Here is Rey’s lightsaber recolored purple to match Leia’s showing that she used Leia’s crystal to construct her saber.

This is the first time I recolored an object. I couldn’t get the bits shining out of the hilt in the final shot without creating weird halo effects in the immediate vicinity.

Hey, it looks good!

I kind of see what you mean but it isn’t really a big deal imo.
Do you think Leia and Rey’s sabers being the same color will be enough to imply she is using her crystal? I wonder if you gave their sabers the same ignition sound would help hammer it home. But maybe it isn’t necessary.

Anyway, cool to see this idea come to fruition. Even beyond giving Leia’s saber a function in the story during the resolution of the film, you could argue that purple symbolizes a balance between red and blue, the dark side and the light. Too bad an interesting idea like that is never really expressed in dialogue.

would love a link to check it out. I posted in another thread some interesting fan art of a “darth Jar Jar” I saw. If that could be implemented somehow along with footage from the Ren vs Vader fan film footage, you could reasonably recreate some of the vibes of the “Tor Vallum” concepts from the Duel of the Fates script.

Maybe you could show the clone tanks, but with him inside? Maybe the dark ray footage could be repurposed with this art used for the head? Like in this clip? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlvqZNwhrM4

If you could somehow use the Ren vs Vader stuff that would actually be pretty cool.

Either way, looking forward to v3. The idea of recoloring some of Mustafar as Exegol should help with the opening feeling so rushed…

And I personally love Rey using Leia’s crystal. 😃 and your recolor looks great.

I don’t know what Acbagel’s plans for tRoS are, but this edit feels like a strong companion to their TFA & TLJ edits.

Also I haven’t watched Ascendant yet, but in that edit’s changelog it mentions doing something to intimate that Leia helped Rey rebuild Anakin’s lightsaber, and I was wondering if that could be applied here at all?
At the very least, once Ascendant v2 is out, I think you should source the crackly saber effects for Anakin/Rey’s lightsaber.

And finally, I think Rey’s line to Leia about “earning” Luke’s saber is just so clunky. And there’s nothing in the previous films that setup her having that fear of being un-worthy. Though I do appreciate your attempts to show that her issue in this film is finally overcoming her self-doubt and her personal fear of failure/what it meant that she wanted to take Ren’s hand.

Edit: Looking at RougueLeader’s suggestion again for using the Ren vs Vader fight, I thought that the initiating factor could be Ren grabbing hold of the Wayfinder/Key. The Wayfinder tests him and his victory over “Vader” is accepted as proof that he won’t fail the way Vader did, and he is granted access to the Remnant Fleet.

To feel properly in place it would need new dialogue, but you could put it in there as is and would work well, again building up the runtime and continuing to add context (plus as RL said the concept is another way your edit brings the film back to the original concept)

((and thinking about the original DotF concept has me wondering if the stuff people were working on in the Ascendant thread for having Ren start on Coruscant could be used here…))

Thanks for the comments everyone. I’ve started updating the main thread post with the updates I’ve completed for v3. I’m not including my list of proposed edits at this time because a number of them are in a gray area where I’m not sure if they will come to pass or not or to what extent.

There seems to be a lot of interest in using the Force of Darkness fan-film. I’ve been undecided on this issue, but I may have to let popular opinion sway me to a decision.

Don’t do anything you don’t WANT to do, just cus others like the idea. If anything someone else can take the idea and run with it.

But if you do use it, Kylo having a vision when he grabs the Wayfinder would be a nice parallel to Rey having one when she grabs it later.

Also, Rey getting the Wayfinder needs to do something or it’s just like “why?” did she need to go after it. By using the recolored Mustafar scene you establish the Wayfinder as having a connection to the fleet.

So what if Rey getting hers lets her do something to help the Resistance by disabling part of the Order’s fleet or something?

I must have missed where joshuabri mentioned plans to recolor Mustafar to make it a part of Exegol. Is that mentioned in the original post?

I do think audiences will wonder what the point of Rey going after the second Wayfinder was if the Resistance was able to find Exegol without it, but I do think there is some beneficial irony in that.

I think it would be helpful to try to reframe Rey’s obsession with Wayfinder to become more of a selfish quest by the time she leaves everyone behind to go after it. She says she needs to find it to stop the fleet and save her friends, but I like the idea that dark side auras of the Sith dagger, the Wayfinders, and the Death Star might be seducing her. She is beginning to want power, and needing it so save her friends is her excuse.

If you think about it, though, Rey did help the Resistance find Exegol. Her most important action was actually healing the serpant on Pasaana. This selfless action inspired BB-8 to give some of his own energy to power D-O up, and it was D-O that knew the route to Exegol all along. So, Rey’s obession with finding the Wayfinder is misguided by this point.

I mentioned this at one point, but perhaps you could reutilize the scene where Pryde speaks with Palpatine’s hologram, and instead have Kylo call Pryde, and he tells Pryde to wait until he returns. So Rey simply drawing Kylo away from the fleet is giving the Resistance time to stop the fleet before they leave Exegol.

joshuabri mentions the Mustafar recolor in the OP.

As for the idea of Kylo calling Pryde and telling him to wait, I might play around with that even if joshuabri doesn’t.

Reading this thread, I’m really curious to see the finished product of this. (Although, I’m assuming that the Rey/Ben kiss has to be gone which does bum me out). However, with putting the scene where Kylo throws his red lightsaber away* at the end since he’s still wearing the cape/Kylo outfit, that shot of him walking in the desert in Passana can be used walking up to Rey now in Tatooine in the final scene.

  • I have to say I am bummed that you cut the Han/Ben repeating the dialogue from TFA. I loved that because the difference in the meaning of the dialogue was so beautifully acted and directed. It was my favorite scene in TROS.

Everything you’ve done sounds so exciting and fascinating.

It’s not that I don’t want to use the Force of Darkness, it’s just that I haven’t come to a decision yet. I see both positives and negatives of using it but haven’t been able to decide which outweighs the other. If most people think the positives clearly outweigh the negatives, that might be enough to convince me I’m seeing too much on the negative side.

Reframing Rey’s Wayfinder quest as more selfish is a great idea. How to accomplish that is the trick though.

I agree that reutilizing the Pryde scene with Kylo is another great idea. However, I don’t think I could pull that off. If Delpheas can do it, I would gladly use it here.

I’ve added the Force of Darkness fan-film to the Exegol opening (for now anyway). Here’s how it stands currently with the Mustafar and FoD scenes included. I’ll probably continue to refine the coloring a bit.

Got some work done on this over the weekend. The change list on the first page is updated with everything done so far. My next objective is to introduce the Rey killed her parents angle. Not sure when this will be done as I still haven’t found the time to sit and watch krausfadr’s edit to see how it was implemented there.

I’ve been thinking about the old lady at the end. I’m starting to think I should just remove her completely. The sequence would be Rey ignites her new lightsaber, stands up, sees the Force ghosts of Luke and Leia watching her, smiles, and gets back on the Falcon to leave with her friends. It would leave the whole sequence without any dialogue, though, which feels a little odd. Anyone have a compelling argument for why she should stay in?

Author
Time

Kinda would be odd it being quiet …

Some time ago there was work done with Rey responding to the lady as “just Rey” if you want something different then the “Rey Skywalker.”

Only option I can think of if you want some dialogue that’s different.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

I do have pappasketti’s “Just Rey” footage in already. I just hate that the old lady is so obviously just there to ask for her name. There’s no pretense of subtlety.

My one suggestion would be to have the Star Destroyers rise the instant Vader is decapitated. The denouement from the short film feels out of place, and the final recoloured Mustafar shot sticks out due to the sky. How it cuts in at the beginning of the short film footage is seamless, though.

Also, let me just say, I watched the current released version of this earlier today, and I really, really enjoyed it. I’m amazed how well the reordered scenes work - the DSII duel feels like an end-of-movie duel! - and at how much more exhilarating the Exegol space battle is when cut together with so few interruptions.

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I did cut the final shot of Kylo after posting that Kylo/Vader clip so that it ended with Kylo staring at the snow where Vader had been. I will look at cutting that shot too. I will also play around with the Mustafar shot to see if I can darken the sky considerably. I’d like to keep that one if possible.

After watching krausfadr’s edit, which succeeded in implementing the Rey killed her parents reveal much as I had originally intended, I started working on this over the weekend. I redid the Force-Skype scene and reinstated much of the original dialogue about Rey’s parents while removing the less convincing dialogue inserts. I haven’t touched the hangar scene yet though.

Here is a vision sequence I’ve been working on. This happens during the brief Rey vs. Dark Rey duel. It’s meant to further show the pull of the Dark Side on Rey as she sees that succumbing to the Dark Side can enable her to defeat her enemies.

I revisited using “Duel of the Fates” during the DSII duel. I couldn’t get it to my satisfaction in V2, but I was happy with the result this time. So “Duel of the Fates” is in and Samuel Kim’s trailer music is out.

Nobody has offered to help improve the trickier dialogue edits, so I’m calling V3 finished and will have the finished product ready in the next few days.

I set the project to the Blu-ray’s 2.39 aspect ratio. That is for whatever reason DaVinci Resolve’s default resolution at that aspect ratio. The Blu-ray is at 1920x804 for comparison.
