Hey guys, this thread is way to long to get a hint of how things are going, but is this cut finished? Is there any way I can get a PM for the links to this re-edited trilogy? I’d very much appreciate it, thanks in advance, you guys are amazing!

422 HQ might be overkill depending on your source, you won’t be able to make something higher quality than what it was to start with, but you can make the files larger.

What’s your source? If it’s a 1070p BluRay, you likely don’t need more than ProRes 422 LT. If it’s a UHD-BD, you might need to go to an even larger format to handle the HDR aspects, like ProRes 4444.

I mean, you can’t gain quality but you can lose quality by recompressing, even if the file is higher bitrate than your source. I’m just trying to minimize the amount of generational loss.

You should always check a project’s first post, most are pretty good about keeping the status of their projects updated there.

What’s your source file? Going to DNxHR HQ might be overkill, especially if you’re starting with a 1080p BD. These formats have “HQ” at the end, but you can’t create higher quality than you start with, even if the files get bigger. DNx is effectively ProRes for Avid.

And I understand what you’re talking about with FFmpeg. It’s a great tool when you know what you’re doing. My point is that anything that forces people to use command line isn’t simple, and would be the last thing I suggest to anyone without a good understanding of how to use command line tools.

I don’t know that it’s necessary, but I have always used ProRes HQ to be safe. The end result can never technically be as good as the original BluRay (for example) source, but I want it to be as close as possible.

On the other hand, using and saving ProRes LT files could’ve saved me a lot of headache as oppose to reattaching media later and having to manually realign clips.

Man, if I woke up and it was 2013 again, I could get through this all dramatically more efficiently.

Haha! If you decide to redo things, let me know. Might have a couple tools/assets that you find useful.

This is definitely true. Bitrate is relative to the format, so just because Prores LT is a higher bitrate doesn’t mean it will capture 100% of the detail from an H264. LT can struggle on scenes with a lot of detail and fine grain. I think for safety, Hal, there’s nothing wrong with Prores 422 or HQ. You definitely don’t want to accidentally lose a bit of detail by choosing a lower bitrate.

FWIW, I usually export to Prores 422 or HQ and encode to H.264 with ffmpeg. One thing I will say about ffmpeg; though it is free, open-source, and not part of a professional suite, it is the only encoder I’ve seen produce H264 files that are visually identical to their Prores masters, even in scenes with a lot of grain. It’s really incredible. It is also very irritating to use!

Something that bugs the hell out of me, and I’d love to see removed in a fanedit, is the ring of little spikes that pop up on Rey’s yellow lightsaber at the very end of the movie. I was watching this scene earlier and it occurred to me how incredibly easy it would be to remove them, by taking a small rectangle of footage directly above them and duplicating it over them (I made a mockup from a still frame, but I’m not sure how to upload it in here).

Is it only me that hates those little spikes? To me, they turn a perfectly fine lightsaber design into something from 2012 DeviantArt. Hell, if it doesn’t bother anyone else nearly as much as it bothers me, and if someone can send me the bit of footage and tell me what to do with my export settings (Premiere Pro CS6 for Mac), I’ll even do it myself.

Cool! I’ll put something together.

Could anyone send me just that scene in high quality? I know my computer will crash if I try and ingest an entire feature-length BluRay quality file.

Are you talking about the triangular vent/flap things on top? They don’t bother me from a visuals/design standpoint, I’m more confused by how they seem to be entering the beam of the saber without being destroyed.

I’m with you on this. So, the Saber beam pushes them open and closes them again? Seems a little far-fetched.

I assumed it was some sort of safety, perhaps from back before saber tech was more refined and reliable (since Rey had been reading old books on the Jedi). Some sort of beam-resistant metal, the pieces cover up the opening when it’s off, then open up mechanically when she turns the twisting switch that turns the beam on. That way if the beam turns on by itself due to some internal glitch, it doesn’t destroy whatever it happened to be pointing at.

Visually I like it. The more mechanical nature of her lightsaber feels personal based on her experience as a parts scavenger.

Same. I like that it’s a design beyond the basic retread (like, did we REALLY need another movie with Anakin’s/Luke’s blue lightsaber?)

It bothers me from a visual design standpoint, but this also bugs me about it, yeah.

I’ll post progress updates, but the biggest stumbling block for me is going to be making sure my project settings and export settings are all correct so my footage will match up with the rest. I studied editing at uni but it’s been a while since I did any, and file formats and sizes etc are all very different now than they were back then.
