I don’t feel the need to add a sound effect for its own sake, so the benefit of doing so is to have it eclipse the seam of the change in dialogue. It can be more subtle of a sound even, to my mind. Hopefully when its all done the sound effect can be sent to me separately from the rest of the mix.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Can one repost the scene prior to the “added” lightsaber sound. Im curious to “hear” the seam (if i can) and it could be good to brain storm what kind of sounds to use to mask it.

(Just have Palps say SENATE! that was cut out from Hals LOE 😉)

This was my attempt from a little while back. I don’t think it’s terrible, but I did want to try working it a little more to see if it could be made a bit smoother. I know we’ve also talked about emphasizing the “am” more, but that word is unaltered from the theatrical mix, so I don’t think that part will be a huge issue in the final mix.

It still sounds like she’s saying “I’m a Jedi.”

Sounds like she says Im a Jedi too, so at least for me … it sounds fine. As for any seams … I am not hearing it. Lol. I guess Im easy to please on this one?

Unless she’s saying, “I… am a Jedi.”

Well I’ll be…I just double checked the subtitles on Disney+, and apparently the original line isI’M all the Jedi.” All this time, I’ve thought it was “am all the Jedi.” Go figure.

Not that it really matters, I suppose. “I…I’m a Jedi” and “I…am a Jedi” both work fine grammatically. The big hurdle is making sure the reconstructed “a” in the new line sounds un-garbage-y.

Maybe its just in my head, but I feel like Faraday’s sounds slightly clearer/cleaner.

Yeah idk if it’s just the ignition sound that was added but it sounds much more like she’s saying am a Jedi in that clip.

The dialogue in my clip has been altered from the version Sherlock posted; I mixed together the phrase “am a Jedi” from a few different sources, but in blending the phonemes to get the word “am”, there’s a slight hum from the crossfade which is unavoidable (it’s simply a side-effect of how blending separate pieces of audio works). I hoped the lightsaber hum would be enough to render it unnoticeable.

Here it is without the lightsaber.

I also appreciate the awkward close-up of Palpatine’s dumb face.

I’ve just had another idea that I want to try, watching it back. There’s a huge gap between “I” and “am a Jedi,” and by the time it gets to “am a Jedi” my brain has sort of lost the priming to hear it as flowing on from “I”, which makes it easier to hear as “I’m a Jedi” to make sense of it. I want to try and bridge that gap by taking the “am” and placing it over one of her big pants of exertion, so it goes “I”… “am”… “a Jedi” instead. This would also mean the slight hum on “am” is hidden by the theatrical soundscape. It just depends on a) the lip sync (but I’ve found you can get away with a surprising amount when it comes to lip sync looking right), and b) how it actually sounds in practice.

Hopefully I can try it out sometime over the weekend.

Why not go with “I am nobody”? Someone implemented that, no?

I think it would work better than a(ll) jedi.

Mr. DominicCobb implemented that in a test clip for his own TRoS re-cut. You should definitely check that out, because it’s as seamless as it can possibly get! 😉

Honestly I wouldn’t be mad if the line was used just like that without the saber ignition, it sounds very good. But I think the ignition works too if it can be integrated better.

I cannot wait to watch this when it’s all assembled and completed and the Rey nobody cut is out, this final scene is actually so good now! Good job everyone!!!

This works too. Really good.

Yeah, I saw it, u right, that was his clip. It was seamless and sounded much better than I am all the/à jedi

I think the version without the obvious ignition works, because she clearly ignites it on the upswing. But I’d still punctuate that version with the beefy PWOMP as she brings it up, in that case, as the current version still feels too subtle.

It’s definitely very good (I asked Cap to send me his original audio so that I can mix it into a new version I’m working on), but there’s still some noticeable audio distortion happening on the seam between “am” and “a”. Maybe I’m just hyper-aware when it comes to this line, but it’s definitely there. It almost sounds…I dunno, a little “Donald Duck”-y for a split second?

That said, it’s still very impressive work. I know first-hand how much of a nightmare this line is - the tone of voice, the speed of delivery, the mushiness of the phonemes… none of it lends itself well to editing. I’m hoping that combining both of our clips will make the line just about perfect.

I feel it too, but i think it can only be REALLY noticed when looked out for, it doesn’t stand out much, it’s the best so far and i think it worked really well. Of course, i don’t doubt you wizards are able to pull a even better one than this.

Also, i like the lightsaber sound, but now i wonder if is still necessary, perhaps if better blended now that the “I am a Jedi” is clear for everyone. But at the end of the day, i think it’s up to HAL to decide what he prefers.

That’s really really good! I think the line sounding faintly altered for a split second to those with a sharp ear is a lot less distracting than an out of place sound effect. I doubt a regular audience would pick up on anything among the humming of sabers and lightning blasts. You really have to be looking out for it to notice anything, it’s still hard for me to hear it even playing it back over and over.
