I don’t really recall anything too special about the first one, but I could put the audio file out for it if desired, or the TinyEncode version. I don’t want to do all the work to bring it into sync though.

Very nice! Could you dial it up a little? Kylo’s is a little stylized and different than it looks onscreen. Doesn’t have to grab your full attention, but maybe a little stronger.
And I’ll include this in the cover artwork folder!

How does one add the subtitle file on Plex? If I can figure this one out, the viewing experience will be complete for me. 😃

You mean the same filename as the movie file itself, but with a special command at the end?

I just got done showing my dad, who introduced me to Star Wars, your Sequel Trilogy, Hal. He went crazy over the Force ghost sequence tonight. I’m real happy that I was able to make him happy with these edits, everyone. Well done, Hal, and everyone else who contributed with ideas and VFX.

We are all hoping we can contact jonh again.

I just caught a little somethig that might use a small change before the re-render. I love how a few tiny changes go a long way in changing Kylo’s character for the better - removing him from the conversation with Finn about Rey’s vision, and removing his line about wanting to take the Sith throne on the hangar scene. They really paint the picture of a Supreme Leader Kylo that just wants to take Palpatine out of the picture and take his resources, instead of regressing into needing to plot again to overtake a position of power.

However there’s still one remnant of that plot I caught, that is, on the now separated vision of Kylo Ren at the beggining of the film, we see the Sith throne for a brief moment. I wonder if it might be better to change this, as to me it signals Kylo’s interest in the throne, which we are trying to distance away from, making the throne only relevant to Rey’s struggle. I’m thinking it could just be changed to a shot of Palpatine, who we hear commanding him to kill Rey.

I also had this thought. But you have to remember that this vision is coming directly from Palpatine. It’s not a visual display of what Kylo himself actually desires. And the beginning of the movie makes it clear that Palps “wants” to give him the throne if he does what he asks. Of course, that’s not what would happen, but it’s what he’s enticing Kylo with.

It’s more of a scenario in which Palps thinks Kylo wants one thing when in reality he wants something else. That is admittedly a bit complicated so your idea has its merits.

I think it’s meant to be more of an overall vision triggered by tapping into the dark side, similar to what Rey experiences first, the words we hear from Palpatine are what he already said before. And at least in this version Rey’s vision can’t be coming from Palpatine, since he wants Rey dead for real to “end the Jedi”, it doesn’t make sense that he would be stoking the flames of her inner darkness.

Moreover, I think the main purpose of the visions, specially in splitting them up, is to set up each character’s motivations and their journey throughout the film. And as I said before, changes have been made so that the Sith throne is only relevant to Rey’s journey. I guess you could rationalize the vision as Kylo rejecting the throne as he refuses to kill Rey, but I think it’s better to just outright remove any indication that Kylo would need or even want to overtake Palpatine’s position, when he just spent the entire last movie struggling to overtake the position of Supreme Leader.

I definitely don’t disagree, it just isn’t extremely important to me is all. If this is something Hal wants to look at before releasing the fixed v2 that would be neat.

I can imagine having up to 8 minutes of fun finding the right shot to replace the throne with in that vision, so consider it done.

Very much on that note, it looks like I’m going to totally have to redo the FCPX grading process, since relinking files is not working. Should take probably a good hour or so, so not a big deal. The danger is, of course, fixing my mistakes but then making new mistakes.

My 2 cents would be to replace it with the Star Destroyers rising out of the ground (unless that shows up elsewhere).

But I’m sure you’ll come up with something cool!

Maybe you could use two frames of the Sith Star Destroyer emerging from hyperspace (from the Kijimi destruction scene that has been removed). Or hopefully something more interesting 😄

I thought it could be replaced with a shot of the fleet as well, as that would be Kylo’s new motivation, though I just thought a quick shot of Palpatine would be more straightforward.

Fleet sounds good to me! Just performed the grade again (just applying skenera’s LUTs to varying degrees). Just need to tweak the audio side of things a little more, hopefully tomorrow, and have Ash do new DTS encodes and then I should be good to re-render and reissue things for a fully complete V2.

I noticed another subtitle error: in the hangar revelation scene the subtitles don’t reflect the change of Kylo’s sentence about the dyad. When he says, they’ve “become” a dyad in the force, the subtitles still state that they “are” a dyad.

That being said, I finished the rerun of all the sequel movies yesterday with my wife and we highly enjoyed every one of them! Especially the cleaned up motivations of Palpatine, Kylo and Rey were so much better in v2, even so that my wife - who only watched v1 with me one time last year - noticed it as one of the best things about this edit! When v1 let me made my peace with the movie itself, the extra work for v2 let me made my peace with the idea of Rey Palpatine. So thank you everyone, who participated here - it is truly an awesome achievement in fan editing, turning one - if not the most - disappointing cinema experience in my life into a thoroughly enjoyable one!

I finally sat and watched V2 with my wife, who saw the theatrical release on its premiere, hated it, and never watched it again. Her comments:

“What you guys did was incredible. Given what you had to work with, you took a plotless mess and made it into something that made sense. All of your additions in the third act were so good, especially the ending - having Ben as a Force Ghost and the better line delivery makes the ending actually work, and I never thought I’d say that about “Rey Skywalker.” As an ending to all nine films in the saga, it gets it right now and I like it.”

She also commented on the colour grading, in particular the scene on Ahch-To, which she said looks beautiful now. She didn’t know which parts I’d worked on, and she even said while watching it “Oh that’s so much better!” at the puppet show and the “I am a Jedi” line. She didn’t even realise the Knights of Ren, the purple saber, or the fleet comms chatter were edits until I told her afterwards.

For me personally, it’s gone from the theatrical release being the only Star Wars movie I actively dislike to being a movie I actually really like. I even feel okay with Rey Palpatine; the way it’s been carefully massaged into better shape is emblematic of how literally everything is quietly improved throughout.

It’s kind of staggering what a good job this whole community has done, and Hal in particular for steering the ship and doing all the convoluted back-end editing to bring it all to life. It’s like a completely different movie.
