The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 453

I don’t think we’re doing this for Ascendant, but I think such a change would benefit the idea of Finn playing a more active role in recruiting these people to help join the cause. If Jannah and Co are helping Rey because she is the “last hope”, then it makes them sound like they’re already on board with the whole Resistance thing.

I think that would also be a bonus too, which even if this wasn’t a direction Hal is going/even thinking about from just messing around this dagger/Jannah/Frik stuff would add that as a “side bonus” regarding Finn … which all be honest, a stupid lost opportunity on JJ’s part.

If I have some spare time I may mock up a rough idea.

There are plenty of lost opportunities in this film, jarbear. LMAO.

I’ll bet that’s how Kylo tracked them to Endor in the first place! “Wait, did this “Babu Frik” fellow say Rey is going to Endor? Quick, prepare only my ship! I’ve got this though; everyone else can stay put.”

I’m literally cackling at the thought that Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, the Knights of Ren, and the combined resources of the entire First Order were only able to track Rey through this adventure because a pig-child gave her a necklace 90 seconds earlier; and later, because a droid-hacker-frog-monkey sent out a generic tweet that said she was going to Endor.

They’re the most fearsome hunters since Ochi - the man who didn’t realize his target was screaming at him just 200 feet away, and who had to carve a map back to HQ into his own murder weapon in order to find it again.

In all seriousness, we could lift some lines from TLJ so that the dialogue goes:

JANNAH: Rough landing.
POE: I’ve seen worse.
JANNAH: I’ve seen better.
REY: Stop. Please, we have to get to that wreck. There is something inside there we need.

Or else, maybe just repurpose what she says to Zorii earlier in the film? (Did we change that line? I remember discussion about it, but I can’t remember what was decided.)

JANNAH: Rough landing.
POE: I’ve seen worse.
JANNAH: I’ve seen better.
REY: We could really use your help. Please, we have to get to that wreck. There is something inside there we need.

It’s literally not mentioned in canon how Kylo tracked them to Endor. So you’re probably right Sherlock haha.

Dang it Babu.

Author

Lol, that’s probably it, though it is not confirmed at least.

But we also have the “movie logic” that the Knights have been on their trail … so there’s at least another explanation that is implied already in the movie.

I really like this idea.

They really don’t explain how Kylo knows where she is going, do they? I assumed they put a tracking device on the Falcon, or they tracked them through hyperspace, but they didn’t follow them. But I don’t think they ever clarify it. Maybe the Emperor told him where the Wayfinder is, since it is HIS Wayfinder, but Kylo tells him, “I know where she’s going.” as if the Emperor doesn’t know where she’s going (didn’t Hal move this scene up to a place where it makes sense?)

My most recent theory is that Kylo can read Sith, so he must’ve read it at some point while it was in his chambers. But again, I don’t think the film really explicitly tells us.

The Dyad became a convenient storytelling band-aid for them, didn’t it?

This actually makes the most sense, come to think of it. First Order droids also wouldn’t have the same restrictions as a Republic Era droid like 3PO.

I mean, the Force itself is a “convenient storytelling band-aid” for the saga, why else would non-Force-sensitives be unable to use magical powers?

When you stop and consider each of them, the Force itself represents the core theme in each movie, and acts an in-universe manifestation of the will of the plot. It’s inevitable due to how the monomyth structure works, which I suspect would have appealed to George Lucas as an ardent supporter of the monomyth.

It’s why I love Han’s “That’s not how the Force works!” when Finn is talking about miraculously sneaking onto Starkiller Base without a plan. Because it’s actually exactly how the Force works.

The closest explanation we get is in the novelisation; Kylo can sense where she’s planning to go through the Dyad.

That’s kind of what I was thinking when I suggested cutting the “necklace tracking” scene. I’d rather handwave something away, than over-explain it to the point of ridiculousness. (Not that I’m trying to reopen a past debate, just citing an example.)

I guess my thinking is: Every Star Wars movie is filled with lines that are utterly stupid on close inspection. That’s part of the deal; I get it. But if we’re recutting the movie anyway, and it doesn’t hurt anything to remove them (e.g. Lando’s transmission from Leia, again, just an example), then I probably lean in favor of it.

If the removal actually helps to make the film better, such as this line about Babu “What The” Frik, or the line about 3PO reading the Wayfinder location from the Dagger, then I’m all for the change.

Maybe as a little reality check for us, I just saw that Mark Hamill recently said that Lucas had attempted to get the Daffy Duck short ‘Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a half Century’ to play before the original Star Wars to let the audience know it wasn’t meant to be overly serious.

That said, even if the 3PO thing doesn’t pan out… it’s okay. And the work and poetry and recordings and all of it are still good and enjoyable even so.

Feeling exhausted and fried tonight. Nothing to do with this project, but I wanted to chime in at least and voice my skepticism that the 3PO dub idea will truly feel seamless and fit into the film in a way that doesn’t cause more issues.
And even if it doesn’t manifest here, I hope it does in another project.

I guess yeah, since the telepathic conversation between Kylo and Palpatine has been moved to earlier, one could infer perhaps he told Kylo where to find Rey. Without the dagger, though, I guess the emperor gave him detailed instructions about a place he only visited once and never in it’s destroyed state.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Damn, nice catch on the Babu Frik conundrum, this idea so far had been pretty non-intrusive with the rest of the film.

At the very least, even if the 3PO dub doesn’t pan out, I still think it’d be a worthy edition to remove Rey’s lines when picking up the dagger and replace the ‘screams’ with sith whispers. Her reactions seem tailor-made to bring attention to these whispers that later become very important.

There’s an old expression in the film industry that says “kill your darlings.” If you’ve never heard it before, it means that even the ideas that you love the most should get cut if cutting them benefits the overall story. So I personally really like the rhyming inscription, but if the film is going to flow better without it, then removing it is unquestionably the way to go.

(I personally think it would still be better to change Jannah’s line than to change our entire mythos surrounding the dagger, but it depends whether we can manage it successfully or not.)

I had another idea for a Post-Location-Reveal/Falcon Scene. Y’all remember this vision? If we can replicate a similar distortion effect, that might be a subtle way of tying back into the other trilogies.

So, picture that effect over, say, a shot of the Throne Room or something. We hear Sith Whispers, and Finn’s voice, kind of echoey, as he says “The Endor System? Are you sure? Rey?” [cut to a brief shot of Rey looking all spaced out] Finn says again, “Rey!” [the panel on the Falcon sparks, Rey looks up at it, snapping out of her daze. She clears the smoke, the scene resumes as normal].

[Cut to the Falcon flying through hyperspace.] Poe says “Landing gear’s busted? How busted?” [Potentially insert a new shot of Chewie reacting, or even 3PO reacting (“Oh my!”), to alleviate the rushed transition that Hal pointed out. Plus, it would help us to pad out the movie a little more and take a breath.]

We get another visual depiction of the new location, Finn learns about it, and we don’t have to copy much footage from later in the scene. Plus, a Prequel tie in!

If we can get that reshuffle to work in the sequence, I really do like the flow of Poe commenting on their landing gear, and then using that scene as a segue into the next. It’s not the biggest deal, but the current progression just feels a little choppy to me.

I still believe it would be more beneficial than not to keep the mythology of the Dagger. It accomplished a few things with, I think, doable changes/edits to accomplish it.

  1. It benefits Ray’s character building. This movie is, trying to tell us, she is struggling between light and dark. She does clearly struggle with the light at the beginning. However, the movie is telling us she is struggling with using the dark … but not really? The only instance, prior to her encounter with Palps, is the “one time” she unknowingly used force lighting. Which in turn scarred her. So … she is wanting/struggling with the light but freaking out about the dark. That’s not really a struggle of choosing a side.

By having the dagger be a Dark Side thingy that actually aides her, like she has done in the previous movies of using the dark side “without a problem” it continues the struggle on to use it or not?

  1. Why would Babu Frik send a broadcast out to the galaxy: Hey Ya’ll, we have the crew that is our last hope going to Endor. If you are/or support the First Order, please disregard. I’m a black market guy who has to live in secret, so please don’t spread this around too much. Thanks!

  2. It would be nice that Finn’s conversation with Jannah works out to be a motivation for Jannah and crew to join up with them. You know, actually have Finn’s origin story of Storm Trooper turn good to help recruit others. Crazy concept, I know!

I didn’t even consider that, if Babu doesn’t reach out to Jannah before they arrive, that Finn would be the primary source of motivation for her to join the cause. Sure, we’d have to deprive Babu of a hero moment, and give it to one of our main characters instead; but it might just be worth it.

If we can play around with Jannah’s intro and figure out something we’re content with, that’s really the last big hurdle we have to jump over. The way Ascendant has the rest of the film play out from that point forward requires no more changes.

EDIT: Just to throw it out there, this is how it could play out.

Jannah: Are you with the Resistance?

Poe: That depends.

Let that wide shot play out in full, but cut out Jannah’s response. Cut the following shot of Jannah mentioning Babu. Cut 3PO’s response. Move random shot of guy on horse to later. Cut Jannah’s line about Rey being the last hope.

[After a tense pause, Rey decides to speak honestly with them.]
Rey: We have to get to that wreck. There’s something inside there we need.

Place shot of random guy on horse here, to create a beat as we wait for Jannah’s response.

Jannah: We can take you there, by water.

Scene plays out as-is.

(The shot of 3PO could be potentially be used for something else. Maybe a replacement funny line.)

I’ll play around with a rough idea like that Rogue. Last night I was playing around a little bit and a good chunk of your suggestion is what I was coming up with too (minor differences). It is a good time to actually let things “pause” for even brief moment and have Rey cut the tension. I did cut out the beginning part where Rey is about to speak since it showed Poe lowering the blaster, but there wasn’t a reason for him to do that. I’ll post a rough idea based on Rogue’s concept once I get home.
