Community Focus Threads - Index and Overview — Page 2

Glad this is being brought back! I definitely see some merit in going back through the Skywalker Saga with fresh eyes now that the Sequel Trilogy is done. I could see some slower months covering big picture stuff that is mostly discussion, where other months could be executing smaller ideas that could actually be used in edits. It might be a good idea to go back through old threads and see what were some common ideas that were never really made.

I think both of these just about nail it. I don’t want this to be ‘EddieDean’s project’ (hell, I’ve already got a huge project in the Clone Wars Refocused); I want it to belong to the community. We’ll start with movies, and those threads where I’ll do a lot of homework up front can be the backbone, but then we can spin off to focus on whatever ideas and projects the community want to collectively pick up.

Since there seems to be good interest, perhaps I’ll launch the first one soon. I think chronological order is a sensible approach for a few reasons, so Phantom Menace would be the first one.

As there have been no strong opinions on doing a ‘franchise overview’ first, perhaps we’ll just use this thread as the project index, franchise overview, and meta-commentary on how we conduct this collaboration, and it can just stay passively active in parallel as the central resource.

I’ve got more prep to do on the Phantom Menace OP, and I’ve not slept well as I had to chase my escaped trampoline down the street in a storm in the middle of the night, but unless anyone has anything specific to add regarding the approach I might just launch it when it’s ready. We can always revise the approach as we go.

Just voicing general agreement with all of this.

Indeed!

I would say, one thing that I think I probably should encourage in the threads is staying on target and avoiding the particularly radical ideas. I’m talking things like comedy versions, black and white, heavy metal, replacing the language with an alternate track and doing it all as subtitles, etc etc. Those feel to me more like passion projects to create a truly alternative experience, rather than “a Star Wars movie you could have feasibly watched at the cinema”, like TROS Ascendent.

Beyond that, I’m on the fence about things like three-in-one movies or re-dubbing whole characters, but I think I should let the community make that call.

Disagreement welcome!

When that becomes a new thread’s OP at the appropriate time, I’ll add things like common objections, different official and fan sources, commonly edited changes, unique edit approaches, etc. I’ll add information about the context of the movie which might help focus an editor on their personal priorities, and list a few different goals that other editors have had. Anything that makes the process of actually thinking up new approaches and ideas more likely to occur.

That sounds fantastic (but also a bunch of work)!

…Turns out it was! This has taken about eight hours…

I think three-in-ones are a different animal but maybe the discussions will help inform those who want to go that way. Re-dubbing aliens and droids (I have in mind Neimoidians and PT 3PO) is a great idea to help make an edit work. Re-dubbing main human characters would seem to fall more into a passion project category.

The blue elephant in the room.

This might not be the right place for this, but I wanted to have a discussion with you guys regarding some thoughts I’ve had that could potentially be used for fan edits.

Something I love about the OT films, especially the very first Star Wars film, is the texture you get from 35mm film and analog music recording from that era that no longer see very much in modern cinema. With Star Wars being a used, lived-in universe, I think the imperfections of film grain and analog saturation really added to that aesthetic. When you go back and watch the films, especially the Project 4K or Puggo Grande versions, it makes the films feel almost like an artifact or a treasure from some bygone era.

It probably makes more sense to simply modernize the OT to fit a more contemporary level of quality, but I think there is something special to that old school look that I think would help make the newer films feel more like Star Wars, strangely enough.

I would really love to explore ways to “age” the other Star Wars films to be more in-line with the Original Trilogy. I could see how a film like Rogue One could benefit from this treatment, with it’s narrative proximity to Star Wars 77. But I’d also be interested in seeing how this would work with the other Saga films.

I believe Nev has made some LUTs that has some film grained added. I might be wrong. I also know snooker had made some tests with some of her prequel trilogy edits that gave them a more grainy film look, plus remixing the audio to sound more analog. She even redid some effects shots to feel more in-line FX wise with the OT. It’s kind of ironic, but I find an appeal to actually making some of the effects worse. Perhaps trying to “age” the newer films would feel inauthentic, but on the other hand, it could be a clever way to make all the films, new and old, feel more cohesive. Would love to get some thoughts on this.

You’re not alone, Rogue. I do a lot of color grading on my own fanedits to reach that angelic 35mm film aesthetic, although sadly, I do not have the ability to throw film grain on the movies (unless I manage to save up $300 on my editing software). I’ve even looked up some 35mm movie trailers on YouTube, got Puggo Grande’s 16mm edits of the OT, and even bought a few film trailers on eBay myself so that I could study and research what a “film look” is supposed to be. It’s been a frustrating experience at times, but if you want to see where my research has gone lately, I posted my latest color grading screencaps on my Episode VII fanedit thread.

https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Star-Wars-Episode-VII-The-Eyepainter-Fanedit-A-WIPChanges-announcedWorkprint-released/id/90298/page/2

I should comment that I only just yesterday found a way to combine both the orange and blue film looks using a parallel mixer in Resolve. I’m not sure the results will be perfect, but I do plan to get some screencaps in when I’ve finished unpacking everything at my new place. So, if this interests you enough, stay tuned for that as well.

I have altered Lucas’ visions. Pray I don’t alter them any further.

…up until that part 😃

(I kid! I kid!)

It’s still a really great idea! And I’m sure a lot of these topics & spinoff discussions will still be beneficial for us radicals, even if we aren’t working on something directly related to that particular idea. Sometimes a change of pace or line of thinking can get you seeing something else in a new light. I’m looking forward to taking part!

Haha, I meant more in terms of dubbing and subbing the entire movie, rather than just single characters. I totally get wanting to redub Jar Jar and Neimoidians.

Personally I prefer to keep voices which are used in other media (especially since I’m a Clone Wars adherent, though I don’t think Jar Jar speaks in my edit), but for movie-only viewings it makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, I’d certainly be interested to hear about good approaches from three-in-ones that could help a one-on-one edit.

I feel that the audio for the OT should be based on the Laserdisc mixes, which have far more dynamic range than the Disney+/SE DVD/Blu-Ray mixes despite being stereo.

Don’t the Laserdisc versions gradually speed up over the course of the movie, though?

Only some Pan & Scan versions of Star Wars & Empire are sped up. All LDs of Jedi, The Pan & Scan CAV editions of Star Wars & Empire and all letterboxed versions of the trilogy are proper NTSC speed.

EddieDean, I’ve just come across this excellent ideas/discussion ‘INDEX’ notion that you’ve come up with, and can see that you’ve put a lot of thought and effort into your first topic descriptions which focus on THE PHANTOM MENACE movie initially.

Great stuff, and you’re laying things out very comprehensively which will prove useful as this progresses.

I look forward to seeing what gets posted on each of your individual topic threads eventually, and hope to add a few of my own ‘personally subjective’ thoughts and ideas at some point, when time allows.

Thanks for your time and efforts with this - oojason will approve, I’m sure! 😃

Huh! Interesting; thank you for explaining that.

I initially read that as CED editions and was like “wow, now that’s a deep cut.”

Thanks! It’s not intended to tread on the toes of other movie threads or the radical ideas threads, so I hope it doesn’t do that. And similarly I know there are key index threads, but seem to serve the purpose of being comprehensive lists, whereas what I’m trying to do here is put together context for editors and idea generation.

Perhaps at some point we could workshop a specific queue of dialogue we would like for specific reasons from various characters, and queue up reference material. Then, chip in for a $200 month of access to Respeecher, and appoint someone with sufficient free time during that month to do the work.

I’ve long wondered what it would take to be able to wear someone else’s voice and do things like, for instance, ‘clone’ Jason Wingreen’s performance in ESB using Temeura Morrison’s voice.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Author

That’s a great idea. I’ll maintain a list of suggestions in the OP. £200 a month is steep so we should really try to nail it- we should get tonally perfect sample voices first, then aim to get them run through the program in the first week, giving us the remaining three weeks for review and quick tweaking.

Kylo Ren dialogue for TROS, or any of the ST movies, would be a big help. I think ST Luke would be another contender, especially for TROS, since the majority of his lines with Rey you can’t even see his face.

Can’t think of anything off the top of my head, but I’m sure Anakin or Obi for the PT would be too contenders for new dialogue.
