Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 92

Absolutely. And yet I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d praise it if a fan did it.

So, I know a lot’s been done of piping in some other dialogue for Kylo Ren during the big reveal scene on the Star Destroyer with Rey accurately reacting to it.

However, has there been any fan edit that’s done anything to replace Palpatine’s Voices line in the beginning with something else? Adam Driver’s reaction during that scene is very… muted, so I feel it would be easy to put in something else to replace it. Maybe even parts of Palp’s Fortnite message? IDK.

Obviously a crappy quality video but it works fine as proof of concept for a totally doable (if time-consuming) change. My question is why you’d give him a lightsaber in the first place, and I think the only answer is to make him a Jedi. That poses the question of how you would achieve that in the rest of the films.

What if Palpatine in TRoS is just a personification of the dark side, and not Palpatine himself? It takes the corporeal form of Palpatine just because of the galaxy’s shared trauma of this one dude.

You could do it maybe in one movie that combines and changes the sequels.

Yeah, that’s a pretty obvious way to get rid of Palpatine surviving, and one I recall being discussed in the past. Shouldn’t be too hard with lines like “All the Sith live in me” or whatever it was.

Ooh I like that. Idk why but the original (him throwing it over his head) makes it out to be more of a joke than it should be.

I wonder what that clip would look like if it was sped up to real time?

I’m pretty sure that take was discussed back in the day in regards to Hal’s edit. I think it was played with, but the timing/speeding up of the shot didn’t feel right or something. At normal speed I think it happened a little too quickly or something. Maybe someone could try it again though.

It’s a joke that lands really well though. It doesn’t really detract from the overall tone of the movie. I prefer that take to this one but I can see how some people would prefer this one since it’s less jokey and dismissive. It’s worth noting in slow-mo, so the speed will need to be adjusted.

See, I actually think this alternate take is even more jokey than the original.

The theatrical feels like a joke because of context. The music builds up then goes silent, with a silly “whoosh” sound effect, then Rey boggles at it like she’s Ernest. Hal’s edit shows that just by having the music continue unbroken with a subtle and organic sound effect, it works fine - and just goes to show what a damn fine actor Mark Hamill is, in my opinion.

That said, I’m still very interested in the new clip, if for no other reason than it’s something new to mess with in TLJ, which I thought had been exhausted after four years.

I swear they missed such a golden opportunity by not including the saber toss in TFA. Would’ve been absolutely hilarious and completely out of left field to have Luke throw the lightsaber away comedically and immediately iris to credits, then let people speculate about it for two years. Would’ve been fantastic.

Like anything, it’s probably doing the rounds as each wave of new people stumble across it. I’d never seen it before now, but then, I’ve never watched the special features of TLJ on Bluray.

I wonder how feasible it would be to make 3PO’s arm red in TLJ and TROS to match with TFA?

In short. Mask, track his arm in all his shots and change hue to red.

I would definitely have preferred for his arm to be red in TLJ. There’s barely any time gap between the two films that it almost comes across as a continuity error.

It’s much more believable for it to go back to normal in TROS since there’s an entire year there.

The only issue with colour changing it (which would take a lot of rotoscoping, I think) is that the red is a matte colour, not shiny and reflective like the gold.

Still, if anyone changes his arm to red for TLJ, I’d use it in an edit.

It’s not a continuity error though. He gets a new arm at the end of TFA:

(Or maybe you mean it comes across as one anyway since you only see it in one shot)

Yup. I just never noticed that. I wonder if Rian requested it be changed back to normal.

From the TFA commentary track:

J.J. Abrams said:

“Anthony Daniels so hated the red arm that he had, that at the end of the movie I gave Threepio his golden arm back.”

Also in Threepio’s first scene he says he “must get his proper arm reinstalled.” So there is a little setup to it.
