What is the rarest video in your collection?
Time
My 2-disk limited edition of Bad Taste is supposed to be pretty rare. I also never see the Criterion edition of In the Mood For Love being sold in stores.

My limited edition Anchor Bay VHS tapes of Evil Dead and Army of Darkness are pretty cool, and they are individually numbered out of 30 000 i think. The AOD tape was the first ever release of the Directors Cut, which was pretty special at the time. My two-tape Terminator 2 special edition VHS set was awesome as well, a big box set containing the VHS of the extended version and a second tape with trailers and stuff. My Dawn of the Dead 2-tape Directors Cut was the prize of my VHS collection when i bought it. I also had Document of the Dead and Hearts of Darkness, two very rare documentaries.

And yeah, Salo is like the rarest video of all time. I never understood the fasination with it--its a very poor film to be honest.

what dialogue tracks?
Time
Well the press release implies whatever the audio was when they were released. Meaning "your lucky you dont taste very good" for ESB; i dont remember what the variations were for ROTJ but I'm fairly sure that "trust me" was the original mix. If they use the 1993 mixes then it wont be "as released in theaters" as the official site states.

Why the first two are better
Time
Really if they cut down Jabbas Palace and the especially the Ewoks ROTJ would be up there with ESB. I love ROTJ but i find Jabbas Palace drags on a bit and theres a lot of muppetry going on but i dont mind it so much because its the only time in the series where theres an environment like that and its pretty imaginative. But as soon as Wicket appears i instinctively turn off the film. If i can make it past the first few minutes by the time Han and Luke are being cooked I'm going insane, and then we have all kinds of stupidity that follows like C-3P0's storytime moments and all that leading-up-to-the-battle stuff. If that material had been different the film would have been fantastic! You got the best space battle ever filmed, Luke and Vaders epic confrontation, the Emperor, the forest battle--its all gold. I dont think anyone has ever cared that the focus of the film shifted more towards Luke and Vader or whatever, i think most people like that aspect of it the most.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

You fellows also bring up a really good point about the Emperor's transformation. I had always assumed (until Ep. 3) that using the Dark Side led to physical deterioration, and as the Emperor used it more and more, he deteriorated more and more. Obviously, this cannot happen now. The question is- how do we make it seem as though the Emperor revealed himself deliberately, and he wasn't injured by his own force lightning? My solution- the dream.

Sidious slowly fades on screen, his eyes glowing.

Voice of Anakin: Who are you?
Sidious: Someone you know. Someone you know very well.

I'll tackle that when I come to it, but I think that this can be developed through Anakin's dream in Ep. III.

I also hoped that the Emperor's deterioration resulted from his use of the Dark Side. In my re-cut of Episode 3 ("Episode 3" or "What Convinced Me To Try a Re-edit"), I've tried to present this idea a bit.

The edit might seem a bit clunky, but the horrendous explanation of "the Emperor fried himself with his own lightning" is hopefully softened enough to allow for the idea that he masked his transformation with the appearance of the lightning damage. Maybe this cut could help you if the dream doesn't work?

My re-edit of ROTS isn't complete yet (I've got to try to rip and demux some audio for editing), but all constructive critiques and creative solution suggestions are welcome.

The scene can be downloaded at YouSendIt.com. I just uploaded it today. I apologize if this is not the preferred upload/download method.

The download link is:

jedi_confront_palpatine.wmv

You know i hated your alternate opening but i love this. You really cleaned up the Mace duel to make it more plausible and removed all of Palpatine's silly moves and facial expressions. Good job!

BUT, i will say that a lot of the emotional oomph is lacking. Thats the only thing the sequence is missing. Its just kind of flat. Hard to say why exactly--maybe because Anakin's back-and-forth is missing. I think short of having access to the original elements though this is probably as good as this sequence can be re-edited though.

Basically, disks decompose over time, just like VHS tapes, although they dont get worn out due to use (they DO however get scratched, and thus are just as fragile, if not moreso). Also copying disks leads to generational loss just like VHS does, although not nearly on the same scale.

So while disks are better than tapes in many respects they are still fraught with the same problems. The only way to overcome these is to have the actual data files but then this opens up a whole new set of problems.

I thought the Yoda training issue was cleared up nicely by the scene in AOTC where we see Yoda training younglings, implying that Yoda basically teaches everyone before they get their own dedicated mentor. I wouldnt expect Obi Wan to say "You must go to Yoda, the jedi master who instructed me...well, actually to be specific my master was this guy named Qui Gon Jinn and he got killed by Darth Maul. Oh yeah, Darth Maul was the Sith apprentice before Darth Tyrannus and Darth Vader. But nevermind all that. Yoda is a guy who taught me before Qui Gon became my master, as i was saying. So anyway go to Yoda...Luke? Still alive?"

Yoda instructed Obi Wan. We dont see Obi Wan as Yoda's padawan but he does indeed instruct him, as he claims in ESB. Not a big deal. I think the OT has much bigger holes than this. "Certain point of view" ring a bell? At least we thankfully never had one that bad in the PT.

Yes, BEHIND the Magic is not on Myspleen, on MAKING Magic. Unfortunate too since Making Magic is waste of time and Behind the Magic was a fabulous disk. Someone should archive it ASAP.

You telling me that Making Magic is a waste of time trying to download...I've been trying for 3 days to get it

the only thing that is kinda neat is you see the original video meetings between Lucas and ILM for the SE effects. But really--its the SE effects so big deal. Making Magic is ONLY about the special edition, and its more of a marketing thing, theres really no new information, and most of it is just a list of changes to the SE, which are readily available on the net.

This is unsurprising--the original negatives were barely usable in 1993 when they were dug up for the Special Edition and restored, likely in a new Internegative and Interpositive. They caught them in the nick of time and had they waited a few more years the negatives would have been unusable. So it is no surprise that after thirteen more years of decomposition they are basically museum relics. But its no matter--the new 1993 Internegative made from the original 1977, 80 and 83 negatives is in pristine condition--this is what the basis was for the 97 SE. How did it look in theaters in 1997? Pretty good i think. So thats what the new transfers should look like.

I totally agree. I remember 'slick talking' McCallum said in the '97 Laserdisk SE Interviews that if they didn't restore the negatives back then, a couple of more years and they would have deteriorated to nothing. I think that is a hyperbole just to make a big deal that you should thank us cause we saved the Star Wars! I'm sure they were in bad shape, but the timing of the 20th anniversary and then saving the original negatives was too coincidental.

McCallum also said Boba Fett would be in Episode III, so I take him more with a grain of salt than I do with what Lucas says.

Boba Fett was indeed supposed to be in Episode III originally.

As for the convenient timing of the "rescue" perhaps it was a bit exagerated but i think the negatives truely were on the cusp of being nearly unusable (or, to put it more lightly, of the same or worse condition than the other dupe prints such as the 1985 interpositive). But by now they must be useless, i completely agree with reports which state the original negatives are basically useless by now. But like i said it doesnt really matter because the 1993 restorations are as good as the originals anyway. The camera negatives have seemed to have held up okay though, since we got all of those outtakes in the 2004 dvd.

TF.N has just updated the story. Apparently its a Darth Vader video game. You can view some concept artwork there. Looks cool, if only it werent a video game.

That's it? That's their big, overhyped 2007 extravaganza? Pfft. What a let down.

well i suppose when combined with the Celebration IV, 3D releases, the Saga box set and the TV show--if in fact all these things are coming out next year--2007 looks to be a huge, huge year for Star Wars considering the series is finished.

My first thought was "surprise= Archive Edition (or whatever you want to call it) 2007 SE box set". But it says it will be providing concept art and pre-production reports and such on it. So unless the new boxset will have changes on a much bigger scale than even the 97 SE, which we have no reason to believe (yet anyway--if this was the case i am sure we would have heard something though) then it must be the new television series, which should be coming out next year.

The battle will still continue. VHS was acceptable to people just over ten years ago--in over ten years from now DVD will no longer be around, likely, and cinephiles will either be full-fledged into HD or some kind of next-gen post-HD format. DVD is already "obsolete", despite its popularity--its nothing near "archive quality", although to someone who would have been content with VHS or Laserdisk it is adequete.

Also, regarding degredation--have you heard of disk rot?

Nothing has changed. We've been satisfied--for now. But in a few years time when more and more of us are using HD video as the preferred viewing format and Star Wars is not available on it the need will arise to pressure Lucasfilm to releasing it.

The battles quieted down but its not over at all.
