The Official 2006 Discs Will Be No Better Than What We Have!

DarthFirst also "confirmed" they are new transfers from the 1993 print. So we are a stalemate.

As far as official info, it would seem to imply they are as DarthFirst has claimed.

I dont believe this Digital Bits rumor--for now at least.

New DVDs NOT 16x9
Time
This is terrible terrible news IF ITS TRUE. Digitalbits seems to think it is. If thats the case i may just keep the laserdisk ports we have.

BUT

As someone pointed out this is completely nonsensical. Because Jim Wars said the prints were from 1993. The film was restored in 1993 and news prints were made--which is what i assumed we would be getting. If this is a non-anamorphic LD transfer then why the hell would you not use the superior 1995 video? In fact, Jim Ward seemed to imply that they would be from prints, not an old video telecine.

Also, Jim Ward said he was looking forward to this release for some time and is happy to finally get the go-ahead--why completely ruin his reputation?? As Digital Bits pointed out, this is completely unacceptable in todays world. I cant believe anyone at LFL would be so idiotic.

This simply doesnt make sense. Despite the fact that i utterly trust and love The Digital Bits i am not believing this until I see it.

Should there be an ULTIMATE EDITION!
Time
Maybe this "SE-release-in-installments" things is actually designed to slowly adapt us O-OT'ers.

I mean the 97 was shocking enough--can you imagine if we went from OOT to 2004 SE in one shot?? Hayden, Greedo, Naboo AND Jedi Rocks all in the same release? I think some of us here would have heart attacks!

Actually i have a confession to make--i watched the SE of ESB last night. I've always loved the original Fett voice and was appaled to hear Jango Fett in place of him in 2004. But last night...i didn't mind. In fact...I found it suitable. Whats going on??

b) glued to their tv without even thinking to record

The reason I didn't tape it that day. Kinda hard to think when something like that is going on.

zombie84--

Why would that be considered weird? Look at what I'm doing...and you say you have a tape that covers 3:30-6:30...what timezone are you going by? The recording I have covers from about 8:45 to almost 2 o'clock EST (5:45 - 11AM PST). If you're talking EST, that would be cool, as that extend the coverage of that day, without leaving too much of a hole between the two broadcasts (about 1 1/2 hours, 2-3:30 PM). And if you mean PST or one of the timezones in between, that's still cool, as there was still a lot of info coming out that evening.

Any way you could transfer that to some sort of digital video, or if not, copy it and send it to me? I could pay for shipping. Let me know.

Its EST, luckily for you. Only thing is it jumps channels a few times--so theres some ABC and NBC in there i think, but IIRC its mostly CNN. Its also not continuous--the time period covers roughly 3:30-6:30 i believe but its only about 60-90 minutes of footage.

I was thinking about digitizing it myself so I'll probably do this in a few weeks. I'll send you a copy of it then. Unless you would prefer a VHS copy for you to do it yourself, but i would advise against this (the original copy is EP mode anyway).

What are you going to do with your SE discs?

Lucas doesn't care how many we buy. Hell, he would prefer that we all buy 52 sets each. But by sending the disks back (unharmed and sans scratches) our point will be made. They can't use send back disks anyway. The restocking fees, the maticulous cleaning and repackaging. They'll probably just give them away to charity anyway because they can't use them.

It's win- freakin -win baby.

Of course you know what will happen then--they'll realise 'oh, we tried to save them money by packaging them together but i guess they want seperate releases, thats fine by us.' Then the next release, ie Blu-Ray, we have a huge six-film box set with all the goodies, plus another seperate boxset we have to buy for the original editions, and I'm sure idiots will still be buying "fullscreen" releases by then so there may be as many as four different box sets released at one time. Ugh. Definitly not looking forward to that.

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time
I'm much more disturbed by the fact that the canadian version retails for $43. The conversion rate is practically equal--theres no way why it should be over forty bucks. This places the minimum retail price--which is closer to what stores will actually sell it for--at about $35, which is better but still far overpriced. I may be ordering mine from an american retailer.

Hmmm. If that advertisement is real, it does indeed suck that we get worthless promotional items on the disk such as a game demo. But really, i dont think we should worry--having a two or three hundred megabyte game demo is not going to eat up much disk space; its about the same as having a commentary track, and given that the films will have stereo 2.0 sound and no other extras this is perfectly reasonable.

My Suggestion- Commentary CDs!
Time
Well considering Burtt, Lucas, Hamill et all only really are recorded speaking about the films on official LFL documentaries and such you wont find too much dirt. What little there is is mostly in print anyway, and really, there isn't a whole lot of dirt on the series.

If you are interested in an actual, true behind-the-scenes account of the making of the saga and its storyline, ie with regards to backstory, prequels and sequels, I am working on material for a book on the subject which should be completed in the next month or so.

Lucas and The Winter's Tale
Time
Wow, very interesting. I'm very interested in learning more about this Winter's Tale now, which i had not even heard of.

George's revised "vision" for the I-VI Star Wars story arc is very, very similar to the story of The Winter's Tale. A man (in this case a king) becomes jealous that his wife's expectant baby is actually the result of an affair with a close friend of his. He goes crazy and tries to kill her. The baby is spirited away from the father and adopted by an old shepherd. Sixteen years pass, and the story suddenly shifts to the grown-up child (who is a girl in this case) who, after a series of events, is reunited with her father, who has become repentant.

Could it be that this was one of the influences of the original PT story from 1983? Was Anakin to turn to the darkside and kill padme because he though she was having an affair with Obi Wan? Certainly that seems to be where Lucas was taking things, though this jealousy aspect was almost completely written out of the final film. To translate it to Star Wars: A man (in this case The Chosen One) becomes jealous that his wife's expectant baby is actually the result of an affair with a close friend of his, Obi Wan Kenobi. He turns to the darkside and kills her. The baby, Luke, is spirited away from the father and adopted by an old moisture farmer. Twenty years pass, and the story suddenly shifts to the grown-up Luke who, after a series of events, is reunited with his father, who has become rependent and is redeemed.

Hmmm...
