Starting work on the rest of the sound editing. I found some more droid sound effects to remove from the opening action sequence and even deleted a shot since it stood out as pointless without the sound effect. I like what I’m hearing so far, but I’ve still got a ways to go in the sound editing for now.

I’m happy to say that I’m halfway through sound editing now. Turns out that working on the dialogue first, and fixing up everything else later forced me to edit the sound using all 6 (or is that 5.1?) channels. I’m at the crucial Palpatine/Windu lightsaber confrontation at the moment.

I’m going to have a busy Memorial Day at my paying job, but I think there’s a good chance the sound editing will be complete next week.

Just about done with the sound editing. I’m going to give the edit a watch to see if any other issues pop up and add some finishing touches.

Found some more issues with the color grading. Particularly in the beginning of the edit, since I was doing a lot of experimenting at the time. Unfortunately, I still managed to find some skin tones that looked… Off. I’m looking for ways to correct the issue, but my corrections have brought up a difference or two. I guess I have to show another screencap for this one.

Here’s a shot of Anakin that shows the skin tone problem I’m talking about:
Episode III Skin Tone Issues_1 17 1

Here’s the correction I made so far:
Episode III Skin Tone Issues_1 17 2

As you can see, the reddish tone is gone from the corrected image here, but now my concern is that I’m pushing it way too much towards yellow. This might look good for an older film (I could imagine a color grade such as this for Apocalypse Now, one of my all-time favorites), but for a Star Wars movie… I don’t know.

I’ll post an update when I’ve come up with other ideas to fix the grading.

I think I’ve come up with a solution, but I don’t think it’s one that everyone is going to like. Unfortunately, I have to throw in some more screencaps in order to illustrate the good news (and bad news) about what I’ve changed. I’m only showing off three examples so that this post doesn’t get any longer than it has to.

Let’s begin with my earlier post. Here’s the correction I made originally:

Episode III Opening Battles Issues V_1 18 1

Here’s what I did to fix the overuse of yellow:

Episode III Opening Battle Issues VI_1 18 2

What I’ve done here is set the black and grey areas more towards the green side of things, giving the edit a yellow-green tint instead. This does fix the skin tone issue I’ve been having lately. However, this also means that the teals are beginning to come back. The next two examples will demonstrate this a little more.

Here’s the shot that begins the Count Dooku confrontation again, but with the correction I made originally:

Episode III Opening Battle Issues III_1 15 1

Now here’s the latest change:

Episode III Opening Battle Issues IV_1 15 2

This is where you can start to see the cyans coming back again, specifically in that pesky background. I will say that I do like the greyish look here more than the previous yellow tint, since it reminds me of the imperial greys that were common in the original trilogy. However, where things become a problem is when we see the back of the room.

Here’s the shot of Count Dooku approaching Obi-Wan and Anakin. Pay attention to the wall in the background:

Episode III Opening Battle Issues I_1 14 1

Now, look again:

Episode III Opening Battle Issues II_1 14 2

You can see the orange and teal effect beginning to sneak its way in here. While it’s nowhere near as problematic as when I first started working on the color grade, and it comes with the benefit of looking more grey-ish this time around, it’s still there.

This, for me, is the catch-22 I’m dealing with for the color grading. On the one hand, I don’t want the skin tones to look overly red, but if I fix it, I have to deal with a not-so-smile-inducing orange and teal appearance. The challenge I’m facing is finding the right balance. I think I could use a second (or third) opinion right now, because I’m not sure how else to improve it.

While I’m still debating how to approach the color grading, I think I will use this opportunity to work on writing the list of changes as well as start work on the trailer. Be on the lookout for some announcements over the next few days.

I still haven’t had time to watch the workprint, but I’m just chiming in so you know I’m still following the technical details you’re going through in the thread, even though it’s above my head in terms of contributing anything useful to it.

That’s okay. All that’s going on at the moment is that I’m trying to find a good balance in the color grade between accurate skin tones and keeping the grading from going full orange and teal like so many present-day movies often do. It’s tricky, but worth it.

On the bright side, I found that I can save more time by grading the timeline instead of the individual edits on Resolve. That way, I don’t have to spend days color correcting every single edit I’ve made while also ensuring consistency across the entire movie. So there’s a good chance I might be able to fix the issue sooner rather than later. I still have to watch the edit in full to see if I’ve missed something, but I’m feeling confident in the results.

I never did much colour correction other than fixing big obvious differences between shots, but I remember the people who were very meticulous with it would usually apply a standard grading across a whole scene, then go in and tweak individual shots for consistency. That was with raw footage, which I realise is different than working with footage that’s already been graded and finalised, but I figure the same principle would apply.

The more detailed explanation is that you start the color grade with what is known as a Look-Up Table (LUT), and then you color correct it. I tried this back in Episode I, and used a Blackmagic Design 4k Film to Extended Video v4 LUT on the edit, and at the time, I thought it looked amazing. But when I watched the edit on my HDTV, I discovered that a lot of the darker scenes were impossible to see. Even after readjusting, I still had a hard time brightening up the image so that the smaller details could be made visible. I scrapped the LUT, learned the value of using scopes, and I’ve done most of my work using the color wheels and curves on DaVinci Resolve. After I finished Episode II, Resolve got an update from 16 to 17, and now I’m using HDR color wheels for Episode III. I’m really enjoying these new color wheels, and they’re a vast improvement over the old ones.

Anyway, I think I’ve come up with something. I have a long work day tomorrow, but I’ll see how the color grade looks the day after.

After playing around with the color grading some more on the timeline, I think I’ve found a good enough balance between the red skin tone issues to the left of me and the orange and teal issues to the right. It’s not perfect, per se, but I think it’ll do for now. Perhaps I’ll work on correcting any color issues in future versions, but for now, I think this looks right.

Under the spoiler tag, I’ve included a bunch of screencaps throughout the whole edit. The top image is the 2011 blu-ray release. The bottom image is my color grade.

We’ll start with the opening sequence first.

So, there you have it. I think the color grading is complete for now. Sound editing is as good as it gets. I’ll work on writing down the list of changes and begin work on the trailer soon. I might also see if I can do a commentary on my new computer. However, that might delay this edit even further, so I think I’ll save it for when I work on updating my entire prequel trilogy (Makes perfect sense to start with I, then II, then III, instead of III, then I, then II).

 (Edited)

Just spent all day writing down all the changes. In total, the final running time is at 98 minutes. A total of 6 minutes’ worth of deleted scenes have been added. In total, I have removed 48 minutes from the original version. A lot shorter than I expected, but I can’t complain, since my first two fanedits are also around the 90-minute mark as well. 98 minutes is appropriate enough for my fanedits. So, without further ado, here’s the list of changes under the spoiler tag. As is the case with my previous two entries, - means deleted, + means added, and / means it’s been edited differently.

I will be starting work on the trailer next week. My Dad’s birthday is coming up this weekend, and I’m afraid I’m forbidden to skip the party, even for this edit. My apologies, but the family isn’t gonna let me work on things. I’ll try to work on it as soon as I can, though.

Assembling the footage for the trailer. It might take a couple of days, but I’m working on it.

Just reduced things down to about 20 minutes’ worth for the trailer, which is plenty of footage for something that will be only 2 1/2 minutes in length. Also doing a little something in Blender for the trailer which I will not reveal. Currently taking a small break and watching episodes of Samurai Jack for the time being.

Bad news on the trailer. I just found out that I accidentally made a copy of the film that is stereo only. The main reason this is bad is because it makes it harder to separate dialogue from the soundtrack and sound fx. I’m re-uploading a 5.1 version of the file right now, but this means the trailer is gonna be delayed some more. My apologies for the inconvenience.

Other than that, I’m gonna be downloading and testing the MKV file to see if it works on my HDTV. If it does, I’ll be sending out those PM’s. I’ve got a busy weekend, but I’m hoping to get the edit sent out next week.

Busy weekend is over. All the pieces I need for the trailer are ready. Just started (or restarted) editing the trailer.

I will also be watching my edit tonight to see if everything is ready for release. If it is, I’ll be sending PM’s very soon.

…And yes, I am still working on the trailer. I just didn’t feel the need to keep holding back the edit until the trailer was uploaded seeing as everything else is finished for the time being.

I will be going back to my I and II fanedits, and focus on updating and remastering them with my blu-rays once the trailer for III has been uploaded.
