^Love that idea. Brilliant.

With a lot of this stuff that’s actually within the realm of what I can do, I almost wish there weren’t so many talented people with more ready access to free time around here! 😉

And Dat_SW_Guy, here’s the sequence as it stands. We can swap order of shots and stuff like that, but I’d say the total duration from opening shot to closeup of Kylo is locked down:

Honestly, the solution I keep coming back to would be to comp a brand new shot of 3PO into the sequence. That may well be a pipe dream though - I personally have no idea what I’m doing with effects like this, so unless someone else is willing to lend a hand…?

Also, happy Star Wars Day, all you crazy characters! I’m so thrilled to be on this journey together.

If someone is able to make a clip like this work, that seems like a great idea! I’ll have some more retimed attempts up tonight with the original footage.

I believe there was a shot of the engines as well. You can cut to the exterior after the shot of Pryde, and then to the shot of the engines to imply they are on their way before it cuts back to Rey and crew.

That would actually work really really well for an idea I had for my edit - if it was possible to overdub Pryde’s line “Tell him we’ve found our spy,” with something like “Prepare to depart” without it completely throwing off the lip sync, I wanted to put the Shooting Hux scene after Pryde’s conversation with Palpy. Then, Pryde basically goes off and shoots Hux in a coup, in order to combine the First Order with the Sith Fleet.

Your idea would really help to sell that!

I like that idea, Sherlock, but I wonder if that’d be weird to actually have sequenced that way.

Scenes and scenes and planets have gone by, and Hux just now tells him “it was a coordinated incursion.”

I do like the idea of slowing down with an establishing shot after we settle in with Lando, and possibly at the end of that scene, with engines lighting up.

The establishing shot is a no-brainer. I tried putting the engines shot at the end there but I’m not very good at editing so it didn’t sound right. I think it could definitely work, though.

The other place I was wondering if it could have an establishing shot was the “Shall we destroy the city?” scene with Kylo. It’s right after Babu Frik. There is another shot in the Star Destroyer reel that could work for an establishing shot there.

Oh yeah, it’s an idea more for my own edit, where I’m hoping to remove the Hux Spy stuff entirely. I was probably going to just remove Hux’s line there as well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Either that, or just move the Pryde/Palpy conversation up to right after the Gang™ escape? I dunno. It’s not something I’m actively going to fight for in this edit either way.

And - this may sound blasphemous - but I actually don’t really like the establishing shot before the necklace scene? The scene is so quick that it basically feels like the film is cross cutting between Kylo’s ship and Lando’s sex dungeon. An establishing shot is usually reserved for a whole scene - does a cutaway warrant that? We’d basically be spending more time in the establishing shot than in the meat and potatoes of the scene.

Maybe it would feel better if it was moved to after Lando crossbows the trooper? They start walking away with Billy Dee’s body double, cut to Kylo’s ship; and then cut back to a slightly different location on Pasaana? Implying that they’ve been walking for a while to get away from the troopers.

Eh, I don’t really care. I’m working on an alternate workaround for the necklace scene anyway, so it doesn’t really matter to me.

If we applied this same logic to Mustafar then we wouldn’t have come up with all those establishing shots.

So, I have… ahem… ACQUIRED the 1080p and 4K HDR versions of both the Vehicle Flythroughs and the Biomes special. I went ahead and put it on my GoogleDrive.

If anyone wants them, hit me up.

Could it work to reinstate the snippet with Hux, Pryde and Chewie after Rey senses him on Kijimi and extending it with the new “torture chamber” shot at the end (after Pryde says “take it to Interrogation 6”) and some sinister music?

I’m all for establishing shots, and for slowing down the film’s pacing. But it’s not the same as Mustafar. Mustafar is an entire sequence, where, like…things happen. And it’s over a minute long. And it’s the very first scene in the movie, so it makes sense to establish not just that location, but the film as a whole. For settling into the movie.

To me - and this is subjective - it would feel weird to be in the middle of one scene, have an establishing shot of a different one, 25 second “scene,” and then cut back to the first location. With a cutaway like that, editing implies that the scenes are happening concurrently. So if you’re in the middle of a conversation, another conversation may be happening at the same time; but you wouldn’t want to just sit there idling waiting for the conversation to restart. You’re already settled into the Lando scene. You can’t just uproot yourself and settle into a completely different location, and then snap back. It’ll be jarring.

Think of it this way: you’re listening to one conversation. You turn your head, and see another conversation on your other side. Then you look back at the original conversation. If the first conversation wasn’t done, you wouldn’t pack up your things, walk to a new location, settle in, and find a different conversation, right?

Again, this is all subjective; but we can’t just use establishing shots willy-nilly. We should treat them how a professional director/editor would; establishing shots are more about settling the audience into a scene than they are about padding it.

Sherlock, Mustafar is 50 seconds long roughly (in the original).

And we’d likely add the Destroyer engines taking off, adding more time to the necklace scene.

We’re just gonna have to agree to disagree I guess. And leave it up to Hal.

That Mustafar shot is great! Either from the front, or possibly from the side with some forrest comped in.

I can’t remember whether there were 2 or 3, but TIEs even go by. But I’m sure we could just have Poppasketti comp in his TIEs over whatever portion of the shot.

And hey, the shot can be as long as we’d like! Maybe I should mock up something just to set the desired length of that shot.

EDIT: Nevermind, the music is already timed perfectly. So the length is set, unless we want to replace one or both of the existing other shots.

It’s pretty funny, they have two TIEs flyby, it’s (almost) literally the exact shot we were trying to fabricate. Just missing one.

I’ll say this though, while grabbing that bit would be the easy solution, if we could use an earlier bit of the shot, when we’re further away from the castle, and place the TIEs in there, that’d work better I think. And if by some magic we could place trees on the ground… that’d be really something (though I’m sure would not be easy).

Timing-wise I’d say it’d be nice to make it longer than it needs to be, just to have room to play around with.

Hey guys! Ashamed to say I haven’t been keeping up with this project (or anything on OT) as much lately. Would anyone mind filling me in on the major changes we’re gonna be seeing in V2? Thanks!

Don’t worry, you’re absolutely right. Wouldn’t work at all. Watch the scene in the original and notice how the music, camera moves, and edits work. An establishing shot would grind it all to a halt, in a bad way. I actually don’t even like how the scene has been rearranged in Hal’s edit for this very reason.

I agree with sherlock. While what was shown was a rough cut, still, the placement of a spaceship establishing shot there seems unnecessary and the transition to it is really quick. Best to leave it untouched. I’m not necessarily saying it was perfect in the original, but in general, I kind of get the feelings that changing certain things are trying to fix things that aint broken

So here is one (of many) potential things we could do with the Star Destroyer stuff:

https://youtu.be/9EOXMCZGbZg

There is another place where I feel these establishing shots could work really well to help with the frantic pacing of this film.

I actually didn’t notice a clip was made. If there was some way you could replace the music with a slower cue, it’d work better. But unfortunately it’s still awkward placement. Perfect example of this is the Vader helmet scene in TFA. Every time I watch the film I think about how that scene has a really poor placement, and it’s similar to this. Now, on the one hand, this is better, because this Kylo scene is directly related to what’s going on with the heroes. On the other hand, it’s even shorter. But same principle.

I think y’all are right, and thanks for the feedback. In the abstract this film needs more establishing shots but that specific moment isn’t ripe for wedging one in.

The Mustafar shot really would just need some simple color correction and some TIEs. Agreed, some trees or the hint of some would seal it. (And to darken the ‘hearth’ inside the castle. Or maybe not since we see the lava flowing out from the front.)

Yeah, my personal vote would be no to the Star Destroyer establishing shot, yes to using the new Mustafar footage in place of the Rogue One footage.

Alright I believe that the Vader’s castle stuff is all we’re going to use out of all this, then. I can’t think of anywhere else in the movie where the rest of these things could go. Unless I’m not thinking hard enough.

I agree the Mustafar change would be of good benefit so it’s not a recycle of Rogue One stuff. Man if some trees could be added to it with color correction … that would be really something.

Ach-To shot could be used if Hal didn’t want to use the existing one anymore, but it may not be worth the effort.

Right I forgot about that one. I actually think that one should be used but maybe it doesn’t matter since it would be a nighttime shot with the regrade so you wouldn’t even see too much.

Here’s the current state of affairs:

Things completed:

  • Slight tweak so Rey is shown contemplating before asking 3PO to consider going through with a memory wipe

  • Depict Kylo’s TIE with a different color stripe after the first one is destroyed on Pasaana (poppasketti)

  • Add a subtle sound of Leia vocalizing as she drops her headphones (JarJar Bricks)

  • Replace Luke’s line “a thousand generations live in you now,” with “We’ll always be with you” (MoviesRemastered, NeverarGreat, and ThisIsCreation)

  • Remove line, “They sold you to protect you.”

  • Add two shots of Coruscant to the conference room scene (poppasketti)

  • Recolor the quick light sequence on Rey’s lightsaber during the final scene to nod to Luke and Leia’s sabers by having a blue and purple light sequence (Burbin)

  • Fold in a few more audio submissions to the civilian fleet (contributions from ThisIsCreation and Richard G)

  • Alter Kylo’s line to, “We’ve become a dyad in the Force” (sherlockpotter)

  • Adjust placement of the Leia medal insert shot, as well as lighting (sherlockpotter)

  • Remove Finn’s line, “He wanted her alive.” Remove Palpatine’s two lines, “I never wanted you dead, I wanted you here,” and, “…for my grandchild to come home.” This makes Palpatine’s machinations a little more intuitive.

  • Replace the Imperial shuttle (used in V1 to replace the regular TIE fighter Kylo took to Exegol at the climax) with Vader’s TIE due to popular demand. (I still prefer the shuttle.)

  • Remove line, “from the Southern shore” from 3PO’s translation in order for the mystical whisper effect of the blade to be more needed without the compass plot element.

  • Slightly restructure the Exegol space battle’s beginning (DominicCobb)

  • Remove the single time either of Rey’s parents address her by name (so we can still imagine that she named herself)

Things being considered:

  • Redubbing 3PO’s Sith translation to remove the idea the dagger has the specific location inscribed upon it to support the ‘mystical guidance’ angle. Not strictly necessary. (Would also entail: move Finn’s line about Endor in the same scene, add flash of DSII as Rey handles the knife in Kylo’s quarters, remove line about “horrible things” happening with the blade, remove 3PO saying he knows “exactly where the Wayfinder is,” remove Jannah’s mention of Babu Frik sending her a transmission since he shouldn’t know where they are going in this sequence)

  • Depict Kijimi as more rebellious by comping in graffiti and/or adding audible ‘resisting’ of the First Order by the populace

  • Add Sith eyes to ‘evil Rey’ when she appears in the DSII, or at the very least remove the milky eyes that appear in Rey’s vision (either normal or Sith eyes)

Things waiting on others:

  • Pasaana puppet show to depict Luke’s feats at the Battle of Crait (at least RogueLeader working on puppets, poppasketti and MoviesRemastered provided relatively clean backdrops, and ThisIsCreation has done a vocal dub)

  • Redo the “that’s not even a language” trooper moment (Axlanian has the reigns)

  • Further extend the Mustafar sequence to slow the pacing (currently features work from poppasketti, MoviesRemastered, NeverarGreat, and 21C Peasant; hoping to augment and include footage from the recent ‘Biomes’ short - unassigned)

  • Depict the Skywalker lightsaber fizzling out at a critical moment in the DSII duel (waiting on MoviesRemastered; may be finished)

  • Depict both sabers as fizzling out or sparking after the climax on Exegol (waiting on MoviesRemastered; may be finished)

  • Correct glitches on jonh’s first pass on giving Luke a haircut, then hand this to NeverarGreat in order to reapply his work to depict Ach-To experiencing sunrise)

  • Depict the Skywalker saber as ‘cracked,’ with an unstable blade reminiscent of Kylo’s (kewlfish completed some of the shots needed, as have Luka Frik and MoviesRemastered)

My stance on revising fan edits.
