed to find a way to analyze these trailers with the scopes I use for color grading in DaVinci Resolve thanks to a little Linux program called VLC Media Player (Don’t worry. I’m not gonna steal anybody’s work. This was done for research purposes and research purposes only. I will not export the files online, I promise). I only got to study them in 1080p, but it’s the closest I’m gonna get to analyzing a 35mm film. Unless by some coincidence I’m able to create my very own Gugusse Roller, like this very talented individual did:

http://www.deniscarl.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=start

Still, that’s one expensive toy, and I can’t afford to make one. So this is the best I can do for now.

Okay, that’s enough talk about what I’ve been doing. Here are my findings.

Over the course of what I’ve researched, I’ve found three different film looks. The orange look, the blue look, and the pale violet look. I was surprised to find that I could get the looks of all three simply by adjusting the RGB values of the gain feature in the SDR color wheels on DaVinci Resolve. Let’s break down all three individually.

Before I begin, let me state that the trailer links you will find below are from the original creators and YouTubers themselves. I will never post or share what I’ve been playing around with online (or on my own YouTube channel, for that matter) as a means of respect to the original creators.

Also, in case some confusion occurs, yes, most of these trailers have a combination of some or all of the three looks. However, the trailers themselves often have a bias towards a particular look. So, keep that in mind.

The first look I’m going to tackle is the orange look. I was able to create this one by raising the red levels and lowering the blue levels in the RGB section of the gain feature in Resolve. Here are some 35mm film trailers that are geared more towards the orange look:

Star Wars Episode I (Czech trailer):
https://youtu.be/MZ5535zw73A

Strange Days
https://youtu.be/vK3KZiJSFHs

Inspector Gadget
https://youtu.be/ld4cYRaxVFg

Power (This trailer is mostly black and white, but the titles and credits are tinted towards orange. I checked)
https://youtu.be/qX4dhN0Oh3Q

Next is my favorite. The blue look! This one was achieved (sort of) by doing the opposite of the orange look. I lowered the red levels and raised the blue levels in the RGB section of the gain feature in Resolve. Here are some trailers that are (mostly) the blue look:

The Golden Child
https://youtu.be/buGu93tmBqY

Judgment Night (This one’s got a lot of the orange look too, but the blue scenes are a good approximation of what I’m aiming for)
https://youtu.be/TPqsPcT-gVQ

Star Wars Episode I (US Trailer. You can watch the Czech trailer for a good comparison between the two looks, although I will agree that the orange look wins in this comparison)
https://youtu.be/RnhqwRQf04A

George of the Jungle
https://youtu.be/UXoAn6a8zt0

Darkman
https://youtu.be/W8oGHvO2RgU

Finally, we stumble on the lesser known look. I call it the pale violet look, because that’s kind of the effect it brings when I see it. This one is rarer than the other two, but a few popular movies in the past did use it. Mostly in the sci-fi genre. This look was achieved by raising the red levels and lowering the green levels in the RGB section of the gain feature in Resolve. Here are two trailers that mostly took this unusual route:

The Matrix (Before it got the green color grading applied to it)
https://youtu.be/8GdG4Ryt9ro

Galaxy Quest
https://youtu.be/WwzeYUhGpB0

So there you have it! Now you have an idea of what I’m hoping to achieve with the color grading of Episode VII. Come back in a bit and the screencap comparisons will be posted.

At last, at long last, we arrive at the screencaps for my fan edit of Episode VII.

So, for starters, let me state what’s been changed in the color grading. The first thing I’ve done is remove the bluish tint in the black levels, as it wasn’t as accurate to a film look as I originally thought. The next thing I’ve done is pick one of the three looks that I’ve described in my last post. I wanted to apply the blue look, but due to Jakku and Artan42’s advice, I’m going with the orange look instead (Oh well, I suppose there’s always VIII and IX to play around with for that look). As you might’ve figured out, a lot of the blues have been desaturated this time around, but I think the results for Jakku, Takodana, and the Starkiller Base are sparkling. You be the judge.

As before, I have placed the comparisons under the spoiler tag below. The top image is the grade I had originally:

The first stage of my move begins. I will be starting work on the move tomorrow, where I will be moving to a friend’s place. I’ll try to get my computer back up and running as soon as I possibly can (I hope to get it all ready sometime next week). Then I can worry about what to do next for the move (and keep working on my fan edits when I have the time). So yes, I will be absent on this site for a bit, but I hope to return as soon as I possibly can!

Good luck with the move!

I think the regrade looks great. The orange look really helps bring out the details in a lot of places, a lot more than I expected.

The regrade looks awesome, nice work! I like your first grade better on the nighttime snow forest though; the extra blue works there. Other than that, it’s an improvement all around!

Thanks guys! Glad it looks good.

I’m gonna try one last idea before I say the color grading is complete. Here’s the orange film look again:
Episode VII Hybrid_1 6 1 T

I wanted to try combining the orange and blue looks together. So, I started by making a node for the orange look using the curves in Resolve. I raised the red levels and lowered the blue levels like so:
Episode VII Hybrid_1 6 2 T

Then, I made another node for the blue look. I used the curves again, but did the opposite of the orange look. I raised the blue levels and lowered the red levels like so:
Episode VII Hybrid_1 6 3 T

Finally, I added a parallel mixer node to combine the two looks together:
Episode VII Hybrid_1 6 4 T

My hope was that the combination would improve on perfection, but honestly, it wasn’t quite the grade of excellence I was hoping for. I suppose the faded red look that you will see in this newer combination might look good on some other movie, but not for TFA. I’m not sure the faded red suits Jakku (especially in comparison with the orange film look), and it seems like the addition of the blue makes the image look more desaturated. Still, I’ll let you be the judge. If I don’t get any responses, I’ll stick with the orange look and leave it be. But if you want to provide a defense for this newer grade, feel free to do so.

As usual, I’ve placed all of the examples under the spoiler tag below. Let me know what you think.

I like the orange look for Jakku, but the second option looks better for the non-Jakku scenes.

I understand why. I will say again that the blue film look is my favorite, and you can see part of that look in the hybrid grade during the non-Jakku scenes (In fact, I’m going for the blue look on both VIII and IX, but that’s a different topic). I’m just not sure it works well for a movie like TFA, which arguably has the warmest color palette in the sequel trilogy. I also want to honor Artan42’s suggestion on keeping Jakku orange to distinguish it from Tattooine and Geonosis, and I feel like the blue look is getting in the way of making Jakku look right (unless reddish tinted sand counts as orange).

I’m entertaining the idea of lessening the blue look so that the orange look is dominant, but I worry that it might look like an inferior version of the orange look. I suppose I’ll give it a try, but I wouldn’t expect too much from it.

Just gave it a try. As expected, it didn’t work. However, I’ve come up with another idea. I took the orange film look and made it just a little less orange-y. That is, I lowered the reds in the color wheels slightly and I raised the blues in the color wheels slightly also. The difference between the two is small, but noticable. I’ll post some screencaps when I find the time.

While I’m still accumulating screencaps, I have to throw in an update to the editing changes.

I’ve removed another piece from my edit, and this one is painful, but I think it’s necessary for the direction I’m going with this.

One issue that I have with TFA’s execution is that it’s united around the search for Luke Skywalker which, for me anyway, was more epilogue than climax. The real ending of the film, IMO, was the moment Rey snatched Luke’s lightsaber away from Kylo Ren on Starkiller Base. So, I wanted to place more focus on uniting the film around that instead.

Which leads me to the difficult choice I’m about to make. I’ve decided to cut out the late Max von Sydow’s opening conversation with Oscar Isaac. The main problem with this scene is that it orients the film around finding Skywalker too much. It also gives off the implication that only a jedi can solve this problem, which throws things off for Finn, who isn’t a jedi but gets a lot of screen time along with Rey. One dynamic I find interesting about VII is that we don’t know who the main character is. A risky decision, especially since the prequels tried that and failed, but it worked in this film’s case. It kept you guessing who was going to lead the charge against the First Order. It could’ve been Rey, Finn, or possibly even Han. But by having Max von Sydow’s character say “Without the jedi, there can be no balance”, it kinda foreshadows things too much in Rey’s favor. I don’t want to cut this scene out, especially since Max von Sydow was a ridiculously talented actor, but I think it has to be done in order for the edit to work.

So now, the only bit that remains is Poe’s “Well, she certainly is that.” when BB-8 barges in and alerts Poe to the upcoming First Order assault. This gets us into the opening action sequence more quickly. I suppose the drawback is that it might make the opening even more like Episode IV, but I think getting into the opening battle sooner does a good job of drawing you in more. On the bright side, Max von Sydow’s conversation with Adam Driver is still in (although edited).

I have altered Lucas’ visions. Pray I don’t alter them any further.

As they say in the film industry, you have to murder your darlings - if the edit works better without it, then it’s gotta go. (I know I’ll be cutting my favourite scene in Rogue One when I eventually get to that movie.)

I liked your second, not-blue grade from the 18th January post the best. It is quite warm, but that warm look + green shadows reminds me of technicolor prints of the original movie, like 4K77.

I agree, Sade. And hopefully, the differences between that grade and this new one will be minimal. The main reason I’m fixing it up some more is so that the snowy weather over at Starkiller Base is more blue than white, As per Captain Faraday’s suggestion.

Which leads me to some bad news. A friend of mine cracked my monitor while I was away. Fortunately, he’s generous and offered to pay for a new one. I’m gonna have to wait until the new monitor arrives, though. My hope is that it won’t be too long thanks to the evil empire known as amazon.com.

And yes, this is why the screencaps are taking so long to be uploaded.

It took longer than expected, but I finally got those screencaps! I’ll try to keep this short and sweet, but you know the drill.

After CaptainFaraday’s suggestion that Starkiller base’s snowy weather looked better in blue, I decided to see if I could tweak the orange look that I had already done before. Here’s a screencap of the orange film look I did:
Episode VII Blue Tint_1 6 1 T

I decided to try lowering the reds and raising the blues just a little slightly, giving more of a bluish hue than the previous grade. Here’s a screencap of what’s new:
Episode VII Blue Tint_1 6 2 T

Finding screencaps that showed what’s different was hard. Hopefully, that’s a sign that I’ve done my job. There are still differences though, and I’ve tried to find screencaps that showed the biggest differences. Some of them are good. Some of them not-so-good. Jakku looks a little more faded this time around. Starkiller Base still looks mostly white, just with a hint of blue. However, I think this new one is a good all-around sort of grade. But I’ll let you be the judge of that.

It’ll be the trade off. Jakku looks okay in either grade because sand does vary a lot but snow should always look white day (I have no idea how they manage to keep mucking up Hoth). I feel your new grade does that, ev en if I prefer the less blue version for the interior of Starkiller Base (grey matches the original Imperial interiors better).

Just tested the edit and realized that the 5.1 audio track had a few hiccups (2.0 stereo is the default track on my editing program, DaVinci Resolve, so my mind didn’t register that the audio transitions sound different in 5.1). I’m gonna work on the sound editing for the 5.1 surround track and fix those issues over the next few days. Otherwise, everything else is looking good.

Gone back and tested it again. Everything looks good, but I forgot to throw in my own end credits. So, I’ll be working on that next (When I find time in between TLJ, TROS, and my day job).

End credits are done. I had to redownload the file because of that, so I’m gonna have to test the file one more time, and hopefully, this one’s the last.

This edit is gonna contain a couple of firsts for me, too. For starters, I found out how to make chapters for the file. Or at least, I think I have. For some reason, my blu-ray player can’t read the chapter marks. But on the bright side, they work perfectly on my computer’s VLC player. Hopefully, it’s just my blu-ray player that refuses to read the chapter selections, and everyone else will be fine. Still, if the chapters aren’t acting right after it’s been released, feel free to let me know.

The other first is that I’m switching from MKV to MP4/M4V for the file container. .MP4 is more widely accessible, and because I converted my blu-ray source to an .M4V file for DaVinci Resolve, it makes little sense to try and convert it to .MKV anymore like I did with the prequels. This coupled with both 1080p and 720p versions should make my sequel trilogy edits the easiest ones to access (until I return to the prequels again, of course).

I have altered Lucas’ visions. Pray I don’t alter them any further.

I think testing is done for my Episode VII edit. I’m gonna work on finishing up my tests with VIII and IX. If all goes as planned, I’ll release all three of my sequel trilogy edits either this week or next. For now, here are the specs for my Episode VII files:
