Good to hear that there’s still a clear focus on the end goal here. This is truly such a unique edit, being such a vastly high scaled community effort of various fans (and even bored pros). It’s been quite neat to watch it develop from the sideline while I toil away at my own projects.

Alrighty, Dagger discovery scene! The last time I tried to edit this clip, there was some concern that 3PO would know that this Sith artifact is the one they’re after. So I did a bit more dialogue tinkerage - now he thinks that “this must be the clue Master Luke was looking for.”

There might be some subtle sync issues with the echoes in the cave, but I didn’t really notice until I muted the center channel and cranked the volume up, so I think it will be okay?

(You know, whether or not the other Dagger Vision components can be figured out, I do think that this scene and the new Jannah scene really help to smooth over some of the internal logic of the film. At least, that’s my impression.)

Hmm, so let’s see. Even if the audio for the 3PO translation with the red eyes is left alone, the line in the post abide is fine. And there’d be no reason it’d have to be Babu who alerted Jannah. There’s be no technical reason it must be removed but it certainly could be. Babu need not be overly noble or anything.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I still think the 3PO translation is such a missed opportunity for something interesting in the theatrical cut - and there’s a bunch of those moments, sure, but this is one that’s within our power to actually change. Even if we don’t replace it with any of the ideas I’ve been part of, I still think it’s an opportunity on a silver platter to dub in something more clever and memorable.

The issue might even be we have too much freedom compared to usual, and that makes it paradoxically more difficult to conceive of and agree on the right creative move.

Having not watched the original version of this scene in quite some time, I kept waiting for the bit that felt like obvious dialogue replacement. I honestly couldn’t tell you what it was. Whatever the change was, it works seamlessly for me!

I believe he just removed the line about 3PO knowing exactly where the wayfinder is? I could be wrong, though.

I like this a lot. The theatrical version felt almost like a parody, “what do you know, this random knife says exactly where the wayfinder is!” Just saying “this is the clue” is much better, and the quality sounds believably fine as far as I can tell.

EdIT: I still think the changing of the dagger translation and all is such a good thing to pursue still. I hope it’ll work out.

Even if we kept things the way they are, the line still doesn’t make much sense because technically the coordinates provided aren’t where the wayfinder actually is but rather that cliffside where Rey takes out the dagger.

So yeah, good line removal.

The new change Sherlock is making is turning “It’s the clue Master Luke was looking for” into “This must be the clue that Master Luke was looking for”. This aims to make it so that 3PO doesn’t know what the dagger says. Personally I oppose to this change since it makes the already ridiculous plot even more ridiculous, as the gang would go through the whole ordeal to translate the inscription (traveling to an occupied warzone, sacrificing 3PO’s memory) without even knowing for sure it’s the information they need.

For comparison here’s Sherlock’s previous version (which also removes the lines relating to the location of the Wayfinder):

Looking back on it, it still reads as 3PO knowing what the dagger says (knowing for sure it’s what they need) but being unable to transalte, so I think it’s the better version (I would just add back the line “Oh I have read it, sir” if it can fitted back in). Sherlock argues it’s dumb for 3PO to know the information and not be able to relay it in another way, which is more of a nitpick on the same level of “dumb if you stop and really think about it” as everything else in the film. I think it’s dumber to have the whole second act hinge on translating this random inscription without even knowing it has the information they need.

Also this new change doesn’t fully work since when Finn asks “Where’s the Wayfinder?” 3PO says “I am afraid I cannot tell you” instead of “I am afraid I don’t know since I’m unable to translate this inscription and it might not even contain the location of the Wayfinder but I just have such a good hunch this is what we need I’d be willing to sacrifice my entire existence for it”.

Ah I remember now. Yeah this version is better since it preserves the comedy of the situation while also correcting that minor error.

As Burbin said, the only significant change I made in the new version is to tweak the dialogue from “It’s [definitely] the clue” to “This [must be] the clue.” Like I said last time, I don’t think it’s a huge logical leap that, when they’re looking for a Sith artifact by tracking a known Sith assassin, they find what is clearly a Sith artifact (based on the Sith language written on it), and deduce that it’s relevant to their Sith-centric mission. And they’re desperate for clues anyway. To me, that makes a lot more sense than someone programming 3PO with an illegal Sith to English dictionary, but then programming him to also not actually be able to use it, or to input the coordinates into the navigation computer himself, or something. The former is a reasonable deduction that anyone would make, especially given that the new dialogue line implies a level of logical reasoning behind it; the latter actually makes no sense.

I considered included the “Oh I have read it” line, but I ultimately decided against it. At that point, you’d have to convey to the audience that he read it, but he was unable to comprehend the writing. It felt like it was getting back into messy, convoluted territory, so I removed that line too.

I just finished watching the edit, and I am greatly pleased with all of it. Since I forgot what the movie was since I only watched it once 2 years ago, I pretty much thought it was seamless until I checked the change list and was shocked to see how many were added/removed/switched around.

The only thing that bugged me was the last shot of when the Falcon flew away from the sunset, as I felt that it looked too slow and not in-line with the visual effects of the film. However, I give a huge thanks to those who worked on the edit and still appreciate it nonetheless. I might be getting around to learning Blender just to fix that scene in the future but it was amazing overall.

jonh! So great to hear from you, buddy! Love the FX breakdown. More and more I find the FX reels themselves are almost as impressive as the FX. I love seeing all of the nodes and layers of detail come together!

It’s funny, I haven’t really looked at that shot in a year. Snooker and I went through about 5 different versions.

Ultimately we went with version E (pw: fanedit).

There is also version A, which is similar but does have a faster move.

The reason we went with E was because someone pointed out (I believe DominicCobb) that they used an extremely long telephoto lens to get the final composition with the sun/s so large behind Rey and BB-8. Therefore, because of the perspective, the Falcon should be large and not zoom across the screen so much.

And then there is Version D.

Honestly, I think version A looks significantly better; I agree with Dat SW Guy’s assessment.

Let’s hold onto version D for the Special Edition in twenty years’ time, of course.

At that point they’re not looking for a Sith artifact or Sith language, they’re looking for a nebulous “clue that could lead to a Wayfinder”, so it is a huge leap to make, not a reasonable deduction, specially coming from 3PO. Nothing implies the dagger is related to the Wayfinder at all, the “clue” could’ve been anything, anywhere, a piece of paper or a holorecording, the serpent could’ve eaten it for all they know. So 3PO would just be making a baseless assumption and the rest of the gang would immediatly agree it’s the one thing they need without a second thought. It would actually make no sense and I can see it being torn to shreds on analysis threads like this one.

3PO is fluent in over six million forms of communication, but a law that forbids translation of the Sith language was hard-coded into his programing at some point, I don’t see how that’s so complicated. Saying 3PO could’ve said the relevant information without a direct translation, or just punched in the coordinates, are just nitpicks, as there’s no specifics of how 3PO’s programming works. We’re told that he is “mechanically incapable” of speaking translations stored in his “redacted memory”, so who’s to say he isn’t also “mechanically incapable” of doing or saying anything that would relay that information?

Could 3P0’s line in the first video begin as soon as the scene cuts from Finn to the trooper? The initial silence of the transition is awkward, like something has clearly been cut. Maybe rework the trooper’s response to compensate, or take the time for 3P0’s line delivery to be slower and more natural.
