Harmy is in the news today.

Kind of hate to see this as it may raise flags with the powers that be who may then try to shut Harmy down :(

Especially when these articles pop up in financial sections...

Castilian anime dubs aren't bad (especially newer ones).  And I've heard some pretty good Japanese film dubs.  (Hearing Krillin's voice come out of John Connor... priceless.)

I know it is off-topic, but I'd like to make this quick aside.  It is Kuririn, not Krillin, this particular Americanization irks me every time I see it.

Sweet Lord. I had attributed the problem with the Castillian track to either a honest mistake by whoever put together the GOUT edition or just lazy editing, but after reading what you all mention, I'm beginning to think that they are doing it on purpose.

Not to mention the Russian dub mixes PAL and film-speed sources without pitch-correcting them to match. I get the feeling that dubbing is an afterthought in a lot of places, and not just with Star Wars. The only place I've noticed that dubs get a real professional level of attention is in France.  In fact, I personally had a pretty low opinion of dubbing in general until I heard some French audio for some films.

Typical, the French just HAVE to be different...

I finally got a chance to watch the rough cut of part 1 of the Introducing the Despecialized Edition documentary.  Harmy, your voiceover work on this really surprised me, it was very clean, clear and natural sounding (in that the English didn't seem forced).  You were all right on the sources narration, but this is just leaps better.

I have to agree that, imagining the perspective of someone not overly familiar with this project, the beginning seems too focused on John Williams.  It really comes off as the music changes are what set you off the most.  Tobar's suggestions both sound like they'd give the impact you're trying to get across.  Also, you probably wouldn't necessarily have to change the following narration about the things that got changed in addition to John Williams' award winning music, as with all those other awards represented in the beginning, the Williams mention here isn't the overload it was before, the line transforms into more of a listing of changes than gushing exuberance for John Williams.

I see now what you're wanting for the sound section, and since this is about what made you want to do the despecialization, you're not necessarily having to just compare original to Blu-ray.  With that said, there was something I believe was fixed for the Blu-ray, but totally present on the DVD audio, that being the fanfare as the x-wings are attacking the Death Star getting drowned out entirely by effects (even gives you a good chance to show off the new CG space battle).

Yes, here it is: (from http://www.dvdactive.com/editorial/articles/star-wars-the-changes-part-one.html )

The Force Fanfare
Here we come to one of the more contentious issues surrounding the DVD release of A New Hope. During the Rebel attack on the Death Star, just as the X-Wings swoop down to attack the trench, a triumphant statement of the Force theme can be heard. You can listen to this by clicking here. The DVD release of the film buries this music so far down in the mix that it is virtually inaudible, as demonstrated by this clip. This exemplifies the problems with the audio on this DVD release of A New Hope. However, Lucasfilm issued the following statement to reassure everyone that there was nothing wrong:

"We are always impressed with how closely fans listen to the many different sound mixes we have made for the Star Wars movies over the years. It is flattering to know that, indeed, the audience is listening. Consequently, each mix comes out differently and any changes that you hear on the all-new Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX tracks on the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set are deliberate creative decisions. We can confirm that there are no technical glitches as has been reported."

Well, thank goodness for that then. There’s obviously nothing wrong with the release, and the reported inconsistent dialogue levels, reversed stereo score and missing music are all ‘deliberate creative decisions’. Phew! However, it was nice of Lucasfilm to make the creative decision to give French speaking people the chance to view the DVD with the Force theme intact, as evidenced by this clip. So, it’s a deliberate creative decision? Yeah right—mind tricks only work on the weak-minded!

To further reinforce how the above was bull the Blu-ray release of the film has restored the Force Fanfare to its former glory. Not all of the audio errors have been fixed mind you, but that's a story for another time...

Seeing how we're on the topic of tehparadox and jdownloader, I have a question for the next time I use it.  Is there a way around having to answer a CAPTCHA for every single part?  Not only does it get old fast when there's 41 of those things to answer, but jdownloader only seems to want to grab up to 20 parts at a time, so I have to come back whenever midway through the download is so I can answer 20 more, then come back again to answer that last one.  It is fine if that's just the way it is, but if there's a way around it, the smart people here are sure to know.

To save some heartache, perhaps anyone reporting audio problems on a certain track should compare against the other mixes first (and mention this).  If it exists across the board, then it probably is supposed to be that way, and not worth h_h having to track down, but if it does seem unique to a track, exact timestamps would be helpful, as Nick66 said.

And while there's also talk about colors, brightness, contrast, etc., it does come to mind that during the duel, most notably around when Luke is herded into the carbon freezing chamber, Vader's features were a bit more difficult to make out than I expected.  Overall I liked the feel of the whole scene, but have to wonder if the blacks ended up a bit more crushed than they needed to be.  I've only watched that scene on one display, so I may have judged hastily, but that was my impression.

I can see your point, the freezing thing is really only a desperate measure for if there's something you really want to retrieve.  If this is purely a backup drive and you're not missing anything, I'd say eat the cost of a new hard drive for your immediate needs while you process the warranty (for what will end up an extra drive).  Granted, you might want to try deleting whatever data the drive will let you before sending it back, as you don't know what they'll do with your original platters (yes a zero wipe would be preferable, but any amount of deleting is better than nothing).

Do you think it could really predict that the HDD would die two years later, where one day it was working perfectly fine and the next day, it was dead?

And well, it actually isn't completely dead, you can still browse through it and see all the files and they even start copying when you try but it's going super slowly and in a couple of minutes you get a "can't read file" error message. And it makes these terrible noises. I think the spinning mechanism is broken.

Predict a mechanical part breaking?  No.  But there's plenty that can be discovered with it that might not come up for a year or so, since often there can be bad sectors far enough into the disk that it takes a while to actually get to in general use, but once you do get there, all hell breaks loose.

Oh, and at the stage it is in now, if there actually is anything you need to get off of it, you can wrap the drive in something (to keep moisture off) and toss it in a fridge for a few hours.  That tends to get the drive working for a short period, in which you can get some files off of it, or at least generate a list of what was on it, so you know what's missing.

Damn! I think this super moon thing is bad for HDDs! Adywan reported a crapped out HDD like a week ago and today, my 2TB external HDD died in agony (seriously, you should have heard the noises it was making!!!) :-/ It was a backup HDD, so no important data was lost but now I don't have anything backed up :-(

I encourage you to run a badblocks endurance test on the next drive, please contact me when you get it and I'll walk you through the process.  It is pretty simple and well worth it.

I've had some experience with xdelta patches like this, and it would never work for converting a Blu-ray rip to the sort of files you're making, not least of all being that every last bit is different between them.  Even if you wanted to make sure the recipient legitimately owned the Blu-ray, whatever is being compared would have to be EXACTLY the same, meaning everyone would be forced to run the same OS as you, have the necessary hardware, and run exactly the same programs exactly the same way, and you already know how well people take instruction.  It is a nice thought, but difference files like this are only really good for making small updates between two things that are ultimately similar.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Don't forget that any cuts and readditions to the negative means that the adjoining frames are destroyed in the process.  So, even if entire scenes are in storage somewhere unaltered, we still can't escape the fact that the film as a whole has irrevocably lost a great number of frames that were present on the original cut.  If anyone does a restoration of the OOT and thinks to fix that, they would have to find those frames from sources other than the o-neg (so, interpositives or the like), I'm sure they can make it look acceptable, if they realize what's missing.

Checked out a bit of the mkv this morning and saw one of those things you can't unsee, right before the Wampa pops up and knocks out Luke, you can see a boom mic reflection in the eye wear on top of his head.

LOL. I'm assuming you know this, but that was always there.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080684/goofs#boom_mic_visible

I don't doubt it was an original goof, but I'd certainly never noticed it before (I both love finding boom mics, and dislike how much it takes me out of the illusion).

Well despite your best effort, my hopes are up. :P

Do you think, then, that it surpass the others films in completion status? Or perhaps it already has, for Empire.

Easily, yes. There is a small push to get this out after Star Wars, or even before it, if possible.

There will be a screening of this movie, just like the other two. So we will know later this year, how feasible it will be.

Comments are the only way for us to know about interest, otherwise, what is the point of posting pictures and videos, without feedback.

Lots of people want to see what is being worked on, and the quality of it, since we don't have a real official version out.

There are many comments about all kinds of minute details for other projects, this restoration needs other people to look it at, besides ourselves. Or we will be the only ones that end up enjoying it.

So feel free to post relevant questions, and comments about images, quality and other topics.

Team Negative1

Oh, I'm interested, and lots of people are interested in what this completed project can mean for us all, never doubt that.  In the mean time, what are the chances you can get any of the key special edition changed scenes to Harmy for his project?
