I don’t think having one Palpatine line makes it obvious that Palpatine is the one talking to him. I mean, we would hear Palpatine, Vader and Snoke, so arguably Vader (or the dark side) is just showing him a vision of different voices and events. It could arguably be just frame it as a memory of Vader’s, when Palpatine said that to him in ROTS. I also think Palpatine’s line is sort of important to contextualize Kylo’s belief of the Jedi philosophy being destructive to stability and order.

But, alternatively, you could potentially use these Vader’s lines instead:

(Construct this line) Vader: Destroy the Jedi.

Vader: End this constructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy. It is your destiny…

Wanted to share an old idea I had regarding the Kylo vision.

I think it would be interesting if we actually gave Kylo a vision when he prays to Vader’s mask in TFA. Basically, it should illustrate “The Power of the Darkness” and provide some insight into Kylo Ren’s motivation to join the dark side, whether it be for power, order, or something else.

I don’t necessarily have an idea for specifics, but I do have two ideas in mind. At some point, it would be cool to see a shot of Anakin, exactly like this from the ROTS teaser, except Anakin’s face could transform like this concept art.

This was always an appealing piece of art to me, and this would be a clever way to incorporate it without having the lore issues of having a schizophrenic Anakin/Vader Force spirit. I have been considering incorporating Anakin’s Force ghost into The Rise of Skywalker somehow, and I think it would be nice to somehow establish who Anakin is/what he looks like within this trilogy, because if you’ve never seen the other films you might be like, “Who is this guy?”

Secondly, this would be another opportunity to foreshadow Palpatine’s connection to Ben Solo, Snoke, and the mask of Vader. I imagine you could have Vader dialogue since TROS implies Kylo Ren has heard Vader speak to him (although it was in fact Sidious). You would also get a nice parallel between Rey and Kylo, both receiving visions that push them forward on their journeys, one from the darkness and one from the light.

I’m glad you guys like the Kylo’s dark side vision idea! I wasn’t really coming at it from the direction of mocking Kylo, but I think the fact Kylo was being manipulated would become more apparent by the time we get to TROS. I think it is a great way to get insight into how and why Kylo joined the dark side. I like the idea of Kylo thinking he is doing the right thing in his own mind. Kylo has been led to believe that the Jedi perpetuate a cycle of war that has been going on for a thousand generations. He believes it is his destiny to end the cycle, but he must sacrifice everything to be strong enough to fulfill it.

I also think it makes it interesting that both Kylo and Luke have come to the conclusion that the Jedi Order must end, but they have two different ideas for what should replace it. Unfortunately that doesn’t really go anywhere, and we seem to end with no new insight into how things will be different, but what can you do?

But like y’all said, I guess it is just a matter of isolating those lines and working from there.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to show Luke’s lightsaber retracting in the final Academy flashback. To make the point of the scene more clear and dispel the misreading of the movie of Luke trying to kill Ben for having a bad dream. He’d have to re-ignite it when Ben attacks him, too, of course.

Luke clearly changes his mind about killing Ben at the last minute. And it needed to be on so Ben would realize, “Oh shit, Luke found out that I’ve turned to the dark side and he was gonna stop me!”

I have an idea about TLJ: during the first lesson scene, Rey not only sees the entrance of the cave, as usual, but also sees the mirror itself.

Not really sure this is needed to clarify the vision, after all Luke immediately infers the cave offered Rey something she craved.

Well, Jedi can sort of read minds. It does muddy Kylo Ren a little in that scene, but I think clarifying what’s going on with Luke is worth it. Because misreading the movie to thinking that Luke was killing Ben for having a bad dream is a bigger deal than not immediately getting how Ben knows what’s going on.

This issue with this would be removing the green glow on Ben. Otherwise this is an excellent idea.

This might be tedious but it’s definitely doable.

That’s a fun idea. Definitely a job for EBSynth. Any specific extras in mind?

Had a go at making it. It’s a little rough and I think someone who’s more skilled (and also has access to better toys) than me might be able to do better. I just kinda cut out a shot to avoid the problem of the glow. It makes the continuity a little weird but it’s not so bad.

I painted out the green reflection in Kylo’s eyes but not from Luke’s eyes. To be honest, it’s because I didn’t notice you could really see it in Luke’s eyes that late in the shot until after I uploaded the youtube video and I didn’t take it down because I can’t guarantee I’ll have the same fixation on this when I got home from work tomorrow to fix it and reupload lol. Doing it would probably sell the retraction more, though.

I used EBSynth because painting out the reflection for 78 frames would be tedious, and I feel like there was a bit of a drop in quality because of that? But it’s probably no longer even visible thanks to youtube compression. Regardless, I’d probably do them all manually before ever putting them in a finished fanedit.

Speaking of which, I never noticed it before, but the sound in this scene is great.

That’s nowhere in the text of the movie. But I believe it would be easy to contextualise events so that it unequivocally reads as such, rather than one of many post-facto surmises.

It’s called an inference. It does not have to be spelled out to you.

Yes. I’m suggesting making that inference, one of many possible interpretations of the text, into the actual text itself. Leia and Holdo never talk about spies, they talk about following orders and being heroes.

To return to the key topic: has anyone hunted for any useful audio from either Dern or Fisher? Or would I be the first to go looking for this specific purpose?

My point is that it isn’t necessary to spoon-feed inferences to the audience and would just across as… [shudders] pandering - it would be the equivalent of having Kylo Ren go up to the screen in TFA and tell the audience that his injury is the reason he lost to Rey. I feel it’d be very on-the-nose.

I’m not sure what your point is. And my point was from a storytelling perspective, not an in-universe perspective.

It’s the audience’s fault for misinterpreting the movie, not Rian’s fault. Most Star Wars fans, including prequel haters, don’t pay attention to any of the movies released post-RotJ and are certainly unaware of this storytelling technique called “inference”.
