True but a lot of the "clean up" is really just transfer errors introduced when it was put on Laserdisk and not necessarily from the original material. It appears Lucasfilm is also doing some digital cleanup to try and squeeze as much quality out of these as can be done (which is to say, not much; also not frame-by-fram stuff but merely filters and the like--or so its been reported).

But anyway go XO go. Will be interesting to see how close it compares with the official dvd.

T'bone's interesting take on the OOT DVD's
Time
I think its totally bogus. He doesnt want his wife to profit? I dont think so. Aside from the fact that i doubt Lucas is that immature, the SE's were clearly motivated by his genuine desire to correct and improve his original compromises--he was talking about this stuff in 1977 for gods sake. Also the release of this OOT, despite being advertised as an extra, would still provide royalties.

Wanna know the real reason why Lucas is doing all this?

Because he genuinely loves the SE and hates the OT.

Occams razor guys. Why is this re-issue so shitty? Because Lucasfilm wants to make lots of money. Thats all it is. Its not some secret revenge tactic against his wife.

Yes, since he is using the LD masters. Thus, the X0 Project, using roughly the same source, has an excellent opportunity to surpass (if not leapfrog) the LFL DVDs.

Not to dampen the enthusiasm but i think the official disks will be somewhat better, simply because they are using the masters. Even though its a non-anamorphic transfer, a dvd release from the Laserdisk master will still be higher in resolution than a Laserdisk from the Laserdisk master. I dont doubt that the XO project will give it a run for its money though.

StarWarsLegacy.com - The Official Thread

That would be very cool to have the original crawl in the Legacy collection.

If you want to see the speed of the titles and how fast the original star wars logo went by watch Empire of Dreams, they have a clip of the original crawl (in ANAMORPHIC--wtf?).

The actual text was a different format though. The words are the same but the spacing (and possibly even the speed of the crawl) is different. Someone else can probably provide you with the original formatting.

(btw--the words in your screenshot look kind of crooked and skewered; is this just me?)

Who has now lost all respect.........

Yeah, this really broke my heart.

I'm not a Lucas basher but i may be becoming a Lucasfilm basher. This release was going so well, everything would have been so easy to set right--and it almost feels like they went out of their way to screw us. I just dont get it. This shocked me more than the actual release that they would be released because i figured Lucasfilm would put out something respectable. I guess I was wrong.

Don't remember which thread it was in, but I'll say it again: Giving such a specific date was simply too suspicious to take at face value. This was the biggest reason for me to believe the release would be a non-anamorphic LD transfer. Sucks to be proven right.

I know--and in 1993 the OOT WAS RESTORED WITH A NEW 35MM INTERPOSITIVE PRINT FOR THE SE!!!

WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY?????!

I really dont get it. Its like they are going out of their way to screw us. Jim Ward should be ashamed.

Make your voices heard! (again) - re the 2006 GOUT DVD being in letterbox format

Well, Digital Bits has run a new story on the matter. Its true.

Its true.

Will say it again: its true.

I have never, ever said what i am about to say; I've always been a defender--if a level-headed one--of George Lucas, but this has simply gone too far. So here it is:

Fuck you, George Lucas.

Wow, that felt weird.

Fuck you, George Lucas.

I've had enough of this. Seriously--what the hell is wrong with Lucasfilm??? Are they truely that callous that they wont put any effort at all to give us something half decent. Jim Ward should rot in dvd hell. How dare he try to sell us something as terrible as this.

Sigh. Just when things looked so good. The war could have been over--it would have been so easy...

I think we need to be clear that not only will we NOT buy non-anamorphic transfers, but that a new transfer from the original restored pre-SE 1993 35mm print is needed (which i suppose would be necessary for a non-anamorphic transfer---but lets be clear) and that it is a total embarassment to the home video world to do anything less. I dont want an anamorphic Laserdisk transfer ending up on disk in september and Jim Ward saying "hey we gave you anamorphic like you wanted!"

Anamorphic or not, I don't feel it is as big as a deal for me as making sure that Luke's line of "You're lucky you don't taste very good" is still intact.

That one always bugged me a lot. Did they think it was politically incorrect or something that they changed it to such a bland, generic line? Seriously, there must be a reason...

My theory is that the don't taste very good line was looped in after the fact. The line in the SE was the line said on the set and in the process of cleaning up the negative, a print without the looped line was used and they were too busy making that god-awful wampa scene to notice they goofed.

No the "dont taste good" line was improvised on-set. The "lucky to get out of there" was the scripted line, and to me it sounds like ADR.

what percentage of Joe Public would buy it in the first place? Joe Public has already bought the fullscreen 2004 SE.

This is for us. For the people who care about widescreen and anamorphic transfers.
