Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread — Page 150

Honestly, I wouldn’t add Anakin at the end since he has no connection whatsoever to Rey and would stick out. What Jonh has done for the Palpy fight is perfect. (Of course I agree, with many people, that Anakin was/is such an important part of Star Wars that they overlooked big time. Sigh.)

I’d much prefer the alternate take people have done (sorry been too long … was it Dominic?) that has Rey NOT saying Skywalker and “just Rey.” The “Skywalker” Saga is over and she’s doing her own thing.

I think it was poppasketti who did the work on it. But agreed. I personally also would cut the Ghosts from Tatooine. She’s just Rey. That’s it. If, for canon reasons she calls herself Skywalker later, we can pretend it’s for paperwork reasons. Like Han :p

So I decided to try just pulling a still photo from the one YouTube video and then use that. It’s still just a still image and clearly from the one ROTS scene, but he’s actually smiling now and it looks more natural IMO. I’ll definitely still try to tweak it with improvements but otherwise, I’m pretty happy with how this has come out for just being a still image from ROTS haha

For comparison, the original edit I did with a ROTS promo photo:

You could try running ebsynth over Anakin to give him some movement. See if you can get his hair to blow a little to match Leia’s hood.

How would I go about doing that? Is ebsynth a software?

I posted a test of black robe Rey earlier in the thread, which might be the one you’re thinking of. I used EBSynth but it still required a lot of manual masking because the tracking wasn’t great. You can see around her shoulders where I had to mask the original footage back in because EBSynth kept wanting to spread the black to the background as the shot pans (probably would’ve made more sense to start with the ending frame and process it backwards…).

I did try a test of one shot of the end scene using Rotobrush 2.0 instead, but I couldn’t get that to track any better, so it still required me to do a bunch of almost frame-by-frame masking - ultimately I decided it added basically nothing to the film for the time investment and stopped working on it.

I didn’t realise how much I needed this until I saw it. This is such a staggeringly huge improvement, and an almost obscenely impressive piece of VFX work. Well done.

The Black Robe is one of the things I want to invest time in down the road. I think it’s necessary, personally. Anakin and Luke wear black in their respective finales to represent the pull to the dark they’re feeling. The fact they went with white for RoS instead is baffling.

Also, anyone read the Duel of the Fates script and come away thinking that, aside from losing the connecting threads to TLJ, it felt like it was basically the same as RoS?

I know the whole trailer music thing has been beaten to death but I am ‘working’ on the version placed over the climactic confrontation. I like where it’s sitting but I haven’t nailed the blending in and out. Yet.

That said I find inspiration in avoidance and have temporarily turned to my own cut of the battle for my 4K edit that is very much a work in progress. I still plan on using Topaz AI to upscale some of the VFX work of other editors and slot in the purple saber and force ghosts where appropriate but this is feeling like a pretty good first draft. Thoughts?

Heya! I’m working on a fan edit which I have used Topaz AI to upscale VFX work of other editors. Though the post is kinda oldish and the thread isnt very “hot” per say, you can check out some of my initial results in this thread.

This is an image from when Palp has red lightning. Question is, should the Saber reflection be purple, and should the force ghosts still be blue or would the redness of their sky drown out the colour?

I would say the reflection should be a mix of red and purple. As for the ghosts, I guess that depends on how you think the light works on Force Ghosts… I would say they should be grayish because that’s what a translucent blue object would probably look like under a red sky, but the Force Ghosts in the original seem to be light sources of their own, so they should be blue, but that might look unnatural… so maybe a pale blue?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

These are the challenges I’m coming up against. I don’t think anywhere in other movies do we see force ghosts under anything other than natural light? Part of me says they should pop and be blue but another says that should be translucent and therefore red. The Saber colour is easy but without the original force ghost layers, it’s gonna be a lot of work changing their colour. I may try and message Jonh to see if he still has them.

Since there is no Palpatine in my edit, Exogol serves only as the staging area for the Final Order fleet, which necessitates pushing the Ren/Rey DSII Duel to the third act, AFTER Leia has gone off to help Ben. Which means that the Duel itself no longer acts as a catalyst for Leia realising she needs to help her son.

So I’m working on constructing a new scene using the “Ren/Palps Force convo” and “Leia reacts to Ben” scenes. But changing it so we’re seeing Ren connecting to Leia through the Force to challenge her. This will be her catalyst for trying to help Rey defeat him.

This is what I’m toying with having him say.

“Mother.” (This will be what gets her attention and causes her to drop her headset)

“I know where she’s going. Your apprentice.”

“I will find her. And turn her to the darkside.”

“You can’t stop me.”

Thoughts?

Back again with v3 of Anakin’s Force ghost. I’ve now made the fade-in smoother, added slight full-body movement, and made the transparency match the other three more. I’m pretty happy with this now, but I’m definitely interested in seeing if I can somehow get a slight blue aura around him and a bit of living motion like robe or hair movement although I think that’s far outside the realm of my abilities.

The ghosts being red is weird visually. Personally (and who knows if this is even an option) I would re-color all of the Exegol footage, and then check in with Jonh if he’s still got his original project files from adding the ghosts. Instead of re-coloring around them, if he could swap in the alt-colored-Exegol in his project with the blue ghosts still on top of it, that would be great.

Yeah, it would be the first time seeing a force ghost in that type of environment so it’s weird to see and understand how they would act under that lighting. I’ve messaged Jon to see if that’s possible. It would be a great help.

I made this tutorial explaining why/how I’m giving Leia a better send off and allowing Han to have more impact. https://youtu.be/ueu_fV8lbac

They might end up just being white in that kind of lighting. They shouldn’t be purple, though.

I’m leaning more towards Ed Slushie’s point and would go pale blue, unless it looks super weird.

I remembered there was a cool red light effect on Yoda and Ben Kenobi in ESB where Luke takes off from Dagobah and thought that might give us an in-canon example. But Ben vanishes before the red light covers that area, even though he’s still talking to Yoda, so looks like Lucas didn’t know what to do either 😃 Ben was shown at full brightness when his surroundings were dark, tho, so having the Force ghosts be somewhat independently lit/colored from their surroundings feels like a reasonable avenue to go in.

That’s interesting. I’ll go research ESB and see.

While colourgrading last night I did notice a stupid continuety issue within the original. When Rey grabs Leias Saber her hand is facing backwards, the following shot it’s facing down and in the following shot her wrist is facing Palpatine. SO, To try and break these shots up, I may be about to tweak is so the ghosts arrive after Palps stops the lightning, thus eliminating this dilemma… maybe! 🤞

It’s at around 1hr25min in to ESB for those playing along at home. Doesn’t really come out that great on my Disney+ stream of the movie, but should look good on any restored version (Adywan, HAL, etc).

It’s a shame Ben disappears before the light change. I think the ghost effect changes in every movie?

I’ve played around with that cut but I much prefer the order I’ve edited the scenes. I’m gonna have to let Rey’s hand continuety go and focus on the colour scheme.

So, what if the ghosts fade in from red to purple but at full opacity they’re blue?

I recently started playing KOTOR 2 again and I would love to find a way to put some classic Sith Armor somewhere in Exegol when Kylo Ren first is walking around, just in the background somewhere. It would be a nice little easter egg 😃

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

As long as you aim for moving them away from the straight red of the surroundings to show they’re actually there, so to speak, and don’t go to far afield from the effect of jonh’s bluish-on-blue from the original Exogol coloring (which it sounds like you’re doing), that should be fine.
