How is it going the V2?

There are just a few things being worked on, after which point all I’ll have to do is encode and upload.
These are:
- Removal of Rey’s milky eyes (Nev)
- About 4 or 5 shots of the crackly saber (Luka)
- German language track (redditor KetchupGore; wouldn’t let this one hold things up, though)
Haven’t heard from Nev in about two weeks and last I heard from Luka it may be next week before he could start work on the shots.
So, the outstanding items are few, and that’s about all the light I can shed on things. I will say, though, [REDACTED; let’s not spoil things].

Thanks Hal. Hope everything is going well. I remember that V2 was planned to be released today or at end of the year. I often read this thread and I was a little bit worried because nobody wrote from 13th December. Anyway V2 will replace V1 on drive?

It will, yes. That’s the current state of things. 12/20 suddenly came up as a goal when the kewlfish saber footage was discovered by Master Lawdog, but it only would’ve happened if the relevant people happened to be able to just strap right in and do the work immediately. Real life says otherwise and so it’ll be released as soon as I have those bits in hand. Now you know everything I know.

If anybody is even remotely skilled at deepfaking I’d imagine that dark Rey’s eyes could be taken care of rather easily. Yes, you’d be deepfaking Daisy Ridley’s face onto Daisy Ridley’s face but based on what I understand the eyes would be normal again once finished. Might be something I’ll look into myself eventually if it’s all we are waiting on.
It’s also worth looking into for the brief young Leia appearance in the flashback. Luke looks fine but Leia is definitely in the uncanny valley like her appearance in Rogue One. A simple deepfake should fix that.

They didn’t use deepfakes for Luke and Leia, they used footage from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi for that scene, but I see what you mean.

Actually Luke was footage from the OT, they had Carrie’s daughter do young Leia and used CGI that’s why it looks a little strange.

Huh. I stand corrected. Guess I have a bad memory.
Anyways, my point about Rey’s eyes still stands. It would be a 1 second deepfake using the same face as the source so I really can’t imagine anything going wrong.

I don’t know how deepfakes work, but I think it needs the info on the eyes to overlay the ‘new’ eyes, it might have a hard time with the white eyes (if it gives her pupils at all). I mean a lot of deepfakes I’ve seen struggle with having wobbly eyes as it is, even when the original footage has regular eyes, seems like it’s the hardest part to get right.

I think EBSynth would be more appropriate for the eyes thing.
Luke and Leia look like CGI because of the compositing; they end up with a “floating head” effect. Billie Lourd did provide the physical performance onto which the Leia footage was pasted, though.
Is there seriously only one thing left until the final cut is locked off?? 😮

Deepfaking is easy but it just takes a powerful computer and around 30 hours for the AI to learn a face.
EbSynth is the easiest program to change eyes as you only need 1 frame and it works out the movement with in an hour. It’s very temperamental and can be glitchy but you can always mask out the errors and just use the eyes.

Been a hell of a year, alot of amazing people worked on this and i was honoured to just watch all you guys do your thing over the year. I can’t wait to show people this edit when its done.
I was thinking though - how about a mini doc about it on youtube? Hal your commentary tracks are great and id love to see you break down the edits for the outside public and why those edits were made.
