Would it not be amazing if we got a Darth Vader movie directed by Christopher Nolan?

Right? I think A Darth Vader movie that takes place between Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars (around s1 of SW Rebels) would be absolutely amazing. Vader is a really interesting character, and the purpose of this movie would develop him, and show his inner conflicts in that time. Even more than that, it would be a break from the Star Wars releases we are used to, as it is a movie about a villain. I thought Christopher Nolan as a director because not only would the usually dark tone of his movies fit with the theme, but also he did a great job with the dark knight villains and, IMO it would be cool to see Darth Vader get the same treatment. Christopher Nolan is very creative with what he does as well. Just curious what others would think of this.

A movie where he hunts down and destroys the remaining Jedi to the last man or woman is what i always wanted to see and did not get with the prequels. Vader in the suit. But i don’t see what that offers to expanding the Star Wars mythos, seems to limit it in a way. Star Wars needs to move beyond nostalgia and the OT. If anything as much as i enjoyed them the sequels proved that. Star Wars is stuck in the past. There are so many worlds, creatures and adventures they could create and make something new and fresh. But of course that involves risk. How much risk is Disney into these days. I think they like to play things safe.

That’s oddly specific. I mean I like Nolan’s films, but now that he’s past his “Batman phase” I don’t see him ever doing franchise films again. He’s basically his own brand now, and I can’t imagine he’d be able to work under Disney/Lucasfilm’s restrictions.

A Vader film is also kind of a tricky thing, because how do you craft a film around a character who’s already had six films that’s more or less about him? In my opinion Disney should start animating some of their best comic series, kinda like what Warner Bros Animation does with DC comics. The Vader comic series by Charles Soul is IMO one of the best SW comics ever made (and definitely the best of the current era) and would make for a great animated series or series of short-ish straight to home-video/streaming type movies.

Id also like them to do animated movies or series for other things like Indiana Jones for instance. Not just Star Wars. And adapt some of the legends material into non canon animated films. I mean using the DC illustration, they have a sort of multiverse where different canons exist for Superman and Batman stories that are not all in the same continuity.

Agreed. They could so easily “win back” a lot of older SW fans by making animated films of the Thrawn Trilogy, Shadows of the Empire, etc. If WB can do it with reasonably quality I don’t see why Disney/Lucasfilm can’t do it. I’m sure Disney has a lot of animators that would love to work on these projects. As for canon status; all they have to do is slap the “Legends” logo on them. A lot of people simply would’t know or care what the difference is, and those who do care already knows the distinction anyway.

Also, animated Indy films would be awesome. They probably wouldn’t manage to get Ford back for the voice, but people have accepted substitutes for SW characters, so why not Indy as well.

I’m seeing a lot of really good points here. This was a thought that just came across my brain and not super developed. I was looking to see what you all had to say, and I’m so glad to see all your responses.

I totally agree with you. I wonder how George Lucas’s sequel trilogy focused on the Whills would have turned out.

For the love of God, no more Vader. A once interesting and mysterious villain in 1977, completely back-storied to death.

I’d much rather see them venture into new worlds and new characters. I’d love it if they went with animated features, particularly if it were in the style of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I’m not a Marvel person, but I’ve watched that 3 or 4 times already. Fantastic story and an animation tour de force.

An all new sector of the GFFA with entirely new characters, unrelated to The Saga, in the style below - I’d be all in.

Interesting thought, Anchorhead, the animation style sounds like it would make a nice harmony between the CGI Clone Wars and Genndy’s stylized 2D version.

I don’t really think Darth Vader needs his own film. We already have the prequels. We understand how he got in his mask. It is presumed that between 3 and 4 he served under the Emperor and saw the goings-on of the Empire. Unless writer is gonna add stuff to his story (which won’t change anything in 4-6) it will purely be fan service - meaningless light saber fights and action scenes with TIE fighters.

I have liked the Dark Times comics about Vader, The first and second of the Marvel series and Doctor Aphra.
The Dark Times ones are no longer canon. I would be lying i i said i wouldn’t watch a high budget Darth Vader a Star Wars movie film. But i just don’t see the point. The character has been overused in the old EU and New EU. While there is a lot of unexplored areas of the Star Wars universe and new worlds and characters, in a far future or far past setting they could do movies about without having to go back to the OT or the prequels to draw on.

They should do more non Jedi and Sith stuff, but they also should due a series about the dawn of the jedi and the beginnings of the Sith. They don’t have to be beholden to the Kotor games, the Old republic or tales of the jedi because non it is canon.

Vader has been explored, but a Luke Skywalker Jedi teacher series on Disney Plus set between episodes VI and VII is unexplored. And Lucasfilm could use de-aging tech and have Mark Hamill do it.

Anyway who would they cast as Vader. Would they show Vader in his chamber with his mask off all scarred and stuff with Hayden in heavy makeup. Like some fans want. It would be cheaper to use some random and put them in the suit and in closeups without the mask and in makeup.

Anyway i have no idea what Lucasfilm’s plans are but i do think at some point Vader will show up in a future season of Obi Wan if there are more than one, or the Mandalorian. More cameos. Like Rogue One, and the animated rebels.

We’ve seen a lot of Anakin in the prequels and The Clone Wars series, but not a whole lot of Vader since the Originals. He had a little part in Rogue One and popped up in the animated series, but most of Vader still resides in the Originals, so I don’t feel overwhelmed with Vader.

Before the prequels were released, I envisioned a lot more of Vader hunting down Jedi. Now that we have Anakin’s backstory, I’m not sure a movie with Vader as the central character would fit well. I think instead you would have to make something centered around a group of Jedi who survived Order 66 and are being hunted by Vader. Focus on and build those characters, then let Vader do what he does best, be the menacing villain who inspires fear. That sounds a lot like Rogue One with more Jedi, so maybe that wouldn’t fit well either.

Perhaps Vader best left to surprise cameos that leave us wanting more.

A ‘Jedi Purge’ movie would be sweet in that it would probably be the last ‘big’ unexplored issue of what happened between ROTS and SW’77 that would be of interest to main audiences? Chris Nolan doing it would likely bring a new spin or approach to how it could be done or filmed.

Though like you, I’d prefer minimal-to-cameo Vader being involved or seen.

Bounty hunters for sure, crime lords, defectors and doule-agents, and some of the characters from Solo & Rogue One in differing and new environments as well. The seeds or birth of the Rebellion as it were. Frightened or oppresssed every-day folk too scared to help the few remaining Jedi in hiding - or those having no choice to get involved on behalf of the Empire…

The FE Renegades thread; from the people who post ‘go kill yourself’, ‘fuck you’, ‘let’s throw abuse’, and more at OT staff & members. Four years on and still throwing accusations, slurs and abuse at the OT & anyone outside their Salacious Crumb filled clique. + FE Discord “to vent” more at the OT. Wook’s take.

I guess maybe we do have a bit of a Vader oversaturation in the spinoff material nowadays, he’s easily the most fleshed-out character in the modern EU. Even then, I would still like to see a movie featuring Vader. Maybe Vader could be the main villain in a movie featuring a group of former Jedi, like someone here suggested? That could be pretty cool.

Why I reacted so strongly against Nolan directing it, though, is because I don’t like his movies at all. The plots are nonsensical, the characters are one-note and flat, and the sound mixing is awful. Maybe it’s just a case of hype backlash on my part, but I think he’s massively overrated. His new movie Tenet doesn’t seem like something I want to see anytime soon.

I honestly can’t think of director or genre I wouldn’t be highly anticipating if it were set in the Star Wars universe. I’d watch a dialogue driven Coen Brothers Star Wars movie, or a quirky Wes Anderson one. Maybe a Star Wars horror from del Toro? I still want that Law and Order: Coruscant series.

I don’t give a shit about Christopher Nolan, and I doubt he cares about Star Wars. All he does is guys in suits in cities with a muted cold color palette. It’s just not interesting. The grounded feel of the Dark Knight Trilogy was certainly interesting as a novelty, but at the end of the day, I’d rather the Burton films’ look.

Nolan would never direct Star Wars for the same reason he will never direct a James Bond film. EON and Lucasfilm would never cede control. Every decision he made would have to be approved by committee or based on some sort of decision based on the brand and marketing. Plus its George Lucas story and arena and he wouldn’t want to do someone else’s story. The Dark Knight trilogy was different because not only did Warner’s allow him to do his own thing, but it was a different adaptation of Batman. He wasn’t told to continue Schumacher, or Burton. Its also a project he was passionate about being a fan of the Batman comics, he went out on a limb and pitched it to the studio. I just don’t see him being that interested about Star wars. Also he was able to have free reign because Batman and Robin tarnished and ruined the brand. So anything that was not absolute trash was an improvement leading to the success of Batman Begins.

Nolan is a massive Star Wars fan and it was one of the things that moved him into a directing career. However, he has said that he’d be afraid to make a Star Wars film in case he upset fans.

Certainly a valid concern.

Certainly a valid concern.

It’s a lame concern. This is the biggest franchise on planet Earth. There’s no way to make a new StarWars anything without a potion of the fanbase hating it. Just make the movie you wanna make.
Anyway, I’d have zero interest in a Darth Vader movie no matter who was involved.

I feel like Star Wars movies whose focus is primarily on “understanding” and identifying with fascist dictators (homicidal/genocidal fascist dictators, at that) is a thing we should be more or less done with for awhile. I don’t need a movie about Darth Vader, or Kylo Ren, or any other bad guy who is REALLY just “misunderstood” and needs the right show of love to turn him to the light.

I’d like a movie by any set of storytellers about good people learning how to be better people at while triumphing over bad people who are doing bad things for their own benefit.

God, I’d love to see a story like that in Star Wars.

Hasn’t that been literally every Star Wars movie ever made? I think the sympathetic Vader/Kylo figures you describe are the exception, not the norm. Either way, I think it’s overly simplistic to say that no one in a fictional fascist state should be allowed to have any sympathetic motivations whatsoever. Regardless of your political leanings, I don’t think it’s very good to simplify one side into being a bunch of complete monsters who do evil things just for shits and giggles. That’s not how real life conflict works.
